Introduction

  • Volume is the amount of space occupied by an object. It’s measured in cubic units.
  • Generally volume of objects is base area x height


Volume of a Prism

  • A prism is a solid with uniform cross section.
  • The volume V of a prism with cross section area A and length l is given by V = AL

Example

Solution

Volume of the prism = base area x length (base is triangle)
=
1/2 × 6 × 3 × 10
= 90cm2

Example

Find the volume of a regular hexagonal prism with edge length 8 ft and height 12ft

Solution

V = B.A × h
=(1/2 San)h
where S= length of one side of the hexagon,
a=height of one triangle in the hexagonal cross-section,
n=number of triangles on the hexagonal cross-section
h= height of the hexagon
= 1/2[8)(4√3)(6)]12
= 1995.3 ft3

Explanation

  • A cross- sectional area of the hexagonal is made up of 6 equilateral triangles whose sides are 8 ft
  • To find the height we take one triangle as shown above

Using sine rule we get the height

Solution

Area of cross section = 6 × 1/2 × 8 × 8 sin60
= 166.28
Volume = 166.28 x 12
= 1995.3
ft2



Volume of a Pyramid

  • Volume of a pyramid = 1/3 Ah
    Where A = area of the base and h = vertical height

Example

Find the volume of a pyramid with the vertical height of 8 cm and width 4 cm length 12 cm.

Solution.

Volume = 1/3 x 12 x 4 x 8
= 128cm3



Volume of a Sphere

V = 4/3πr3



Volume of a Cone

Volume = 1/3 area of base × height
= 1/3πr2h

Example

Calculate the volume of a cone whose height is 12 cm and length of the slant heigth is 13 cm

Solution

Volume = 1/3 ( base area × height
= 1/3πr2h

But, base radius r = √(132122)= √25 = 5
Therefore volume = 1/3 x 22/x 25 x 12 cm
= 314.3cm

Volume of a Frustrum

Volume = volume of large cone – volume of smaller cone

Example

A frustum of base radius 2 cm and height 3.6 cm. if the height of the cone from which it was cut was 6 cm, calculate

  1. The radius of the top surface
  2. The volume of the frustum

Solution

Triangles PST and PQR are similar
Therefore PQ = QR = PR
               PS     ST    PT

Hence  2 
         2.4    ST
ST = 0.8 cm
The radius of the top surface is 0.8 cm
Volume of the frustum = volume of large cone – volume of smaller cone
=
1/3 x 3.142 x 4 x 6 − 1/3 x 3.142 x 0.82 x 2.4
= 25.1 4 – 1 .61 = 23.53 cm2
