MARKING SCHEME

    1. 7 reasons why C.R.E as a subject is incorporated into curriculum in Kenyan schools Today.
      To make us ware of our religion and culture
      To improve our understanding of the Bible/know the character of some personality in the
      Bible to emulate them (e.g Abraham/Moses/David)
      For career development leading to employment.
      To appreciate God’s creation
      To acquire skills and knowledge so as to make social/moral/spiritual decision
      To develop our faith in Jesus / to lead a holy life
      To assist the student to achieve the National goals of Education (i.e. equality/unity)
      To help one to analyze the mystery of life (e.g. why people die /what happens after death)  (7x1=7)
    2. GIVE the ways though which the study of C.R.E builds our relationship with GOD.
      CRE enables us to understand who God is.
      We get to know what GOD expects of us and strive to do His will
      We acquire Christians values and morals that guide us in our relationship with GOD and our neighbors
      We are able to identify and emulate some biblical characters who pleased GOD
      We are able to receive the holy spirit who gives us new life
      We are able to seek GOD’S forgiveness and forsake our sinful past as we become new creatures in Christ.
      We learn to become good role models for other people in the society to emulate.
      We anticipate being with GOD forever when our lives are over on earth. (6x1=6)
    3. The translation of the Bible from the original languages to local languages in Kenya. 
      It was originally written in Hebrew language
      Greek scholars translated the New Testament into Greek language. It was called the
      Septuagint iii. In the 4th century it was translated into the Latin language in a version called the Vulgate
      Martin Luther translated the Bible into German language
      John Wycliffe translated the Bible into English language
      The missionaries i.e. Dr. Ludwing Krapf translated part of the Bible into Kiswahili and Taita languages
      Later it was translated by the Kenya Bible society into several local languages such as Luhya, Kikuyu, Luo, kamba  (7x1=7)

    1. Describe how the Sinai covenant was sealed.  
      The Sinai covenant was sealed (Exodus 24:4-8) through:- Moses built an altar of 12pillars to represent the 12 tribes of Israel
      He then sent young men to offer/sacrifice oxen to the Lords as burnt offering
      He took half of the blood and poured in a basin
      Half of the blood was sprinkled in the altar
      He then took the book of the covenant and read it to the Israelites
      The people promised to obey God
      He took the remaining blood and sprinkled it upon the people
      The blood was the covenant that the Lord made with the people
      God promised to bless them, if they obey Him
      A new relationship was established between God and the Israelites (7x1=7)
    2. State six conditions given by God to the Israelites during the renewal of the Sinai  covenant.
      To obey what God commanded them.
      Not to make nay treaty with people of the land where they were going.
      To destroy their altars/smash their sacred stones/cut down their Asherah.
      Not to worship any idol/other god.
      To keep the feast of unleavened bread
      To rest on the seventh day.
      Not to intermarry with foreigners
      Not to make idols
      To offer to God the first fruits of their crops
      Dedicate all their first born male children and first born male of their domestic animals to God. (6x1=6)
    3. Why do Christians find it difficult to follow the laws of God?          
      Lack of faith.
      Worldly pleasures.
      Poverty
      Lack of exemplary Christian leaders.
      Influence from non-Christians.
      Indulgence in traditional beliefs and practices.
      Influence of western culture.
      Negative influence of the media.
      Lack of committed Christian community      
      Political persecution.
      Due to lack of quick response by God to their prayers.
      Influence of secularization.
      David brought the Ark of the covenant to Jerusalem. (7x1=7)

    1. How did King David promote the worship of Yahweh in Israel?
      He did not only make Jerusalem his political capital but also the holy city/religious/spiritual capital in which all Israelites came for religious occasions.
      He composed the psalms used in worship.
      He showed respect to the prophets of Yahweh E.g Nathan.
      When David made mistakes he repented and asked for Yahweh’s forgiveness.
      David humbled himself before Yahweh and completely submitted to his will.
      He advised others to obey God.
      He constantly prayed to God and sought his guidance.
      He conquered the enemies of Israel so that they could live in peace (7x1=7)
    2. Factors that lead to David’s successor’s failure in their leadership.
      Lacks faith in God.
      Dishonest and never committed God before undertaking their activitiesMarried foreign wives who brought foreign influence
      Disobeyed God’s command by marrying foreign wives
      Practiced idolatry
      Oppressed the poor thus destroying the law of brotherhood
      Subjected the Israelites to forced labor and slavery
      Did not go according to the Law of Moses.
      Took part in Pagan feasts festivals
      Encouraged syncretism
      Built temples for worshipping idols

    3. Identify reasons why political leaders in Kenya have failed to perform their duties effectively.
      Struggle for power/leadership wrangles.
      Materialism/wealth accumulation
      Greed/selfishness
      Tribalism/ethnicity
      Laxity on the government to punish law breakers/ineffective judicial system
      Failure by politicians to act independently/control by higher authority
      Lack of leadership skills by some politicians
      Illiteracy (6x1=6)

    1. Give 8 reasons why God called prophets in Old Testament.        
      Called to speak/act for God
      Carry out special tasks/duties
      To remind the Israelites about the covenant way
      To reveal God’s nature/will to the people
      To teach people the will of God
      Pronounce judgment and punishment for the people and nations
      To fight against idolatry/condemn evil
      Call people to repentance and forgiveness
      Restore true worship of Yahweh/monotheism
      To warn the people of coming danger
      Prepare people for coming of the Messiah  (8 x 1 = 8 marks)
    2. Visions of Amos.
      Amos saw a swarm of locusts
      He saw a great fire sent by God
      He saw a crooked wall being measured using a plumb line
      He saw a basket full of ripe summer fruits
      He saw the Lord standing beside the alter/destruction of the alter.  (5 x 1 = 5 marks)
    3. How church brings back members who have fallen in the faith.
      Visiting them/inviting them to their homes
      Inviting them to church functions
      Sharing with them word of God/fellowship
      Preaching to them the word of God
      Sending emissaries to find out the problems
      Offering guidance and counseling to them
      Praying for them/with them
      Inviting them back to church
      Pardoning them/forgiving them
      Encouraging them to repent/confess/apologize

    1. Evils condemned by prophet Jeremiah during the temple sermon.
      He condemned the false belief about the temple not being destroyed because it was God’s dwelling place.
      He condemned the hypocrisy/presence of people who committed different sins and came to the temple to worship Yahweh.
      He talked about the defiled of the temple by placing idols in it.
      He condemned the worship of other gods/idolatry which was a rebellion to the Sinai         covenant.
      He condemned the practice of human sacrifice which was against the commandments of   God.
      He condemned oppression of the foreigners/widows/orphans which against the covenant way of   life.
      He condemned the stubbornness/rebellion of the Israelites against God’s warning    (6x1=6)
    2. The stages followed during the renewal of the covenant at the time of Nehemiah
      The people gathered in the public square in Jerusalem.
      The priest Ezra read the law to the people.
      They performed repentance gesture of raising / lowering their hands
      The people constructed makeshift tents /shelters to celebrate the feast of the booths
      There was a national day of confession / fasting as they wore sack clothes
      Ezra led people in prayer of confession
      They scaled the covenant by signing an agreement under the leadership of
      Nehemiah and the priest.
      The people promised not to go against the mosaic law.
      The re- distribution of the people in Jerusalem and country side(8x1=8)
    3. Ways in which Christians can assist victims of disasters.
      By donating food clothing for them.
      By providing shelter for them.
      By resettling them in safe areas.
      Offering guidance and counselling.
      Through healthcare.
      By re-uniting them with their families.
      By providing financial assistance
      By taking preventive measures against future disaster.
      Through visiting them.
      Praying for/ with them
      Preaching to them   (6x1=6)

    1. Identify five ways of choosing a marriage partner in traditional African society.
      Parents made choices when children are young
      Parents of the young man approached the parents of the young lady and asked for her hand in marriage
      A girl could be way laid by a young man and dragged to his house
      A senior wife could choose another wife for her husband
      A brother of the dead man could inherit his wife/widow inheritance/herirate
      Rich men/kings/ rulers could be given wives in some communities as gifts                (5x1=5mks )
    2. What changes have taken place in property ownership in traditional society.
      Women/children now own property
      Wealth is no longer determined by the number of wives and children
      Introduction of money economy has reduced the value attached to land
      The roles of elders in sharing property has been eroded
      Land is individually owned through issuance of title deeds
      Property can be owned outside ones ancestral home
      People write wills to share/decide who should inherit property
      Land can now be sold/auctioned (commercialized)  
      Emergence of new forms of property e.g. stocks and shares, bonds, treasury bills               (8x1=8mks )
    3. Can lead to abandonment of ones children wife
      Can cause jealously/breakage of family
      May lead to destruction of property/snatching/grabbing/poverty
       It is dehumanizing/oppressive to the woman/widow
      Can lead to disease e.g HIV/AIDS
      Cause embarrassment to the concerned members/not promoting respect
      It is against the Christian teaching of monogamy
      Can lead to street children/increase in crime
      Can lead to mistreatment of the partial orphans//widow
