      • Wash in warm ( 1/2) soapy ( 1/2)water using kneading and squeezing ( 1/2) method
      • Rinse ( 1/2) in warm water ( 1/2)
      • Final rinse ( 1/2) in cold water ( 1/2) added fabric conditioner ( 1/2)
      • Drip dry ( 1/2) on a line ( 1/2) under a shade ( 1/2) secured by pegs ( 1/2)
      • Iron when dry ( 1/2) with warm ( 1/2) iron
      • Air ( 1/2) fold and store ( 1/2)
        ( 1/2) x 16 = 8marks
    2. Thorough cleaning a polished wooden floor for the sitting room. (8 marks)
      • Collect the necessary cleaning equipment ( 1/2)
      • Move light furniture to one side ( 1/2) and sweep the floor ( 1/2) dust the skirting board ( 1/2)
      • Wipe ( 1/2) the floor and skirting board ( 1/2) using warm ( 1/2) soapy ( 1/2) water and a mop/ floor cloth ( 1/2) overlapping the sections ( 1/2)
      • Rinse ( 1/2) with clean water using a mop/ floor cloth ( 1/2)
      • Dry ( 1/2) the floor with clean dry mop/ cloth ( 1/2) allow floor to dry completely ( 1/2)
      • Apply polish sparingly ( 1/2) using a dry cloth/ floor polish mop ( 1/2) in circular motions ( 1/2)
      • Allow the polish for some time set ( 1/2)
      • Buff the floor ( 1/2) with a dry mop/ dry non fluffy cloth ( 1/2) till it shines
      • Sweep if necessary to remove any fluffs ( 1/2)

      Store appropriately 8x ½ = 4marks

Answer any two questions from this section in the spaces provided at the end of this section.

    1. Why hospital confinement is advisable.
      • There is plenty of qualified staff to assist incase of an emergency.
      • Hospitals have facilities for emergency delivery.
      • Best environment that is hygienic.
      • Visitors are controlled thus mother and baby not likely to be contaminated with diseases.
      • Mother and baby have enough time to rest.
      • The mother feels safer psychologically.
      • Baby receives immunization immediately.
      • The mother is trained on child care and proper hygiene.
      • Hospital delivery minimizes before and after delivery complications such as physical and mental damage to mother and the baby.
    2. Qualities of a well-made collar.
      • Should retain its shap
      • Applied accurately to lie smoothly on the neckline.
      • It should be accurately and systematically positioned with the neck curve smooth.
      • The under collar shouldn’t show on R.S. and neither the facings.
      • Stitches used to hold the under collar or facing shouldn’t be visible on Right side of the garment.
    3. Consideration to make when furnishing a house.
      • The size of the room
      • The colour scheme of the surfaces.
      • The use of the room
      • The personal preferences.
      • Occupants of the room.
      • The effect desired.
      • The existing decor.
      • How to ensure the purchase of quality goods by customers.
      • Buy from reliable and approved dealers who offer quality items.
      • Test and check for goods condition and performance of an item before buying.
      • Check on the expiry date.
      • Check for any defect.
      • Insist on instructional manual.
      • Insist on receipt to show payment.
      • Insist on a guarantee of a given time.
    1. State five disadvantages of renting a house. (5marks)
      • The house may not meet ones requirement
      • The landlord may not repairer the house on time in case required.
      • One may lose / damage his/her properties when moving from one house to another .
      • The rent maybe increased for any reason as the landlord wishes.
      • The tenancy may be terminated without prior notice.
      • There maybe restrictions from the landlord.
      • There is lack of ownership security on the tenant side.
    2. Give the procedure of working a plain seam (7marks)
      • Place together two pieces of fabric with right sides facing, matching the fitting lines and the raw edges.
      • Pin through at intervals to prevent shifting of layers.
      • Tack on the fitting line.
      • Remove pins
      • Machine on the fitting line.
      • Remove tacking and finish off threads.
      • Trim the seam allowance to one cm and neaten the two raw edges together.
    3. Factors to consider when setting a table (3marks)
      • Number of people eating the meal .
      • Number of courses in a meal
      • The cutlery and crockery required(3x1=3marks
    4. Fabrics which cannot be disinfected by boiling (5marks)
      • Viscose
      • Acrylics
      • Wool

      • Polyamides
      • Silk
    1. Why the consumer should be protected.
      • To ensure that marketed goods are safe for consumption.
      • So that the consumer is not cheated by traders.
      • To reduce monopoly which can be exploitive to the consumer.
      • So that the quality of goods and services is ensured for the consumer to get value for money.
      • To ensure goods are not hoarded by the traders thus denying the consumer the right to access items.
      • To ensure traders do not operate at unreasonable profit levels making it impossible for consumer to access essential goods e.g. food materials.
    2. Rules for Darning (5marks)
      • Use darning needle suitable for the fabric being darned
      • Use a suitable yarn of the same color and fiber content as the article being repaired
      • Darn on the wrong side of the article
      • Avoid stretching or pulling the garment while working
      • Leave a loop hanging at each end   of darning line to allow room for shrinkage
      • Make the shape of the darn irregular in order to distribute the strain of the newly inserted thread evenly into the surrounding threads .(5x1=5marks)
    3. Pieces of information expected on a product certified by the Kenya Bureau of Standards.(5marks)
      • Brand name of the product.
      • Quantity/ by count, measure or weight.
      • Name and address of manufacture.
      • Nutrients by percentage especially food materials.
      • Care and caution where applicable.
