SECTION B [60MKS]

answer question 11 and any other three question from this section . Your are advised to spend not more than 25 min on question 11.

  1. Fig 2 shows an isometric view of a shaped block .draw FULL size the three views of the object in 1stangle projection [15mks]
    WOOD 1 MS 11
    1. Using sketches describe two methods of cutting veneers from logs [6mks]
      -Rotary cutting
      WOOD 1 MS 12 ROTARY
      - log in mounted between centres of a large lathe.
-it is reduced to a true cylinder and then rotated against a razor sharp knife ,producing a comtinuous veneer.
      - slice cutting
      WOOD 1 12 SLICE
-log in sawn to a machine bed
      - the machine moves the bulk diagonally across a knife which shaves off a veneer
      - the process is continued
    2. With the aid of labeled sketches outline the procedure of sharpening   auger bitspurs and state the necessary precautions [61/2 mks]
-Auger bit file or a triangle file is used .Triangular should not have teeeth at the corners.
-Auger bit is held firmly against the edge of the bench with the screw pointing up.
      - the inside of the spurs is then filled until it forms a knife- like edge.
      - The filling is done across the complete inside face of the spur rather than just on the leading edge.
      - The bit is repositioned and the opposite spur filled in the same manner.
    3. list down the reasons for reconditioning a plane [2 1/2MKS]

      - to make it stable
    2. Give three main reasons why woodworker would prefer using heartwood rather than sapwood when making woodwork projects [3mks]
      - it's decorative
      - not easily attacked by insects
      -it is stable
    3. Outline the procedure of finishing using French polish [7mks]
-Rubber is changed and and glinded on the surface with light presssure to start with.
      - Rubber is used along the grain while the pressure is increased gradually.
      - Rubber is recharged and then used with circular movements.
-Final strokes are taken along the grain.
-Surface is left to dry for 24hrs

      - dowelled edge joint
    2. Using sketches of exploded views show five different ways of making widening joints [41/2mks]
      WOOD 1 15B
    3. Briefly explain the steps followed in the making of a haunched mortise and tenon joint [6mks]
-prepare the mortice & tenon piece.
-divide the tenon and mortice pieces into three equal parts on the thickness side .
      - mark the waste material.
      - mark the hawned on the tenon piece.
-cut the shoulder and remove the waste material from the tenon piece.
