Instructions to schools

The following materials will be provided by the school:

1. Plain lightweight cotton fabric 55cm long by 90cm
2. Sewing cotton thread to match the fabric
3. One embroidery thread to be used by all students.

NB:FABRICS IN EXCESS OF THE AMOUNT MUST NOT BE SUPPLIED TO THE CANDIDATES

1. The schools will receive with papers for the practical examination:
   1. copies of the question paper in a sealed envelope;
   2. an envelope for each candidate containing the pattern;
   3. an envelope for inserting the constructed garment;
      
      A printed pattern is being used. Before the examination, the teacher should explain to the candidate that it is not necessary to cut out the patter pieces accurately before placing them on the fabric: it is necessary only to separate the pattern pieces.
2. Each candidate will require:
   1. the basic sewing tools and equipment including cutting-out scissors, a safety pin approximately 2.25 cm long, dress maker's pins, a variety of needles, tape measure, pattern transferring items and a seam ripper:
   2. a pencil and a small label bearing his/her name and index number, which is to be attached to his/her work at the end of the examination.
3. There should be sufficient table space allowed for each candidate to work freely. At least four sewing machines and two sets of pressing equipment should be provided for every ten candidates.
4. Schools offering a large number of candidates should arrange them in sessions according to availability of equipment. It should be noted that all sessions should fit one day only
5. The supervisor must not be the Home Science teacher but the Home Science teacher must be available in case the supervisor wishes to consult her/him.
6. The supervisor is asked to instruct the candidates that they are not to trim the raw edges of the fabric with pinking shears after the test has been completed.
7. When time for the test has expired, all must cease. Except that:
   1. Owing to the limited amount of pressing equipment usually available, candidates may press their work after time has expired;
   2. They must sew labels on a single fabric before placing their work in the envelope.
8. At the end of the examination the scraps of the fabric left after the cutting out should not be included with the garment. The pattern need not be returned with the test.
9. A first aid box and a reliable clock should be provided
