MARKING SCHEME

  1.    
    1. Outline six prophecies of Nathan concerning the messiah. 2 Samuel 7:3-17. (6 marks).
      • An heir from David’s lineage would be raised to sit on the throne.
      • God would always support such a king, that is His faithful love would never be withdrawn from the Messiah.
      • God would ensure that the kingdom of David would be everlasting.
      • The messiah would be a descendant of king David.
      • The messiah would be like a son to God.
      • The messiah would deliver and save people/deliver Israel from her political enemies.
      • God would keep the messiah’s kingdom strong.

    2. With specific examples, show how Jesus fulfilled the prophecies of Isaiah concerning the messiah. (8 marks).
      • The messiah would be filled with the holy spirit and anointed by God, during his baptism, a voice from heaven acknowledged Jesus as the son of God, the holy spirit descended upon him inform of a dove.
      • He would bring good news to the poor, Jesus said he had come to fulfill Isaiah’s prophecies after he read from the scroll in the synagogue at Nazareth.
      • He would be born of a virgin, Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would give birth to the messiah/Immanuel.
      • He is a wonderful counsellor, prince of peace and everlasting father, Jesus taught and spoke with authority, he explained parables to his followers, teachings on faith, proper use of wealth, and brought peace by his actions.
      • The messiah would bring joy and gladness to the world, during his ministry he healed many people like the woman with the flow of blood, the blind beggar and raised Jairus daughter and the widow’s son hence brought joy to all.
      • The messiah would establish an everlasting kingdom, he did this through preaching about God’s kingdom, and how one would qualify to be part of the kingdom, he gave his life to redeem many so as to join this everlasting kingdom.
      • The messiah would be despised and rejected, Jesus was despised and rejected in his hometown, he was opposed by the religious leaders who eventually handed him over to be crucified.
      • He bore the sins of human race, man of sorrow and grief, Jesus was arrested, was judged harshly although innocent, underwent painful suffering, was crucified with thieves and died for sake of humankind.
      • The messiah would be buried in a rich man’s tomb, Joseph of Arimathea who was a rich man, buried the body of Jesus.
      • The messiah would be innocent, without sin, during his passion, the crowd opted to release a sinner called Barabbas and he was innocently crucified.
      • The messiah would be exalted and made great, after his ascension, Jesus is exalted and sits on the right hand of God.

    3. Identify six lessons about God from Zechariah’s song, the Benedictus. (6 marks)
      • He is the Lord of Israel.
      • He has visited and redeemed his people.
      • God has raised up a horn of salvation in the house of his servant David.
      • God cares about his people/ he is merciful.
      • He is mighty.
      • God is holy and righteous.
      • He fulfills his promise he made through the old testament prophets.

    1. Identify six reasons why Jesus faced opposition in Galilean ministry. (6 marks)
      • Jesus and his disciples did not observe the law of Sabbath, he healed a man whose right hand was withered, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain on a sabbath, the religious leaders questioned Jesus’ actions and opposed him.
      • Jesus claimed to have authority to forgive sins, when he healed the paralytic man, they believed that only God had the power to forgive sins and therefore this was blasphemy.
      • Jesus and his disciples failed to observe the law on fasting, they compared his disciples with those of John who often fasted and prayed.
      • Jesus’ association with tax collectors and sinners, he befriended Levi and accepted invitation in his house, according to them it was wrong to mix with sinners since he claimed to be the messiah.
      • Jesus touched a man with leprosy which was against the Jewish laws since leprosy made one ritually unclean.
      • He was gaining popularity and reports went afar concerning him, the religious leaders were not comfortable with this.
      • Jesus challenged them to move from the old traditions to the new teachings that he brought, they were filled with anger and wrath.

    2. Describe the raising of the widow’s son at Nain. Luke 7:11-17. (8 marks).
      • Jesus went to a city called Nain together with his disciples, and a great crowd went with him.
      • As he drew near the gate, he met people carrying a dead man.
      • The dead man was the only son of the widow.
      • The widow was accompanied by a large crowd.
      • When the lord saw her, he had compassion on her.
      • He told the widow to stop weeping.
      • Jesus touched the bier/coffin and the bearers stood still.
      • He ordered the dead man to arise.
      • The dead man sat up and began to speak.
      • Jesus gave the man to his mother.
      • Fear seized them all.
      • They glorified God, saying a great prophet had risen among them.
      • The report concerning him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.

    3. State six virtues Christians can learn from the raising of the widow’s son at Nain. (6 marks).
      • Love/kindness.
      • Unity/cooperation.
      • Faith.
      • Humility.
      • Service.
      • Obedience.
      • Respect.
      • Thankfulness/praise/gratitude.

  3.  
    1. Describe the events that took place on Mount Olives. 22:39-53. (8 marks).
      • Jesus went to Mt. olives and the disciples followed him.
      • He told the disciples to pray that they may not enter into temptations.
      • He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw and knelt down and prayed saying,
      • “father if thou art will remove this cup from me, nevertheless not my will, but thine be done”.
      • When he rose from prayer, he found the disciples sleeping for sorrow.
      • Jesus woke them, saying they should pray so that they may not enter into temptations.
      • While he was still speaking, a crowd came led by Judas, one of his disciples.
      • He drew near to Jesus to kiss him.
      • Jesus asked Judas why he would betray the son of man with a kiss.
      • The disciples asked whether they would strike with the sword.
      • One of them struck off a slave’s ear.
      • Jesus restrained him, touched the slave’s ear and healed him.
      • Jesus asked the chief priests and the officers why they had come to arrest him as if he was a robber with swords and clubs.
      • He acknowledged that it was their hour and the power of darkness was at hand.

    2. Give six reasons why Judas betrayed Jesus. (6 marks).
      • He was greedy for money.
      • He was an informer of the Jewish authorities.
      • He was overcome by the power of the evil one.
      • He lacked moral courage to stand by Jesus during his moment of tribulation.
      • He was disappointed by Jesus’ stress on a spiritual kingdom rather than a political one.
      • It was God’s will for the fulfillment of the scriptures.
      • He was looking for fame and recognition.
      • He was unhappy with Jesus activities.

    3. Identify six measures taken by the church leadership on Christians who have fallen from their faith. (6 marks).
      • Encouraging them to repent/ confess.
      • Forgiving them/welcoming them back to church.
      • Visiting them in their homes and inviting them to theirs.
      • Offering guidance and counselling/ referring them to experts according to their needs.
      • Praying for them/intercede.
      • Being patient with them/reaching out to them, constant communication and follow up.
      • Offering them material needs/aid.

    1. State six Peter’s revelations on Joel’s prophecies on the day of Pentecost. (6 marks).
      • In the last days, God will pour out his holy spirit on all people/on maid servants and men servants.
      • Sons and daughters shall prophecy.
      • Young men shall see visions.
      • Old men shall dream.
      • God shall show wonders in heavens and on earth such as blood, fire, vapor and smoke.
      • The sun shall turn into darkness, the moon into blood before the day of the lord comes.
      • Those who call on the name of the lord shall be saved.

    2. Show how the Peter’s life was transformed on the day of Pentecost. (6 marks).
      • He was filled with the holy spirit.
      • He spoke in tongues like the other apostles.
      • He stood and defended the apostles who were accused of being drunk.
      • He gained the knowledge about the scriptures in the old testament/remembered the old testament prophecies.
      • He began witnessing the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.
      • He called people for repentance.
      • He was empowered to perform miracles.
      • He took up leadership role and baptized 3000 new converts who joined Christianity/ the church.

    3. How the church prepares the youth for leadership position. (8 marks)
      • Providing them with education and vocational training/empowering them with knowledge.
      • Appointing them as teachers of Sunday schools.
      • Organizing seminars, workshop for youth on leadership skills/roles.
      • Encouraging them to use their talents in the church.
      • Providing guidance and counselling services.
      • Encouraging / empowering them to take up challenging tasks and positions in institutions of learning.
      • Appointing good role models for them to emulate.
      • Accommodating their views during crucial church meetings and committees.
      • Assigning them duties to be carried out under supervision.

    1. Explain the importance of leisure in a Christian’s life. (6 marks).
      • It enables an individual to spend time to worship and strengthens relationship with God.
      • It enables one to rest the body/relax.
      • It helps one rejuvenate/regain lost energy.
      • It offers an opportunity for one to socialize with friends/family/fellowship with others.
      • Allows Christians to develop different talents/abilities given by God.
      • Provides one with opportunity to take care of the environment.
      • Gives one time to help the less fortunate/visit the sick/serve others.
      • Provides an opportunity to guide and counsel others/one other.
      • Helps one to discover new ideas/information/knowledge/sharpen their skills.
      • It helps one to maintain/improve one’s health.

    2. Outline seven factors that lead to the misuse of leisure in the modern society. (7 marks).
      • Too much money in the hands of the youth/young adults which is normally used for drugs/alcohol/contraceptives.
      • Lack of leisure facilities/inadequate facilities.
      • Negative peer pressure/bad company.
      • Negative influence of mass media/watching and reading pornographic materials.
      • Lack of proper guidance and counselling/education on how to use leisure inability to select/make the right decision.
      • Permissiveness in the society/lack of role models/moral decay/irresponsible parenthood.
      • Misunderstanding in the families/frustrations/depression/rebellion.
      • Idleness/boredom/unemployment/poverty.
      • Lack of Christian principles/disintegration of African moral values on how to spent leisure.

    3. Identify six criteria in both African traditional society and Christian principles which guide on proper use of leisure. (6 marks).
      • In both leisure should always be enjoyed after work.
      • In both, there should be a balance between active and passive leisure.
      • In both some leisure activities are controlled by gender, age and status/respect is mandatory during leisure.
      • In both leisure activities should be compatible with their beliefs/faith.
      • In both leisure activities that are harmful to oneself and others are strongly condemned/discouraged.
      • In both there are rules and regulations that has to be followed, failure to which one is disqualified or dismissed.
      • High degree of good and acceptable morals and principles must be upheld in both.

    1. State six ways in which the introduction of money economy has undermined the principles of Christian living. (6 marks).
      • Many people today struggle to acquire wealth and have no regard to their commitment to the true worship of God.
      • There is the use of unjust means of acquiring wealth like bribery and corruption, theft, prostitution, gambling, robbery with violence vises condemned in the Bible
      • The under-privileged/poor are usually discriminated against by the elite class/rich and yet there should be equality and fair treatment to all.
      • There is individualism and selfishness as opposed to communal sharing and generosity.
      • Bride wealth has been commercialized thus undermining love and equality between the couples.
      • There is power struggle and uncalled for competition to acquire wealth and protect it as opposed to being contented and enjoying God’s peace and joy.
      • Wage labor and business opportunities in search of property and money has undermined Christian family units.
      • Over-dependence on foreign aid and elite class has undermined virtues like Hard work and Diligence in order to earn a living as taught by St. Paul.

    2. Explain four life skills that should be used by Christians in managing their wealth. (8 marks).
      • Creative thinking - Christians can come up with ideas, products and services that are on high demand, hence making money through honest living. They can also create job opportunities for themselves and employ others to make money honestly.
      • Decision- making - A Christian can make the right decision on a business opportunity or career choice, to earn a living and become wealthy. One can decide to invest wisely and overcome corrupt means/can decide to utilize their wealth in line with biblical teachings. A Christian can also decide to report those practicing evils like stealing public property, fraud, gambling, corruption.
      • Self- esteem - Those who acquire wealth legally improve their self-esteem and relate well with others. A Christian with high self-esteem is able to develop their potential and make proper use of their wealth. A person with high self-esteem is confident, consistent, out-going and appreciates oneself and others. It allows one to be financially independent.
      • Assertiveness - An assertive Christian is firm, should not be moved or tempted in accepting bribes or corrupt practices. They should be vigilant in pointing out evils or mal-practices associated with wealth and riches.
      • Critical thinking - Helps a Christian to uncover any form of deception practices in using or acquiring wealth. It is an effective skill of investigating deeply and asking questions, speaking logically, convincingly in financial deals. Cautions one not to engage if financial deals that are not realistic.
      • Effective communication- A skill used by business experts to convince potential investors on business opportunities, Big companies also use this skill to market their products to potential customers.

    3. Six ways in which Christians in Kenya help to narrow the gap between the Rich and the poor.
      • Show concern towards orphans, street families, less fortunate by setting up homes and providing for their basic needs.
      • Provide formal/vocational training to orphans to empower them/make them self-reliant.
      • Church leaders advocate for equitable distribution of national resources in all areas.
      • Christians do preach on the values of hard-work, fairness, integrity as a way of eradicating poverty.
      • They pay taxes as role models
      • Strongly preach against evils like corruption.
      • Advocates for just wages for workers to improve their living standards.
      • Christians engaged in business should be role models/ avoid cheating and overcharging goods.
      • Should initiate poverty eradication programmes countrywide.
      • Create job opportunities and consider the most deserving to be employed.
      • Should advocate for the implementation of just laws in the society.
