SECTION B: (20 MARKS)
This section is compulsory

  1.  
    1.  
      1. Repair a white cotton knitted sweater with a hole.   (5 marks)
        • Collect equipment and notion needed
        • Trim the ragged edge carefully not to overdo it and enlarge the hole
        • Using a darning needle and matching colour of thread, work from the wrong side of garment. Start working along the length of garment
        • Work 10mm from the edge of the hole (into the fabric). Once the edge of the hole is reached catch the free loops to prevent laddering, pass thread through another free loop directly opposite and on from one edge of the hole to the other working in rows to cover the whole hole.
        • Leave a loop at the end of each row to allow for shrinkage.
        • Turn the work and work across the opposite direction (wefts). Arrange the threads to go over and under the previous threads (worked along warps) interlacing to cover the hole. Secure the stiches firmly
        • Store equipment well for future use
      2. Launder the knitted sweater you have repaired.   (7 marks)
        • Collect the equipment and materials needed to save on time and energy
        • Shake the sweater to remove loose dirt
        • Soak for a short time to loosen dirt in cold water
        • Squeeze out from the soaking water
        • Wash in warm soapy water by kneading and squeezing method to remove dirt
        • Rinse severally in warm clean water to remove soap and dirt.
        • Final rinse in cold water to freshen
        • Squeeze out of water to facilitate quick drying.
        • Dry flat under the sun to remove moisture and prevent stretching
        • While slightly damp press with a warm iron to remove creases and prevent stretching. Fold and store
        • Clean the equipment used and store appropriately
    2. Sweep a pit latrine with an earthen floor.   (5 marks)
      • Collect materials and equipment to save on time and energy
      • Wear protective gloves. Open the cover and clean it.
      • Sprinkle disinfectant water on the floor to reduce dust and kill germs
      • Sweep using a broom meant for the latrine only from the sides towards the pit as you sweep the dirt into it.
      • Sweep using long, low strokes to reduce raising the dust
      • Leave the door open for a short time to ventilate. Pour little ask around the pit to control bad smells and to disinfect.
      • Replace tissue
      • Replace the lid and close the door
      • Clean the equipment used and store appropriately
    3. Daily clean a long handled broom with synthetic bristles. (3 marks)
      • Remove any fluffs, threads and bits of hair from the broom after use using a blunt object.
      • Shake off any dust left after sweeping
      • Store it by hanging ensuring no pressure is exerted to the bristles.

SECTION C: (40 MARKS)
Answer any two questions in this section

    1. Highlight four practices in preparation and blanching green vegetables for preservation.

      • Wash in clean water to remove dirt
      • Cut them as for cooking for faster drying
      • Blanch them in plenty of boiling water for a minute to ten minutes
      • Cool them in cold or iced water for equal time as for boiling
      • Drain the vegetables and spread them on a tray or mat so as to dry quickly
      • Cover mat or tray with netting material and place in direct sunlight
      • Turn regularly for quick drying
      • Test for readiness it should be crispy and dry
      • Store in airtight container
    2. Suggest four practical ways one can improvise storage facilities for clothes and household articles at home.   (4 marks)
      • Tie a rope or wire between two wall fastened with nails and hang clothes over it or put clothes on a hanger and suspend them on the rope
      • Use a line carton box to store folded clothes
      • A bar of wood fixed on the wall with nails, then hung clothes on hangers
      • A rack with hooks to hold hangers
      • Laundry basket to keep folded clothes
    3. Name three vaccines given at 9 months in the immunization schedule.     (3 marks)

    4. Explain the three ways of buying goods on credit.      (3 marks)
      • Hire purchase/ installment credit - a form of installment credit whereby goods are obtained by paying a certain percentage in form of deposit. The balance is paid later through equal installments spread over a period of time.
      • Non installment credit - this is where one obtains goods and services for a period of time and then pays up when bills arrive
      • Use of credit cards - this is where a consumer uses a card to buy goods and services. The payment is paid from the consumer's bank account.

    2. Highlight four ways of caring for lighting fixtures at home. (4 marks)
      • Dust them regularly
      • Repair the flex where necessary
      • Ensure table and floor lamps are stable and firm to avoid falling
      • Check wattage to prevent blowing out due to excess wattage more than they can bear.
    3. One way of improving the texture of baby's porridge is adding cassava flour. Explain how to prepare cassava roots for this fortification. (4 marks)
      • Peel them and cut them into small pieces.
      • Wash and drain water.
      • Spread them on a wire tray/canvas in the sun.
      • Cover with another wire or canvas to keep birds away.
      • Turn them occasionally to fasten drying.
      • Once dry grind into flour ready for use.

      • Collect equipment and sewing notions to save on time and energy
      • Design and cut out a desired shape and size depending on the size ot the tear
      • Place the WS of the patch with the ES of the garment to cover the tear.
      • Pin and tack
      • Remove pins and attach the patch with decorative stitches all round
      • Remove tacking
      • Press flat from the RS
      • Store the garment and equipment for future use
    3. Highlight four breastfeeding techniques a mother should apply for proper breastfeeding.
      (4 marks)
      • Take a cup of warm drink before breast feeding
      • Clean the breast by wiping with warm water and a clean cloth
      • Sit on comfortable chair or lie flat on a comfortable surface
      • Hold the baby supporting the head with one hand and direct breast to the mouth with the other hand
      • Allow the baby to suck from one breast for a short time then turn it to the other
      • Press the chin gently for the baby to release the nipple
      • Allow the whole areola into the baby's mouth and not only the nipple
      • Wind the baby after breastfeeding
    4. Explain how the following factors affect consumer buying. (4 marks)
      1. Income - a reduction or increase income will reduce or improve the purchasing power of a household
      2. Complimentary goods - there are items that the need for one will create the need for the other e.g. tea and sugar
      3. Need to define a certain self-image. - this is the desire to live above one's means in order to portray a certain status may influence one to spend above their means.
      4. Family set up.- a family with both young babies and older children will influence in type of items bought and amount of money spent on them.
    5. Name and explain the three types of hems.   (3 marks)
