Answer any TWO questions in this section in the spaces provided after question 22.

  1. Differentiate between a wear and a tear. (2mks)
    • A tear is a hole on a particular section of a garment due to sudden forces while a wear is weakening or thinning of a part of an article/ garment due to continuous friction or rubbing. (Correct definitions 1x2)

  2. Give two reasons why it is important to dry white clothes outdoor in the sun (2mks)
    • The sun disinfects clothes
    • The sun bleaches white articles making them whiter.

  3. State the general rules followed when repairing clothes (2mks)
    • Repair clothes as soon as possible/timely
    • Repair should be done before washing the clothes
    • Repair should cover the worn area adequately
    • It should be made as inconspicuous as possible using matching thread.

    • Should be loose to enable the baby more its hands and feet.
    • Should be soft for tender skin of the baby
    • Should be light in weight for the baby
    • Should be preferably made of natural fibres e.g cotton, linen, wool and their blends

    • Should not generate static charges

    • Easy to use one simple switches on and off.

    • Ventilation
      • the process of introducing fresh air in a room so that undesirable gases are eliminated
    • Flower arrangement (2mks)
      • Is the art of arranging flowers and other plant materials to produce a harmonious appearance, texture and colour combination.

  18. State three pieces of information found on labels packed goods (3mks)
    • Name of the product
    • Net quantity of the contents
    • List of ingredients used and their quantity per volume
    • Name and place of business of the manufacture or distributor
    • Any artificial colouring, flavouring and preservative used
    • The manufacturing and expiry dates
    • In some canned food. It shows styles of packaging e.g diced pineapples or mincemeat.

  19. You have been left to take care of the home while your parents are away
    1. Outline how you would use charcoal as an abrasive in cleaning a stained aluminium sufuria (6mks)
      • Collect charcoal
      • Grind the charcoal finely
      • Store the charcoal in a dry covered container
      • Wash/ scrub sufuria using sisal fibre/cloth and the charcoal in hot soapy water
      • Work towards the same direction when scrubbing. Rub stains firmly till removed
      • Rinse thoroughly in clean hot water
      • Dry on a dish rack/using dish cloth
      • Store in a dry place
      • Clean and store equipment use.

    2. Clean a duster that has been used to clean a dusty surface (6mks)
      • Collect equipment and materials needed
      • Shake off loose dirt
      • Wash thoroughly in warm soapy water using friction method
      • Rinse in warm clean water
      • Finally rinse in cold water to freshen fabric
      • Dry in the sun/ in the open air
      • Store in a dry well ventilated place
      • Clean and store equipment and materials used.

    3. Launder your mother’s silk dress. (8mks)
      • Collect all equipment and materials needed
      • Wash using kneading and squeezing in warm soapy water. Use a mild detergent
      • Rinse in warm clean water to remove all traces of detergent
      • Finally rinse in cold water into which methylated spirit has been added to give a crispy and lustrous fish
      • Squeeze out excess water by hand them
      • Fold in a clean towel to squeeze out moisture
      • Iron using a moderately iron work fast so complete ironing before it completely dries to produce a smooth gloss
      • Air to dry completely
      • Fold and store appropriately
      • Clean and store equipment used

  20.        
    1. Explain the first aid procedure you would administer to your brother who has got a deep cut on the hand and the bleeding is severe. (6mks)
      • Wear clean disposable gloves to avoid infecting the wound
      • Press on to the wound with clean hands or pad of cotton
      • Clean out all the dirt
      • Raise the wounded part
      • Tie just above the wound with a fold cloth to wide belt
      • Loosen the cloth after a few minutes to avoid cutting blood supply to the injured part completely
      • Take patient to the doctor as quick as possible for tetanus injection.
        (6 correct points x 1mk)

    2. Suggest four advantages of constructing traditional houses (4mks)
      • They are easy to construct/short time
      • Materials for construction are readily available
      • They are cheap to construct
      • Do not require specialized labour/ expertise to construct
      • They are attractive if well designed

    3. Mention four ways in which a cook/chef can contaminate food (4mks)
      • When the chef is suffering from contagious diseases such a typhoid, cholera e.tc
      • Handling food with dirty /unwashed hands
      • Not wearing protective clothing such as apron/headgear to protect contaminants from outdoor clothing
      • When tasting food using fingers or a spoon and returning it in food/licking
      • When the chef uses dirty utensils such as a dirty chopping board.
      • When the chef has a wound in the hand and does not cover it during cooking and food preparation
      • When dirt from rings and bangles come into contact with food/ when bangles rings and scars are not removed when handling food.

    4. Outline the procedure of shirring on yoke of a baby’s dress (6mks)
      • Work several rows of permanent running stitches 6mm apart on the yoke leaving threads hanging at the end
      • Pull the stitches till the required width is attained the secure at the end
      • Distribute the shirrs evenly on the area
      • Cut a piece of fabric on grain and use it to back the shirrs on the W.S to keep them in position and to prevent them from breaking
      • Fold over the edges of the backing
      • Press the hem to the edges of the shirred area.
        (½ x 12mark points min)

    1. Name four methods of steaming cassava (4mks)
      • Plate method
      • Bowl steaming method
      • Using a colander
      • Using a steamer
        (1mk x 4points)

    2. Your friend has chosen dry cleaning as her main method of laundering clothes. Give three reasons why you would discourage her from such a decision(3mks)
      • Dry-cleaning is expensive since the liquid solvents used are costly
      • The solvent used are poisonous if inhaled and can affect the health of the user
      • The solvents are very volatile/evaporate fast hence wasteful/ don’t work fast
      • The solvents are highly inflammable, they can catch fire of exposed to flames.

    3. State four disadvantages of open drains (4mks)
      • They can become a breeding place for pests
      • They can be unsightly and smelly if not cleaned constantly
      • People can fall into them and get hurt
      • Can get flooded during heavy rains and children can drown in them
      • Uncemented drains cause soil erosion as edges continue to wear out.

    4. With the aid of well labelled diagrams describe the procedure of working a French seam (9mks)
      • Place two pieces together with W.S sides facing each other and right side outside
      • Tack 6mm above the fitting line mastering flat edges
      • Machine along the tacking. Finish off threads ends and remove tackings
      • Trim seam turnings to 3mm and press open
      • Turn the work to W.S and knife edgePlace right sides facing each other, pin and tack along the fitting line enclosing raw
      • edges completely
      • Remove pins machine/ stitch along the tackings/along the fitting line
      • Remove tackings
      • Press the seam towards the back of the garment.

      • Wash to ensure the baby handles it when clean
      • Assemble the dismantle parts and repair

    3. Discuss three ways a lactating mother should take care of herself. (6mks)
      • Feed on a balanced diet – also increase sugar fluids for more production, iron to replace blood lost during child birth, calcium and phosphorous for bone and teeth development for the baby.
      • Observe hygiene – body and clothes should be clean since she is usually in close contact with baby dirt may make
      • Apply some cream on teats- to lubricating after breastfeeding to stop drying and cracking nipples
      • Should not be anxious annoyed or worried- such emotions reduce milk production
      • Should take adequate time to relax with the baby- to get enough rest and sleep.

    4. Outline the procedure of preparing a set –in sleeve ready for attachment.Use one diagram to illustrate. (7mks)
      • Make the opening at the lower end of the sleeve ie pattern provides for one
      • Manage fullness of the lower edge of the sleeve as desired
      • Make two rows of gathering stitches between the notches through sleeve crown
      • Leave threads hanging at the end of each gathering stitch
      • Complete the underarm seam and press flat
      • Attach the cuff/frill to the lower end of the sleeve
