  41. You are helping your elder sister to prepare for her KOITOcoming up next weekend, theme colour being RED.
    1. Launder her silk party Dress and Pick and Store fresh flowers to be arranged later (10mks)
      • Silk Dress (6mks)
        • Collect equipment and material to save time and energy. Shake to remove loose dirt. Wash in warm soapy water (mild detergent) by kneading and squeezing to remove maximum dirt. Pay attention to collar, coffs, armpit and hem. Rinse severally, in clean warm water to remove dirt and soap. Finally, rinse in clean cold water added methylated spirit to give a crispy, lustrous finish and freshen. Squeeze out excess water by hand not to harm fibres. Hang to dry under a shade secured by padded pegs bit to fall. Iron very fast (quickly) while slightly damp with a moderately hot iron to achieve a smooth gloss appearance, iron on the right side to obtain a satin finish, air to dry completely. Store in a wardrobe on a padded hanger to avoid creasing the dress. Clean and store equipment and material for later use.

      • Fresh Flowers (4mks)
        • Collect equipment and material to save time and energy. Pick Red Fresh half bloom flowers and foliage to stay longer as well as foliage, Pick the clean foliage to remove soil and dust. Keep the flowers and foliage in clean cold water with a little sugar in a bucket to condition. Select flowers and plants without scent not to affect people with allergy. Clean and store equipment and material for later use.

    2. Thorough clean her Formica dressing table with a mirror. (10MKS)
      • Formica Dressing Table (6mks)
        • Collect equipment and materials to save time and energy. Empty the dressing table for easy cleaning. High and low dust the dressing table paying attention to edges, frames, legs ad underneath to remove all loose dirt. Clean the Formica by wiping with a cloth wrung out of warm soapy water to remove maximum dirt. Rinse thoroughly with a clean cloth wrung of clean warm water to remove all dirt and soap completely.Buff to shine with a non-fluffy cloth.

      • Mirror (4mks)
        • Shake the containers of the glass cleaner, hold it 15cm away and spray it sparingly, spread the cleaner with a soft cloth all over the mirror. Rub hard to remove all stains. Buff the mirror and the frame with a clean soft lint free cloth to shine.Clean and store all equipment and material for later use.

  42.               
    1. Describe how to take measurements of the following body parts.
      • Inner trouser length
        Take measurements from the crotch to the desired length of the person
      • Hips
        Take measurements around the widest and fullest part of the hips approximately 15 to 18cm below the waist line of the person
      • Crotch length
        Take measurements of the person in a sitting position from waist to top of the cut
      • Wrist measurement
        Take measurements around the natural waistline

    2. Mention four points to consider when planning meals for young children, (4mks)
      • The meal should be balanced
      • Serve food in small quantities.
      • Provide food that requires chewing to strengthen teeth.
      • Serve and present food attractively.
      • The food should not be overflavoured.

    3. Give your importance of habitat training (4mks)
      • Teach child to be responsible for his items.
      • Good etiquette to encourage proper (breathing and physical fitness).
      • Motivate to boost the childs self-confidence.
      • Establish and maintain relationship with others.

    4. Outline four roles of advertisement
      • Informs the consumer on the availability of certain goods or services and how to access them
      • It is a quick and effective way of passing information about a new product
      • Gives information on the varieties available for a specific product
      • Gives additional information about the product eg nutritive value of foods or the characteristics of a textile fabric

    5. Briefly state the uses of the following Alkalis in the home (4mks)
      • Sodium hydroxide – for removing fatty grease from cookers, ovens and sinks.
      • Ammonia for removing grease from surfaces
      • Sodium bicarbonate for softening hard water for laundry work.
      • Borax for removing stains from delicate fabrics made from animal fibres such as wool and silk-Making homemade starch.

    1. Describe four methods of disposing household refuse (4mks)
      • Burning
        Piece of hair, papers and clothes should be burnt.
      • Burying
        Broken bottles, glass, pots and empty tins should be buried in a deep hole.
      • Feeding the animals
        Vegetable peels such as peas, cabbage, maize and remains of food can be used to feed domestic animals.
      • Converting refuse to manure
        Plant leaves, flowers and vegetable peels should be collected and put in a compost pit to decompose and form manure.
      • Recycling
        Certain types of inorganic refuse, such as plastic containers and bottles are treated using chemicals and they re-used.
      • Collection by local authorities
        In the urban areas (towns and cities), the local; authority collects the refuse and disposes it of in designated areas.

    2. Give your points to observe when laying pattern pieces onto prepared fabric before cutting out. (4mks)
      • Ensure that the pattern pieces are flat so as to achieve the accurate results.
      • All the required pattern pieces should be available so that all parts of the garment are cut at the same time.
      • All pattern pieces should be firmly pinned onto the fabric to ensure accuracy. Study the pattern….. …..and the layout.
      • The work surface should be large enough to accommodate the whole fabric.
      • Pins should not be sticking out to avoid damaging the scissors or hurting the workers.
      • Use sufficient number of pins for efficiency.

    3. List four contents of a first aid kit and their uses respectively (4mks)
      • Cold water – poured on burns/scald to relieve pain
        -reduces damage to skin
      • Antiseptic solution – clean wounds.
      • Petroleum jelly – soothes burns.
      • Sterile gauze – covers wounds.
      • Plastics – cover minor cuts.
      • Cotton wool – used to clean off fluids.
      • Tweezers- remove foreign botches from muscles,
      • Safety pin – fastens bandage.
      • Disposable gloves – to wear for protection of first aid when attending to victim.
      • Clean drinking water – to quench thirst.
      • Chemical thermometers – to take temperature of victim.
      • Small pair of scissors – to cut bandage.
      • Triangular sling – to support fractured limb.

    4. Outline four advantages of mortgaging as a way of providing shelter
      • Enables one with low income to acquire the house
      • The buyer starts enjoying the house after paying a amall deposit
      • It gives the buyer a chance to comfortably and conveniently pay small regular installments
      • It promotes optimal spending by the family because it somehow forces one to plan income expenditure

    5. Explain four factors which may affect the eating habits of a community (5mks)
      • Culture and Traditions
        In some African communities, when an animal is slaughter, different Parts are eaten by different groups according to age or genders.
      • Food Availability
        Most tend to eat foods which are locally available because they are familiar e.g. those around lakes, cherish fish and those in potato zones cherish potatoes.
      • Food Taboo
        Customs or beliefs that forbid the use of a type of food by a particular group of people.
      • Income
        The amount of money families in the community earn will greatly influence the kind of food they eat. Rich families eat more fat and protein food compared to those with less income.
      • Lifestyle
        The kind of lifestyle one leads influences eating habit as some people may be too busy to have time for 3 meals hence end up with one meal.
      • Calamities
        Droughts and floods affect crops, leaving people with no choice over what they eat.
      • Religious Beliefs
        Some religions forbid eating certain foods, Islam forbid eating pork.
      • Ignorance
        People who are ignorant or lack knowledge on nutrition will tend to eat meals that are not balanced.

    1. Explain four factors that determine the repair method to be used on an article. (4mks)
      • Size of the tear
        A patch is better for a larger tear since its strong.
      • Weight of Fabric Construction
        …..is more suitable on heavy fabric than patching.
      • Method of fabric construction
        ………… is suitable for knitted fabric than woven
      • Cleaning Method
        Articles that require washing using the friction method are better patched.
      • Effect desired
        A decorative patch would be suitable, if one wants to crate interest bit calico would be to give strength.

    2. Explain four points on the care of a lactating mother. (4mks)
      • Provide a balanced diet with lots of fluids, iron, calcium and proteins to ensure sufficient supply of healthy milk to the baby.
      • The baby should be held in a comfortable position when sucking so as not to choke.
      • The mother should observe high hygiene standard to avoid infection of herself and baby. Ensure ample time to the mother for adequate rest to guarantee a happy and healthy baby,
      • Provide plenty of support in cleaning so that the mother is not overwhelmed thus stressed.
      • Assist to provide complementary feed whenever possible for rapid growth of baby.

    3. A bodice block of a blouse is given below, indicate your possible pattern markings and their uses respectiv4ely.(4mks).
      • Drawn on diagram
        • Straight grain - solid line with arrows on both ends to position pattern pieces on straight thread.
        • Dart-shape/control fullness. Single notch
        • Notch- matches different pieces. Along cutting line
        • Seam line- Stitching line, construction lines, fitting line permanent stiches worked broken line.
        • Dot - balance points matched with other similar dots. ( 2 seams meet, gathers made, on darts, collar points, shoulder seams fall on sleeve heads).

    4. Explain four ways of introducing air into flour mixtures. (4mks)
      • Sieving – it aerate flour. The more it is sieved the greater the aeration.
      • Beating – it introduces air into flour mixture such as in making ………..
      • Creaming – fat and sugar trap air as the mixture is creamed.
      • Whisking- when egg and sugar are whisked together, air is trapped.
      • Rubbing in – air is trapped
      • Folding – pastry folding traps air into layers.

    5. State and explain four factors that may affect family saving. (4mks)
      • Loss of income
        When one loses source of income, he may be forced to use the savings, hence it may not be possible to save any more for emergencies.
      • Increase income
      • An increase in income enables one to have more money thus increase the amount available for saving.
      • Change in set goals
        when one changes, priorities /goals, it affect savings because one incurs more expenses or costs on the new needs thus, may reduce/increase amount available for saving.
      • Inflation
        An increase in the prices of commodities will result in more money being allocated in order to meet needs; as a result, one may not have much to save.
      • Lack of commitment
        When a budget is not strictly followed, one may end up buying items not needed and thus reduction of money available for saving.
