  1. Imaginative composition (compulsory) (20 mks)

    EITHER
    1. Write a composition ending with …………….. had I listened to my parents wise words I would not be in this sorry state.
      OR
    2. Write a composition to illustrate the truth in the saying “Patience pays.”
  2. Compulsory Set Text :
    Blossoms of the Savannah by H. R. Ole Kulet (20 mks)
    Irresponsible parenting can lead to instability in a family. Discuss the truth of this statement using the novel “Blossoms of the Savannah” by H. Kulet
  3. The optional Set Text; (20 mks)
    Answer any ONE of the following questions.
    EITHER
    1. The Short Story
      “In the face of adversity one requires strong-will power to succeed.” Justify this statement referring to the story: “No need to lie”. by Rolf Schmid

      OR
    2. David Mulwa : Inheritance
      “A leader who is unfit to rule causes untold suffering for the citizens.” Drawing illustrations from David Mulwa’s “Inheritance”, write an essay to validate this statement.

      OR
    3. The Novel:
      John Steinbeck “The Pearl”
      “Juana’s steadfast spirit makes her a pillar of strength in her family.” Justify this statement using “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck.

  2. Irresponsible Parenting can lead to instability in a family.
    Accept any relevant introduction (2 mks)
    1. Hatred – Olekaelo hates Resian from birth. He hoped mama Milanoi would give birth to boy for a second born.
      • He gets disappointed when he gets a girl.
      • Vents his frustration on the poor child.
      • Effects – Resian realizes her father does not like her right from her cradle.
      • He detests her, treats her harshly, openly favours Taiyo. Distance created.
      • Her personality is affected since she grew up sullen, bewildered and resentful (pg 10).
      • She becomes rebellious, angry and bitter.
      • Her nature was darkened by melancholy, self – doubt.
      • At home she became difficult to deal with especially with her father
      • Ole-kaelo as a parent failed to offer lose, acceptance and assurance.
    2. Forced Marriage:- Ole Kaelo fails to protect the girls from Oloisudori. Resian was left alone in the house when she encountered Oloisudori.
      • Ole kaelo agrees to Mary Resian to Oloisudori: He is aware he is a criminal, a bank robber and a gangster (pg. 194)
      • He is willing to cast a blind eye on the fact that Oloisudori is old enough to be Resian father.
      • He is willing to use Resian as the sacrificial lamb to secure his palatial home and business contracts.
      • He allows Oloisudori to black mail him with a demand for his daughters hand in marriage. Giving out Resian to Oloisudori is too small a price.
      • He betrays his daughters when he agrees to the plan fo her abduction should she turn down Oloisudori’s marriage proposal> (pg 191).
      • He fails in his responsibility to care and protect his daughter because of material gain.
      • Resian feels betrayed is full of anger and bitterness – she runs away from home, where she undergoes such trauma at the hands of Oloirinkoi.
      • Resian has suicidal thoughts.
      • Olokaeilo chose to please the Maa people at the expense of his family.
    3. Education – Olekaelo refuses to take Resian to Egerton University.
      • Her ambition was to study veterinary doctor.
      • She asks her mother and Taiyo to make the request for but never go the chance.
      • When Resian vehemently asks if he will take her to university, he informs her that formal education that she had was enough. (pg 207)
      • Suggests that she can join Parallel program once she marries Oloisudori.
      • He also fails in assisting Taiyo pursue her music interests.
      • He fails in His responsibility to fully educate her daughters when brought a big conflict between his and the girls.
    4. Mama Milanoi’s silence;-
      • She fails to protect the girls from the harsh mean traditions.
      • When Resian tries to confide her fears to her she dismisses and scolds her for referring to Oloisudo as a manner less old man.
      • She sends her back to serve the old lustful man tea.
      • She does little to correct the tension between Resian and her father does not come to rescue her.
      • Taiyo is surprised at her mothers inability to protect Resian from mistreatment from her father.
      • She betrays Resian – she failed her.
      • She was fearful of her husband and was owed to silence even when injustices were being committed against her own daughters.
      • Her silence pained Resian beyond words.
      • She betrays Taiyo by tricking her into going to Esoit to undergo faced circumcision.
        Conclusion:
        The once good and peaceful family falls apart due to the parents failure to take up her roles responsibly.
        In the face of adversity one requires strong - will power. Justify – referring to the story “No need to lie”.
  3. The Short Story:
    • Introduction:
      In the face of adversity, the most important thing is to fact it bravely, remain positive with unwavering determination. This was the case of Rolf Schmid that led to his healing. (Accept any other relevant introduction).
    • Acceptance:
      Mr. Schmid was so scared when he was told they would take the biopsy. He was scared at the thought of having cancer or Aids. But later he pulled himself from self-pity because he realized that his children needed him and he needed to see them grow up. He had children, a wife, a business and a future. He repeated this over and over again in his mind as though he had to send this message to every cell in his body. His will power was strong and determined.
    • Feeding:
      He was determined to eat in order to survive. After a wave of pain was over, he rushed to the kitchen, took some minced meat, vegetables, carrots, leeks and celery and 3 litres of water and cooked. It was so painful to let the fluid pass through the mouth, and yet he had to eat. He used a rubber pipe to pass the food through his throat to the stomach. It was necessary to eat, and he did it as a weapon to fight cancer. An after finishing his meal, he would congratulate himself.
    • Meditation:
      After eating, Rolf knelt in the bed put his head down and closed his eyes. In his imagination, he summoned his Japanese Judo senses in front of him. His mind was concentrated on defeating the enemy. This time he knew it was not about winning cups, medals, glory or fame. It was about winning the victory of his life, fighting cancer. This is a show of determination to fight cancer.
    • Chemotherapy:
      Rolf was informed by the doctor that he needed 4 sessions of chemotherapy to kill the cancer cells. He dreaded the word chemotherapy and all it stood for, including the loss of hair and becoming sick. He sought encouragement from his friend Alberto, who informed him he had to be very brave. This is when he decided that he was going to confirm to the nay-Sayers that cancer is just a process that requires a strong will power, food and optimism. The first day after chemotherapy, he went to play a game with is friends at the polo club and really surprised his mates. The nurse was delighted with his progress.
    • Operation
      Rolf had to take a trip to Stuttgart, Germany where professor Terrahe and his team waited for him for surgery. He worried about whether he would survive the operation. But he confirmed to himself again that he was not ready to die. At this point, he had lost about 40Kgs, his face was hollow and he had lost half the amount of his hair to chemotherapy. When anaesthesia was administered, he felt no fear and no anxiety; just a wonderful carefree feeling of surrender to he deep anaesthetic – induced unconsciousness. After the operation, the doctors said they achieved the best possible results. He quickly lifted his left arm to confirm that he was not paralyzed on the left side and the right to make sure he was able to play polo. He thanked God he was alive.
      (Accept any other relevant point)
    • Conclusion
      From the above discussion, it is quite clear that Rolf went against all odds in pursuit for his health. He defeated cancer through his strong will to live.

  4. The Pearl
    • Yuanas steadfast spirit makes her a Pillar of strength in her family:
    • Accept any relevant introduction (2 mks)
    • Juana as an ideal wife who supports her spouse under all cirmstances.
    • She is dutiful and treasures her family.
    • When coyotito is bitten by a scorpion, she springs to the baby to suck the poison from his wound.
    • She prays to the virgin Mary and some gods.
    • She suggests they go to the doctor if he can not come to them.
    • When she senses the Pearl may be behind their woes, she urges Kino to get rod of it because it is evil. “This Pearl is like sin!, it will destroy us! (Pg. 59)
    • She is more enduring than Kino – she could arch her back in a child pain, with hardly a cry, could stand fatigue & hunger.
    • In the canoe she was a strong woman
    • She is decisive and determined as a fierce lioness.
    • When the doctor declines to treat Coyotito she accompanies Kino to the sea to search for Pearl.
    • She was determined to get a solution…. Finally they found the greatest Pearl of the world.
    • She is rational and sensible – she tries to throw the Pearl in the sea because it is evil.
    • She is Religious and Prayerful. Prays for her husband and child. Maybe it is her prayers that lead to the recovery of their son and discovery of the greatest Pearl.
    • She is strong – willed – she accompanies Kino to the city to sell the Pearl with trackers following behind.
    • She is assertive a trait that was not used with her earlier.
    • Supporting – walks beside her husband with Coyotito dies.
    • Her strong will and steadfast spirit hold her family together.
    • Her great love and commitment to the family is seen when she helps Kino on his feet, takes him to the house before wiping blood from his face when he was attacked at night.
    • Her strength, loyalty, obedience and courage makes her a strong pillar for her family.
      Accept any other relevant point and conclusion. (2 mks)
