  • A pattern of a child’s dress is provided. You are advised to study the sketches, the question paper and the layout before you begin the test.


  1. Pattern pieces.
    A - Blouse front
    B - Blouse back
    C - Pocket Front shirt facing
    D - Collar
    E - Sleeve

    NB. Interfacing for the collar should be cut from same fabric using the collar pattern.
  2. Light weight plain cotton fabric 45cm long by 90cm wide.
  3. Sewing thread to match the fabric.
  4. elastic 12cm long and 1cm wide.
  5. One large envelop and bodkin needle/safety pins.

Using the materials provided, cut out and make up the left half of the blouse/bodiece to show the following;

  1. Making of a double stitched seam at the shoulder, on the RS
  2. Making of the side seam using an open seam.
  3. Neatening of the facing.
  4. Preparation of an interfaced collar.
  5. Preparation and attachment of the collar by sandwiching it between the facings.
  6. Preparation and attachment of the patch pocket.
  7. Management of the hem using slip hemming stiches (blouse front only)
  8. Making of a button hole by hand.
  9. Making a casing at the hem of the sleeve leaving an insertion gap of 1.5cm a centimeter away from the sleeve seam.
  10. The working of gathers at the crown of the sleeve.
  11. The attaching of the sleeve.
  12. The insertion of elastic without closing the insertion gap.
  13. Cutting of a straight tear and repairing using fishbone stitch.


  • At the end of the examination, firmly sew on your work a single fabric, a label bearing your name and index number.
  • Remove the needles and pins from your work then fold your work neatly and place it in the envelop provided
  • Do not put scraps of fabric with your work.


The following materials will be provided by the school:

  1.  Plain light weight cotton fabric 45cm long by 90cm wide
  2. Sewing cotton thread to match the fabric
  3. Elastic band 12cm long and 1 cm wide
  4. Safety pins
  5. One large envelope

Marking Scheme

 Work well pressed and folded
Label (1) firmly fixed (11/2 ) without concealing details(1) and on single (1) fabric
Pins needles (1 ½ ) and tacking threads and
Unnecessary threads removed.(1)

- Blouses front cut smoothly (1/2) and on a straight grain
- Blouse back cut smoothly ½ and on straight grain (1 ½ )
- Pocket cut smoothly and on straight grain (1 ½ )
- Collar cut smoothly (1/2) and on
straight grain (1 1/2)
 If not double stitched seam award ‘O’
(a). seam made on R.S (1/2)
(b). Straight stitchery (1) on shoulder line
(c). Raw edges well tucked under ½
(d). 2nd row of stitchery don close to the fold ½ and straight ½
e). Correct width (½) 6mm (to within 2mm)
(f). Even in width (1)
(g). Seam well pressed flat (½) on R.S ½) and W.S(½)
 4   OPEN SEAM – SIDE SEAM      
 If not open seam award ‘0’
(a). Seam jointed with straight stitchery (1 ½ )
(b). Well neatened (½) raw edges
(c). Evenness (1½) of seam allowances
i.e. 1cm to within 2mm
(e). Seam well pressed open (1) and flat on R.S (1 ½ ) and W.S(1)
 (a). Collar correctly interfaced (½)
(b). Collar pieces trimmed (½)
(c). Collar well knife edged (½)
(d). Correct size (½) and shape (½) of collar 1 1(superimposed)
(e). Collar top stitched (½) neatly and correctly
(f). Facing well edge stitched (½)
(g). Collar sandwiched between garment and facing at the front (½)

(l) Facing flat and catch stitched (½) along shoulder ½ seam(½)

(c).Pocket hem machine top stitched (1 ½ ) straight (½)

(f). Facing correctly managed at the hem line (machined trimmed corner snipped and pushed out knife edge)(1)
 8  BUTTON HOLE      
 (a). Button hole cut (1) on straight grain (1)
(b). Well-made buttonhole even stitched (1)
(c). Buttonhole stiches used (1)
(d). quality of buttonhole stich (1) tension and density
(e). Edges of buttonhole well stitched (1)
(f). Correct size 2cm (½) and position (½) of buttonhole
 (i). Insertion gap 1.5cm a centimeter away from sleeve seam (2)
(ii). Gathers stiches worked using machine from notch to notch(3)
(iii). Setting-in-sleeve into armhole. With smooth stitchery.(2)
(iv). Notches matching (2)
(v). Underarm seam matching side seam (1)
(vi). Well inserted elastic band (1) and well finished (1)
 (a).Well cut size tear (1)
(b). Fishbone stitch work (2)
(c). Loops formed at ends of stitches (2)
