1. COMPREHENSION (20MKS).
   Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.
   Everyone faces circumstances when money becomes scarce for days or weeks. The neccesary adjustments and sacrifices are made and, in the end, the situation balances itself. However, things may reach a critical stage where one owes much more than they own. Under such circumstances, mental and health problems may arise. In order to prevent this, a few firm measures must be put into place.
   Other times, the fundamental problem is when one loses one’s job and be unemployed for period of time. Becoming unemployed is a serious emotional blow. This is not only because of the loss of income. This means a reduction in the psychological and emotional flow due to lack of activity, security, self-esteem, social interaction and personal development.
   Work meets a multitude of psychological and emotional needs. This is why losing it almost always translates to a traumatic loss. The financial crisis that follows may trigger fatigue and weakness, mood fluctuation, insomnia and loss of memory. The effects of financial crises are comparable to those caused by adverse events such as divorce or the death of a loved one. The affected person may also go through anger, frustration and hopelessness.
   Anyone can go through the misfortune of losing their job. This requires a great deal of resilience if one is not to collapse psychologically and end up in material and emotional bankruptcy. One has to be realistic in assessing their situation to avoid blame for having lost the job. It is important to reduce your expenses and be in control so as to adjust to reduced income. Adopt order and avoid disorganisation. It is also advisable to seek support before you experience any depressive symptoms. Do not fail to engage in some pass time leisure activities you enjoy, with other people. Isolation will lead to depression. Finally, flee from noxious substances like alcohol and other drugs.
   Sometimes, a financial crisis may occur not due to losing one’s job but because of a significant unexpected expense. For instance, a costly car repair, an unexpected medical expense or an expensive home appliance replacement. A safe way to face this type of crisis is to open a bank account for emergencies.

Read the excerpt below and answer the questions that follow
Krogstad: Are you sure of that?
Mrs.Linde: Quite sure, but-
Krogstad: (with a searching look at her) Is that what it all means?-that you want to save your friend at any cost? Tell me frankly .Is
that it?
MrsLinde: Nils, a woman who has once sold herself for another’s sake doesn’t do it a second time.
Krogstad: I will ask for my letter back.
Mrslinde: No, no.
Krogstad: Yes, of course .I will wait here until Helmer comes; I will tell him he must give me my letter back-that it only concerns
my dismissal-that he is not to read it-
Mrs.Linde: No Nils, you must not recall your letter.
Krogstad: But, tell me wasn’t it for that purpose that you asked me to meet you here?
Mrs Linde: In my first moment of fright it was .But twenty-four hours have elapsed since then, and in that time I have witnessed incredible things in this house. Helmer must know all about it. This unhappy secret must be disclosed; they must have a complete understanding between them which is impossible with all this concealment and falsehood going on.
Krogstad: Very well, if you take the responsibility. But there is one thing I can do in any case and I shall do it once.
Mrs Linde: (listening) You must be quick and go! The dance is over; we are not safe a moment longer.
Krogstad: I will wait for you below.
Mrs Linde: Yes, do. You must see me back to my door-
Krogstad: I have never had such an amazing piece of good fortune in my life!

I know what the caged bird feels, Alas!

2. EXCERPT (25MKS)
   
   1. Before the extract, Krogstad asks Christine if she still to have him back after what he has done. Christine tells him she understands that it was despair that made him do that. He regrets that he cannot undo what he has done. Mrs Linde tells him that the letter is still in the letterbox. (4marks)
   2. He does not want Nora’s husband to know the secret of forgery that she has kept from him for many years. He has reunited with Christine and is very happy. He does not want to ruin the Helmers’ marriage who are friends to Christine. (3marks)
   3. She once sacrificed her love for the sake of her bedridden mother and two young brothers. By saying that, it means she cannot be doing it the second time for another person because that experience was enough. (3marks)
   4. Selfless: “she sacrificed for another person, her mother and brothers. She says“ a woman who has once sold herself for another’s sake doesn’t do it a second time. (2 marks)
   5. It is surprising that Krogstad can change his mind about revenging against the Helmers. He was much determined to have his own way with the man his change and readiness to withdraw the letter catches the readers by surprise (2marks)
   6. Krogstad writes Nora another letter that sets free Nora and her husband. He also returns the bond had all the evidence of forgery. Mr. Helmer is very happy now that he is saved and tells Nora he has forgiven her. However, this comes when it is too late for he had already condemned her for her actions. Nora decides leave him and the children. (4 marks)

   1. The tribulations of a caged bird. The refrain, ‘I know’ is used emphatically to identify with suffering. The bird longs for freedom away from the cago.

      The curtained freedom of movement the caged bird subjectedto.
      Stanza 3
      The desperation of the caged bird which makes it beats its bars, get bruised yet keep singing.
