      • God portrayed in the Old Testament is the same God in the New Testament.
      • The nature of God is revealed in the Old Testament and the same nature is revealed in the New Testament.
      • The salvation history is talked about in both testaments.
      • Some promises made by God in the Old Testament is fulfilled in the new testament
      • God’s judgment of sin leads to punishment in both.
      • Covenants are sealed by blood in both testaments. Old testament blood from animals and blood of Jesus in the new testament
      • Covenant relationship is portrayed in both testaments

      • The bible is a main source book for Christians preaching/sermons
      • The bible is used when composing songs/singing
      • It is used in production of Christian movies , videos ,radio programmes ,plays etc
      • It is used to organize bible studies/ teaching Sunday and Sabbath schools/ strengthens ones faith.
      • Verses from the bible are used for imprints /posters, cloths etc
      • The bible is used in the teaching of Christian religious education.
      • The bible is used in writing of doctrines for different denominations.
      • It is used to offer guidance and counseling.
      • The bible is used in religious ceremonies e.g. wedding/funerals/baptism
      • Mostly used in churches during prayer sessions
      • Some Christians are involved in the bible translation process.

    1. Describe how the Israelites broke the covenant they had made with God while at Mount Sinai
      (Exodus 32:1-30) (8mks)
      • Moses had gone up the mountain to collect the written ten commandments
      • He stayed for a long time / people became impatient
      • They asked Aaron to make them a god they could worship
      • Aaron asked them to bring their jewellery/ used jewellery to make them a god
      • The people worshipped the calf
      • God was angry/ wanted to destroy the Israelites
      • Moses pleaded with God not to destroy them
      • Moses came down and found the people worshipping the calf
      • He became angry and threw the tablets and they broke
      • Moses took the calf, smelted it and mixed it with water
      • Forced people to drink the mixture
      • He asked those who had not sinned to kill those that had sinned
      • Around 3000 people were killed

      • Amos was a farmer tending sycamore tree/shepherded.
      • He became from a village called Tekoa in Judah.
      • He became a prophet during the reign of King Uzziah and Jeroboam II.
      • God called him in a vision.
      • He felt a strong compulsion to prophesy.
      • He responded to God’s call in faith/obedience.                6X1=6
    2. Outline teachings of prophet Amos on social Justice and responsibility (8mks)
      • The righteous could be sold for silver and the needy for pair of shoes.
      • The rich women led luxurious lives and were unkind to the poor.
      • The rich people took an excess share of the harvest from the farmer
      • The ruler lives luxurious lives in good houses as the poor suffered, thus God would send them into exile.
      • The rulers were arrogant, trusted in material things, drunk wine when the poor had nothing to eat.
      • The judges were corrupt and took bribes from the rich.
      • The wealthy merchants cheated the poor by using false scales/selling refuse.
      • The Israelites indulged wine drinking and forced even those not supposed to drink.
      • Those who spoke the truth were hated.
      • Prophet Amos advised people to seek good and avoid evil.
      • He advised against the use of garments taken in pledge.
      • Israelites indulged in sexual immorality that profaned the name of the Lord.

      • To preserve the idolatry of the Jews as people of God.

      • To purify the temple which had been defiled by keeping a foreign
      • To restore the tithing system that had been forgotten for the upkeep of the temple.
      • To ensure that the Sabbath day was free from business activities.
      • In order to cleanse the Jews who had intermarried with the foreigners/exposed to idolatry.

      • It enables one to gain power over temptation/strengthens faith.
      • It expresses one’s obedience/humility before God.
      • One is able to give thanks to God for the many blessings.
      • So as to ask for forgiveness for the wrongs done.
      • So as to ask for God’s protection/care in all that one does.
      • One is able to intercede for others.
      • In order to show/acknowledge God as the provider of everything.
      • So as to praise/glorify/exalt God.
      • To seek for guidance/direction from God.
      • One is able to communicate with God.

    1. Traditional African understanding of spirts.
      • Spirits are invisible /do not have a physical form
      • Spirits are more powerful than human beings
      • They are believed to be residing in caves/rives/ trees /rocks
      • Spirits can acquire physical forms/appear to human beings inform of birds /animals
      • Spirits have the ability to enter human beings and through them to convey messages/reveal certain truths
      • Spirits act as mediators between God and human beings
      • Spirits change according to circumstances /they can bring either harm or good to people.

    2. Ways through which a marriage partner is chosen in traditional African communities.
      • A relative/mediator/identifies a girl from a family and suggested to the of the family of the young man.
      • Parents make the decision for children when still young.
      • Parents of the boy visits the parents of a girl to ask for her hand in marriage.
      • The young people could court and choose who to marry
      • The first wife chooses a girl for her husband.
      • The young man and his age-mates waylay a girl and take her away for marriage.
      • Bride-price could be paid to a family well in advance
      • A young girl can be given as gift to another family
      • Some exchange the girls from the two families.
      • One could inherit a brother’s wife
      • A young girl could be given a way of settling a dispute/replace one who had died/setting debts.

    3. Changes taking place on property ownership in traditional African communities
      • women/children can now own property
      • wealth is no longer determined by the number of wives/children.
      • The introduction of money economy had reduced the value attached to land
      • The roles of elders in sharing of property had been eroded.
      • Land is individually owned through the issuance of title deeds.
      • People write wills to share /decide who should inherit their property.
      • Property can be owned outside one’s ancestral home
      • Land can now be sold/auctioned.            7 x 1 = 7 mks
