MARKING SCHEME
- Define the following terms
- Geography (1mk)
- scientific study of the description of earth as the home of mankind
- Environment (1mk)
- environment refers to all external conditions that surrounds an organism and which influences its behavior / activities
- Geography (1mk)
- Differentiate between physical geography and human geography (2mks)
- Physical geography is the branch of geography that deals with natural natural environment while human geography is the study of people and their activities on earth surface
- Explain relationship between Geography and the following disciplines
- Mathematics (2mks)
- Geography uses mathematical principles and formular during the following a)calculation of time within longitudes
- calculation of area on maps
- History (2mks)
- Geography attempts to explain how historical events affect current human activities on the earth, historians are geographical tools such as maps to show migration of people in the past
- Mathematics (2mks)
- What is the importance of studying Geography (5mks)
- as a career subject geography provided firm foundation for advanced career such as aviation
- learners acquire skills in practical geography
- learners are able to appreciate nature through field work and domestic tourism
- geography creates international awareness by studying other religions of other world
- helps learners understand land forms and land forming processes and how they influence human activities
- What is solar system (2mks)
- Is a group of heavenly bodies comprising of sun, planets and other small heavenly bodies orbiting round the sun
- State the weakness of the passing star theory (5mks)
- theory fails to explain the origin of the sun and the star
- chances of another star approaching the sun are minimal
- effect of the star would have reduced by new if it sets the planets in motion
- the sun could have been broken up by gravitational force of the sun
- high temperature materials drawn from the sun or the star would have dispersed rather than condense
- Give three main layers that form the earth (3mks)
- the crust
- the mantle
- the core
- Explain two reasons why the interior of the earth is still very hot (4mks)
- Weight of overlying materials on the crust exerts a lot of pressure towards the centre of the earth which generates a lot of heat
- breakdown of radioactive elements especially in the mantle region releases a lot of energy which is trapped in the interior
- during the formation of the earth, outer parts cooled faster than the inner part
- State three effects of the movement of earth on its axis (3mks)
- occurrence of day and night
- defection of winds and ocean currents
- rising and falling of tides
- time differences within longitudes
- variations of atmospheric pressure
