Once upon a time, some girls went for a dancing competition in a distant village. There were many young men there but one young man was outstanding. He was very handsome and danced very well.
At the end of the dance, the young man rose to go home. Several girls followed him. Suddenly, one girl saw a mouth open at the back of his head and catch an insect. She was frightened and decided to go back home.after some time, another girl saw the same thing happen. She, too, turned and went back home. This went on until only one girl called Nyokabi remained. By now it was almost daylight. Soon they came to a big river.
‘Wait for me here while I go to the bush,’ the young man said. When the young man came back, he had turned himself into a huge orge. Nyokabi could not run away because her legs were weak with fear. The orge told had a long tail and one bid eye on the forehead.
‘Now I will take you home and eat you,’ the orge told Nyokabi as he carried her in one hand across the river to his house.
The ogre locked in his house and went to call other ogres for a feast. In the meantime, the other girls had got home and told Nyokabi’s family what had happended. Her elder brother, Matheri, took a spear and after getting diections from the girls went to rescue his sister.
