MARKING SCHEME

  1. .Give importance of studying geography (5mks)
    • as a career subject, geography provides firm foundation for advanced careers such as aviation
    • learners understand land forms and land forming process and how they influence human activities
    • knowledge on weather and climate enables learners to understand why people live in certain region and grow certain crops
    • Geography creates international awareness by studying other religions of other world
    • learners acquire skills in practical geography
    • learners are able to appreciate nature through field work and domestic tourism
  2. .Name branches under physical Geography (5mks)
    • geology
    • geomorphology
    • meteorology
    • biogeography
    • mathematical geography
  3. .List five heavenly bodies that comprises of the solar system (5mks)
    • sun
    • planets
    • natural satellite
    • asteroids
    • comets
  4. Define the following terms
    1. Natural satellite (1mk)
      • it’s a heavenly body that orbits round the planet
    2. Asteroid (1mk)
      • are small planet like bodies mainly between mars and Jupiter that orbits round the sun
    3. Meteor (1mk)
      • it’s a streak of light seen in the sky at night when a meteoroid burns
  5. .Describe the passing star theory (5mks)
    • According to Jears and Jeffry’s, the sun existed earlier than the planets. The big star with the greater gravitationa lpull than that of sun passed near the sun. the big star attracted large quantities of hot gas than the sun. materials split into portions as they cooled and condensed. During the process of cooling the heavy materials collected at the centre to form the core. Less heavy materials surrounded the core to form the mantle while lightest material formed the outer covering called crust. The smaller materials cooled to form smaller heavenly heavenly bodies such as asteroids, natural satellites and meteoroids. The planets were set up the sun’s and stars gravity.
  6. .Name the two layers of discontinuity of interior of the earth (2mks)
    • mohorovic
    • gutengerg
  7. Name the forces responsible for the shape of the earth (3mks)
    • Centrigugal force
    • centripetal force
    • force of gravity
  8. Outline five proofs that the earth is spherical (5mks)
    • Satellite photographs of the earth taken from space clearly shows that the earth is spherical
    • it is possible to circumnavigate the earth if on can move along a straight point but from opposite direction
    • When a ship from deep seas approaching the shore an observer first see smoke then mist and then the whole ship
    • the sun is first seen in the regions to the east and later those to the west. If the earth was flat then all places would
    • receive sunshine at the same time
    • the earth’s horizon appears curved when observed using telescopes to be spherical.
    • other planets are spherical and planet earth being one of them is spherical
  9. Name the major latitudes of the world (5mks)
    1. tropic of cancer 23 ½°N
    2. Equator 0°
    3. tropic of capricon 23 ½°S
    4. Artic circle 66 ½°N
    5. antactic circle 66 ½°S
    6. North pole 90°N
    7. South pole 90°S
  10. Differentiate between rotation and revolution of the earth (2mks)
    • rotation is spinning of earth on its own axis while revolution is the movement of the earth round the sun
  11. State five effects of the movement of earth on its axis (5mks)
    • occurrence of the day and night
    • deflection of the winds and ocean currents
    • rising and falling of tides
    • time differences within longitude
    • variations of atmospheric pressure
  12. If local time at Tekoa 40°W is 2:00pm, calculate local time at kapkiam 70°W (3mks)
    Difference in degrees 70°W – 40°W = 30°
    Difference in minutes 1° = 4mins
    30° = ? mins
Kapkiam is to the west at Tekoa thus behind in time by 2hrs
    3:00pm – 2hrs = 1:00pm
  13. If local time at Kansas 80°E is 6.00am, determine the longitude of Timbuktu if its local time is 11:40am (5mks)
    11:40am – 6.00am = 5hrs
    1hr = 60mins
    5hrs = ? mins
           = 300+40 = 340mins but 4 mins = 1°
                                                340mins =?
    80° + 85° =  165°E
  14. State two characteristics of summer solstice (2mks)
    • plenty of sunshine
    • high temperature is experienced at the propics
    • durations of the day increase polewards from tropics
  15. Study the diagram below and answer the questions that follow.
           GeoF1ET12023Q15
    1. Name parts marked P,Q,R (3mks)
      • P - Core
      • Q - Atmosphere
      • R - Mohorovicic discontinuity
    2. Give dominant minerals in regions marked T (2mks)
  16. Identify elements of weather that can be observed in a school weather station(3mks)
    • Temperature
    • humidity
    • Precipitation
    • Air pressure
    • Wind
    • Sunshine
    • Cloud cover
  17. Name any two major forms of precipitation (2mks)
    • Dew; frost; snow; rainfall ; mist; fog
  18. With an aid of a diagram, differentiate between land breeze and sea breeze (5mks)
    • Land breeze is the movement of cool air from land to the sea during night time while sea breeze is the movement of cool air from the sea to the land during the day.
