MARKING SCHEME

  1.
    1. Name the instruments used to measure the following elements of weather.
      1. Air pressure (1 mk) - barometer
      2. Duration of sunshine (1 mk)
    2. Briefly explain how relative humidity is calculated. (2 mks) - Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder
  2.
    1. Give two examples of extrusive igneous rocks. (2 mks)
pumice, obsidian, andesite, rhyolite, and basalt.
    2. Name the type of changes undergone by rocks in metamorphism. (2 mks)
When rocks are buried deeply they are subjected to a great deal of pressure and heat. When that happens the minerals reorganize themselves to become different kinds of rocks. This is how we some of the gemstones like diamonds and garnets. If deep enough the rocks melt and start from scratch by recrystallizing. If they cool slow the crystals can grow very big. The type of crystals will depend on what the original rock was
Common metamorphic rocks include phyllite, schist, gneiss, quartzite and marble.
  3.
    1. Identify the factors which influence folding. (2 mks)
The nature of the rocks whether elastic or resistant to force.
The amount of force exerted on the rocks./ Strength or intensity of the compressional force.
      Temperature within rocks/high
    2. Apart from fold mountains, name two features resulting from folding. (2 mks)
      Cuestas.
      Escarpments.
      Intermountain basins/ plateaus.
  4.
    1. Mention two modern methods of showing direction. (2 mks)
the use of the compass direction
Use of magnetic compass which has a bearing
      maps
    2. What is magnetic variation? (1 mk)
In navigation, at a given place and time, the horizontal angle between the true north and magnetic north measured east or west according to whether magnetic north lies east or west of true north.
    3. Other than the Equator, name three other important latitudes. (3 mks)
      Tropic of Cancer (Latitude 23.5oN)
      Tropic of Capricorn (Latitude 23.5oS)
      Arctic Circle (Latitude 66.5oN).
      Antarctic Circle (Latitude 66.5oS).
