    • The bristles should be firmly fixed
    • The bristles should be soft so as not to damage the fabric.
    • The handles should be comfortable to use.
  3. Outline three point to consider when choosing basins and bucket. (3mks)
    • They should be light in weight.
    • They should be rust proof
    • They should be the correct size for the cleaning being done.
    • They should be smooth.
    • Their colour and design should be attractive. 
  4. State three causes of poor sanitation. (3mks)
    • Poor personal hygiene.
    • Water pollution due to domestic and industrial sewage leaking into water supply.
    • Improper refuse disposal, this litters the environment.

    • Congestion; overlapping causes pressure on public facilities such as sewage system.

    • They should suit the figure type.
    • They should be appropriate for the occasion.

    • They should be appropriate for the weather.
    • They should suit the wearers complexion.
    • They should be fashionable.
    • They should suit ones preference.
  7. List down three ways of purifying water. (3mks)
    • Sedimentation
    • Boiling
    • Filtration
    • Chrorination.
  8. Identify five substances added to detergent during manufacture and give the purpose of each. (10mks)
    • Blue- counteract the yellowing of white and brighten them.
    • Dye - improve appearance and give detergent their characteristics colour.
    • Antiseptic-ingredients improve the germicidal properties of some detergent.
    • Bleaches - to make detergents remove stains and whiten some clothes.
    • Builders - to improve the cleaning power of soap.
  9. State three principles of stain removal. (5mks)
    • If the stain is acidic an alkali will remove it.
    • If the stain is alkaline an acid will remove it.
    • Alcohol will remove alcohol based stains.
    • Grease stains can be removed using detergent or solvent.
    • For stains on carpets and flour materials follow the manufacture instructions.
  10. State two ways of finishing clothes. (2mks)
    • Pressing the bulky/heavy garments
    • Ironing the light garments.
  11. Identify three rules for darning. (3mks)
    • Use a darning needle suitable for the fabric being darned.
    • Use a suitable yarn of the same colour and fibre content as the article being repaired.
    • Darn on the wrong side (WS) of the article.
    • Avoid stretching or pulling the garment while working.
    • At the end of each darning line, loops of thread should be left hanging to allow room for shrinkage.
  12. State the two common methods of washing clothes. (2mks)
    • Friction
    • Kneading and squeezing
  13. Give two classifications of detergents. (2mks)
    • Soap detergent these are made from animal fats and vegetables.
    • Soapless detergent, these are made from synthetic materials.
  14. Give five reasons for cooking food. (5mks)
    • To kill germs
    • To improve on its nutritive value.
    • To improve on its flavor
    • To make it palatable.
    • To preserve it
    • To improve on its appearance.
    • To make it soft and easy to digest.

SECTION B

ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS.

  1. Your aunt is coming to visit you for a weekend. Describe how you would:
    1. Launder a pair of white cotton bed sheets for the bed she will use. (10mks)
      • Shake to remove loose dirt.
      • Soak 1⁄2 in cold 1⁄2 plain water to soften dirt.
      • Wash% in hot 1⁄2 soapy water using friction /
        Method.
      • Rinse in hot½water severally and finally in cold ½ water.
      • Soak ½ for 15min in cold water to which come laundry bleach has been added to whiten it1⁄2.
      • Rinse severally in cold ½water to remove the bleach and freshen the fabric.
      • Wring all the water and dry 1⁄2 it on clothes line 1⁄2 in the sun ½
      • Iron it with a hot 1⁄2 iron to remove crease.
      • Air 1⁄2 fold1⁄2 and stir appropriately
    2. Clean your styling comb for her to use. (5mks)
      • Remove any fluff from the comb using a brush.
      • Soak the comb in warm soapy water to emulsify the grease.
      • Clean it thoroughly%1⁄2 using a soft brush until all the dirt is removed.
      • Rinse in warm water flicking it to remove all the dirt.
      • Rinse finally in cold to which some disinfectant has been added to freshen the comb and sterilize it.½
      • Flick it to remove excess water and dry in an airy place.½
      • Buff it with a dry cloth ½.
      • Store appropriately. 1⁄2
    3. Remove chewing gum stain from her skirt.(5mks)
      • Cleaning chewing germ
      • Harden using ice
      • Scarpe it from the skirt using a blunt stick.
      • Wash normally according to the fabric. (5mks)
