      • He appeared to them to reassure them that they were not alone.
      • He gave them the 10 commandment s to guide them.
      • He reminded them that it was him who brought them from Egypt.
      • He entered into a covenant relationship with them /He assured them that he will be there God and they will be his people.
      • He promised to be with them always.
      • Continued to provide for their needs.
      • He renewed the covenant after they broke it.
      • He replaced the 10 commandments after Moses broke the first tablet.
    2. Describe the covenant making process between God and Abraham as indicated in Genesis 15: 1-19 (8mks)
      • Abraham had a vision.
      • God assured him not to fear.
      • Abraham doubted /was disturbed since he was childless.
      • God reassured him and promised that his descendants will be as many as the stars in the sky.
      • God entered into a covenant with him.
      • He was to bring a heifer, she –goat, a ram, all three years old, and a turtle dove, and a young pigeon.
      • He was to cut the animals into two and lay them against each other except for birds.
      • When birds of air come down upon the carcasses, Abraham drove them away.
      • He (Abraham) fell into a deep sleep and great darkness fell upon him.
      • God appeared in form of smoking firepot and flaming torch/passed between the pieces.
      • God sealed the covenant by promising Abraham and his descendants land.
    3. What are the features of marriage that qualifies it to a covenant? (5mks)
      • They were two parties involved, eg. The bride and the groom and their families.
      • Vow and promises are made before a priest.
      • There are witnesses – church members, family members, parents and friends.
      • There is a ceremony.
      • Exchange of ring acts as a sign or symbol of unity.
      • Marriage certificate acts as a seal that binds the marriage / in Africa Traditional Society bride price seals the marriage.

      • He anointed people, eg King Saul and David.
      • He judged cases among the people; hence acted as a judge with the direction of the Lord.
      • He taught people God’s ways, ie. Reminded people the covenant way of life.
      • He condemned social injustices and corruption in Israel / He condemned the exploitation of the poor and the week.
      • He corrected the Kings of his times, eg Saul/ He brought to the King’s attention their mistakes.
      • He preached the worship of one God and condemned idolatry in Israel.
      • Samuel helped in offering sacrifices to God.
      • He led the Israelites to war against their enemies before he anointed Kings.
      • He took care of the tabernacle and the covenant box of the Lord.
      • He performed priestly duties in the house of the Lord, eg, here placed Eli the priest.
    2. Give six factors which contribute to schism between Judah and Israel. (6mks)
      • Solomon introduced exploitation, high taxation and forced labor, which led to hatred to his house.
      • Solomon did not obey the advice of his father – David – to obey God.
      • Rehoboam promised to rule Israel more harshly than his father. This made 10 tribes of Israel to rebel against him leading to the division.
      • It was a curse from God on Solomon’s house after breaking the covenant way of life/ killed Adonija.
      • Solomon had neglected the Northern part of Israel during his reign, which increased tension between the two regions/exempted Sothern’s form taxation.
      • The availability of Jeroboam led to the division of the Kingdom, as the people had an alternative leader.
      • Solomon married many foreign wives who brought with them idols.
    3. List the qualities of Prophet Elijah that a Christian leader should posses in Kenya today. (7mks)

    1. Give seven similarities between the traditional Africa prophets and the Old Testament Prophets. (7mks)
      • In both cases prophets had some spiritual powers.
      • They had divine inspiration in both cases.
      • They both acted as mediator between God and the people.
      • In both cases they presided over religious functions.
      • They were both prophets and prophetesses in both cases.
      • In both cases prophets were charismatic.
      • They acted as political conscience of the society.
      • In both cases the received revelation through/ vision /dreams.
    2. Explain the hypocritical religious practices of the Israelites during the time of Prophet Amos. (8mks)
      • Insincere worship - The Israelite engaged in a lot of religious rites at the temple of Bethel, which were done in accordance with the covenant way of life, but the people who took parts were unjust, corrupt and always oppressed the poor.
      • Empty sacrifices - The Israelites used to bring sacrifices and tithes to Bethel and Gilgal, which were referred to as empty because God was interested in sincere worship.
      • Syncretism – The Israelites worshipped Yahweh alongside other gods, who had been introduced to them by foreigners.
      • Idolatry – The Israelites worshipped idol gods of the Canaanites and other pagan gods.
      • Worshippers went to holy places to satisfy their own desires other than pleasing God.
      • Worshippers were making offering as a show off and not out of love for God.
      • They stole from the poor and offered to God.
    3. Identify five attributes of God that Christians can learn from Prophet Amos. (5mks)
      • God is merciful
      • He is universal to all nations.
      • He hates sins.
      • He is just.
      • He is faithful.
      • He is forgiving.
      • He is the creator of everything.

    1. Explain Jeremiah’s prophecy about the new covenant Jeremiah 23:5-6; 30-33 (7mks)
      • God’s law would be written in people’s hearts.
      • There would be personal knowledge of God.
      • There would be spontaneous forgiveness of sins.
      • Each individual would be responsible for his /her sins.
      • The new covenant would bring into being a new community/ Yahweh people.
      • Yahweh would bring about a change of human nature by giving Israel a new heart /new will.
      • The new covenant was similar to the old in the sense that God took the initiative to establish the covenant in both cases.
      • The restored community would be ruled by a righteous king raised from the house of David.

      • They were both prayerful.

      • They were both compassionate /loved/ cared for the people.

      • They should internalize the law of God /laws of God should be in their hearts.
      • They should have personal relationship with God/ Know God personally.
      • There is individual responsibility /punishment when one sins.
      • There is forgiveness of sin and reconciliation, if one sins.
      • Those who repent their sins have a new beginning.
      • Christians have an everlasting relationship with God.
      • They need to have faith in God.
      • They should obey and practice the law of God.
      • They learn that the new covenant is fulfilled in the coming of Jesus Christ.

      • It helps in remembrance of dead parents to maintain one’s lineage.
      • It helps as a uniting link in life, past, present and future.
      • There is re - incarnation and re-birth of the dead through naming after the ancestors.
      • There is increase in human population, through bearing of children.
      • Through marriage labour forced was provided.
      • It gives status to an individual because after marriage one is seen as an adult.
      • Marriage enables one to understand fully the meaning of life.
      • It helps to develop acceptable qualities and good character.

    2. Give five changes that have taken place in property ownership in traditional African community. (5mks)
      • Ownership of property was communal, but today it is individual.
      • Property was owned by men, but today it is owned by men, women and children.
      • One could not own property before initiation but today they own at a tender age.
      • Traditionally, property was in the form of Land and livestock, women and children but today it is in form of money buildings, vehicles.
      • Traditionally the property was confined to the ancestral land but today you can own property anywhere.
    3. What are the causes of divorce in the society today? (7mks)
      • Infidelity/ unfaithfulness.
      • Lack of responsibility/ laziness.
      • Lack of children/ barrenness.
      • Economic hardship /poverty
      • Religious differences.
      • Age difference.
      • Educational differences.
      • Early marriages / unplanned marriages.
      • Government policies on women empowerment.
