    BLOSSOMS OF SAVANNA by H.R OLE kulet.
    Determination is the key to overcome obstacles in life. Substantiate this statement by writing an essay using illustrations from the novel.
  1. THE OPTIONAL SET TEXT.
    Answer any one of the following THREE questions

    1. THE SHORT STORY
      MEMORIES WE LOST AND OTHER STORIES.
      In life’s confinement, it is positive thinking and hope that creates comfort and ultimate success.
      Write an essay to show the validity of the statement. Base your argument on the short story; “Umbrella man”.

      OR

    2. DRAMA
      David Mulwa, INHERITANCE
      When you have conflict it means there are truths that have to be addressed on each side of the conflict. “Drawing your illustrations from the play INHERITANCE, write an essay to show validity of this statement. 

      OR

    3. THE NOVEL; THE PEARL.
      Appearances can be deceptive.
      Using examples from the novel, write an essay in support of this statement.


MARKING SCHEME

  1. Imaginative composition(20mks)
    This question is intended to test the candidate’s ability to communicate in writing. Communication is established at different levels of intelligibility, correctness, accuracy, fluency, pleasantness and originality within the constraints set by each question. It is the linguistic competence shown by the candidates that should carry most marks. Examiners should not hesitate to use the full range of marks for each essay. It is important to determine first how each essay communicates and in which category A,B,C or D fits

    D CLASS(01-05)
    The candidate does not communicate at all or his language ability is so minimal that the examiner practically has to guess what the candidate wants to say. The candidate fails to fit the English words he knows into meaningful sentences. The subject is glanced at or distorted. Practically no valid punctuation. All kinds of errors “Broken English”

    D CLASS (01-02)
    Chaotic, little meaning whatsoever. Question paper or some words from it simply copied. 

    D(03)
    Flow of thought almost impossible to follow. The errors are continuous.

    D+(04-05)
    Although the English is often broken and the essay is full of errors of all types we can at least guess what the candidate wants to say.

    C CLASS(06-10)
    The candidate communicates understandably but only more or less clearly. He is not confident with his language. The subject is often undeveloped. Unnecessary repetitions are frequent. The arrangement is weak and the flow jerky. There is no economy of language; mother tongue influence is felt. Watch for repetition for emphasis.

    C(06-07)
    The candidate obviously finds it difficult to communicate his ideas. He is seriously hampered by his very limited knowledge of structure and vocabulary. This results in many gross errors of agreement and sentence construction 

    C 08
    The candidate communicates but not with consistent clarity. His linguistic ability being very limited, he cannot avoid frequent errors in sentence structures. There is little variety or originality. Very bookish English links are weak, incorrect, repeated at times.

    C+(09-10)
    The candidate communicates clearly but in a flat and uncertain manner. Simple concept sentence forms are often strained. There may be an overuse of clichés, unsuitable idioms, proverbs are misquoted or misinterpreted. The flow is still jerky. There are some errors of agreement, tenses and spelling.

    B CLASS(11-15)
    This class is characterized by greater fluency and ease of expression. The candidate demonstrates that he can use English as a normal way of expressing himself. Sentences are varied and usually well constructed. Some candidates become ambitious and even overambitious. There may be items of merit of one word or one expression type. Many essays in this category may be just be clean and unassuming but they still show that the candidate is at ease with the language. There may be a tendency to under mark such essays. Give credit for tone.

    B (11-12)
    The candidate communicates fairly and with some fluency. There may be little variety in sentence structure. Gross errors are still found occasionally but this must not be over punished by the examiner. 

    B 13
    The sentences are varied but rather simple and straightforward. The candidate does not strain himself in an effort to impress. There is a fair range of vocabulary and idiom. Natural and effortless. Some items of merit, economy of language.

    B+(14-15)
    The candidate communicates his ideas pleasantly and without strain. There are errors and slips. Tenses, spelling and punctuation are quite good. A number of items of merit of the “whole sentence “or the “whole expression “type. Merit ticks phrasal verbs, inversions, idioms etc variety of sentence, correct vocabulary. 

    ACLASS (16-20)
    The candidate communicates not only fluently but attractively, with originality and efficiency. He has the ability to make us share his deep feelings, emotions, enthusiasm. He expresses himself freely and without any visible constraint. The script gives evidence of maturity, good planning and often humor. Many items of merit which indicate that the candidate has complete command of the language. There is no strain, just pleasantness, clever arrangement, felicity of expression.

    A(16-17)
    The candidate shows competence and fluency in using the language. He may lack imagination or originality which usually provides the “spark” in such essays. Vocabulary, idioms, sentence structure, links variety are impressive. Gross errors are very rare. 

    A18
    Positive ability. A few errors that are felt to the slips. The story or argument has a definite impact. No grammar-problem. Variety of structures. A definite spark. Many margin ticks.

    A+(19-20)
    The candidate communicates not only information and meaning, but also and especially the candidate’s whole self, his feelings, tastes, points of view, youth, culture. This ability communicate his deep self may express itself in many ways; wide range of effective vocabulary, original approach, vivid and sustained account in the case of a narrative, well developed and ordered argument in the case of a debate or discussion. Errors and slips should not deprive the candidate of the full marks he deserves. A very definite spark.

  2. Blossoms of the savannah
    Determination is the key to overcome obstacles in life.
    1. Resian –she is determined to go to the university to achieve this, she goes against Nasilian culture that dictate how women should live. She also fights Olarinkoi when he attempts to rape her. She confronts her father OleKaelo when he intends to marry her off to Oloisoduri. Determination enables her to reachat Minik’s ranch and Minik gives her an opportunity to join the university.
    2. Minik –she is determined to fight against the outdated cultural practices of the people of Nasila, she is educated which is not a norm for a girl child in Nasila She owns a ranch She is against the barbaric F.G.M and early marriages. She earns the hatred of the elders in Nasila they referto her as a wasp. Ole Musanka even curses her during the welcoming ceremony of kaelo. Minik with her determination is able to save over 500 girls and offers them a chance to go to school.
    3. Nabaru this is the nurse who is entrusted to takecare of Resian at Olarinkoi’s mother’s place. She is determined to save Resian from Olarinkoi and his mother who had planned to circumcise her and marry her off to her son.she organizes for transport to come fetch Resian from Olarinkoi’s place. Nabarusucceds at saving Resian to go to the ranch of Minik and helps her escape the evil plans of Olarinkoi and his mother.
    4. Taiyo –she is determined to go to Mombasa for a music extravaganza and therefore asks her father permission, who is harsh and strict. She overcomes fear and approaches her father which is hard having been raised at Kaelo’s family.

  3. MEMORIES WE LOST
    In life’s confinement, it is positive thinking and hope that creates comfort and ultimate success.

    Introduction
    In the story umbrella man it is evident that optimism is what one needs to endure toughest of times and see one through to success as demonstrated by the inmate number 7.
    • Number 7 is given the privilege of going out of the gates because of his obedience and calmness, a position that other inmates do not enjoy.(pg46)
    • He ensures that he is psychologically at peace with himself and when there is a treat of loneliness in the night, he recreates amity with a child in his dreams. He keeps on consoling the child until it becomes happy. (pg 48,50)
    • He turns a rejected umbrella and makes it his soul mate and it gives him hope to surge on and live in permanent expectation of good tidings. It becomes his companion and he psychologically thrives in its companionship, the symbolic expectation of rains that eventually comes with positivity. (pg 48)
    • The rain is important to the umbrella man. Rain signifies life and with it abundance and constant hope of a brighter future and he urges the barber to see it his way. And as if to confirm his belief, it rains the very day he is released. (pg 46,48,50)
    • The puny little fellow is symptomatic of the yearning for freedom.(pg 49,50)
      Conclusion
      In conclusion, Number 7 keeps to the faith as he lives it and at the end, the hope is realized when he is released from both physical and psychological bondage.

      QUESTION 3B   DRAMA
      David Mulwa ; INHERITANCE
    • Governor Thorne mistreats and abuses the native black servant. The people finds his leadership humiliating and zealous.
    • There is a conflict between the African and their white masters over land, leadership and resources.
    • They rob the Africans of their valuables and export them to their motherland.
    • King Butula is displeased with apparent inheritance and insists the natives must share what comes from their land.
    • There is interracial conflict. The natives destroy the white people’s property.

      Question 3C; THE PEARL
      The contrast between what is outward and the real appearances\hypocrisy\pretence must come out
    • When Kino gets the pearl of the world, it is glittering. To him, the pearl encapsulates the solution to his poverty. However, the pearl makes him violent and non responsive to advice. In an attempt to protect his precious pearl his son that was the foundation of his hope is killed. He returns miserable and throws the pearl back to the sea.
    • The doctor refuses to treat Kino’s son when he is stung by a scorpion because they did not have money but when he learns that Kino has got the pearl of the world, he proclaims that he is his client and immediately goes to visit him, offers to treat the child and demands to be paid.
    • The priest is a man of God, when he learns that Kino has the pearl, he strives to be part of it by finding how he will benefit from the pearl. He wonders what it is worth around be and whether he had baptized his son or named in church. He tells him that he is named after a great biblical character.
    • The dealers learn that Kino has the pearl and they plan to exploit him. They undervalue the pearl but they hope they will benefit. They itch at the prospect of enriching themselves from the pearl. They organize some semblance of order and pretend that they are independent.
    • The neighbors around him follow him whenever he goes. Kino thinks he has attained a heroic status because he has got the pearl that will change his life. In real sense they want to steal the pearl from him.
