Instructions to candidates

  • This paper consists of three sections A, B and
  • Answer all the questions in section A and B and any two questions from section C.
  • Answers to all questions must be written in the spaces provided in this booklet.

SECTION A (40 marks)
Answer all questions

MARKING SCHEME

Section A

  1. - Cheaper since there are no hospital bills
    - Loved ones are close to family for socialization
    - No restrictions to visiting
    - Can eat anytime the food they like
    - Transport inconveniences are avoided

    -May cause overdependence on the cosmetics.

  1. –Soap lowers the surface tension of water
    -Water penetrates the dirt loosening it
    -It emulsify grease
    -The foam holds the dirt in suspension until rinsed out

  1. -Mother taking in nutritious and adequate fluids for milk production.
    -Eating a well-balanced diet but rich in calcium, energy and protein.
    -Adopt a positive attitude towards breast feeding the baby in a relaxed and free atmosphere.
    -Massage and clean breasts with warm water to stimulate milk production.
    - Avoid stress and stressful situations when feeding the baby.              (1x3=3 marks)             

SECTION B: Compulsory – 20 Marks

  1.  
    1.  
      • Collect cleaning equipment and materials needed to save time (½)
      • Take the measurement (½) of the cardigan to help check on Shrinkage ( ½ ) after washing.
      • Shake the garment (½) to remove loose dirt (½).
      • Prepare warm water and add a detergent (½).
      • Wash using kneading and squeezing (½) method without lifting (½) the garment from the water, so that it does not stretch. (½).
      • Very dirty parts can be washed between the palms of the hand (½) to avoid stretching and losing of shape ( ½ ).
      • Rinse in warm water (½) that has the same temperatures as washing water until all traces of soap and detergent ( ½ ) is removed.
      • Squeeze out water (½) roll on a towel (½) and squeeze to remove excess water (½ ).
      • Dry flat by spreading on a clean towel ( ½ ) or newspaper under a shade ( ½ ) take the measurement again ( ½ ) and compare with the initial measurement to check on shrinkage (½). If it has shrunk, pull it slowly back to shape.
      • Press using a warm iron ( ½ ) by placing a damp cloth on top of the article to avoid a shine ( ½ ) on the garment.
      • Air to ensure (½) complete dryness (½) before folding and storing.
        (½ x20=10 marks)
    2.  
      • Collect cleaning equipment and materials needed to save time (½)
      • Remove laces ( ½ )and wash them in warm soapy water( ½ ).Rinse in clean water and  hang to dry
      • Scrap off any fixed dirt ( ½ ) using a blunt object ( ½ )
      • Wipe the inside using damp piece of cloth ( ½ ) wring out of soapy water ( ½ )
      • Air to dry ( ½ )while stuffed
      • Apply polish using a shoe brush ( ½ )
      • Let them absorb polish ( ½ )
      • Brush shoes with shoes brush (½) then buff with a soft cloth to shine ( ½ )
      • Stuff shoes with papers or soft piece of cloth (½)
      • Return laces (½)
      • Store on a shoe rack (½)                                                 
        (½ x 12=6 marks)           
    3.  
      • Collect cleaning equipment and materials needed to save time (1).
      • Clean the inside and outside (1) using warm soapy water and an abrasive/sponge (1).
      • Rinse thoroughly in warm water (1) until clean.
      • Dry completely with a kitchen cloth or drip – dry on a rack. (1)
      • Store the serving dish appropriately (1)
        (1x4= 4 marks)

SECTION C;  (40 Marks)

  1.  
    1.  
      • Regulate the heat according to the fabric
      • The flex should be well insulated
      • Switch off when not in use
      • Use dry hands when handling the electric iron
      • Allow the iron to cool before storage
      • Disconnect from the main switch when not in use
      • Avoid dropping the iron                                             (1x4=4 marks)             
    2.  
      • Poverty-Due to lack of money
      • Body’s inability to utilize certain nutrients-Genetic inheritance
      • Parasites infestation-worms reduce the amounts of nutrients in the body.
      • Food taboos-Religious or some traditions prohibit eating of certain foods
      • Ignorance –lack of information
      • Natural calamities- like wars, floods etc
      • Corruption- of leaders affects the food distribution
      • Lifestyle-Leads to increased intake of certain nutrients            (2x5= 10 marks)
      • Mechanical means (air)- Air can be introduced by; 
        • Sieving flour into a bowl during which air is trapped in the mixture.
        • Rubbing fat into flour using finger tips.
        • Beating or creaming fat and sugar together with eggs.
        • Whisking eggs and sugar together.
      • Chemical means- Use of baking powder which has bicarbonate of soda, cream of tartar and starch powder as filler.
        When the flour mixture is subjected to heat, the bicarbonate of soda reacts with the cream of tartar to release carbon dioxide and water ,the gas forces its way out through the flour mixture hence raising it.
      • Biological method (Use of yeast)-Yeast produces carbon dioxide in the process of fermentation making the bubbles to expand that raises the dough, while alcohol evaporates giving it a light structure.
      • Physical method (Use of steam)- When the flour mixture containing liquid is baked at a very high temperatures the mixture is raised when the water gives out steam which forces its way through the mixture, raising it.  (3x 2= 6 marks)
  2.  
    1.  
      • Must be sewn on double fabric for support and strength.
      • They must be sufficiently distributed.
      • Should be evenly spaced to avoid gaping.
      • Many are sewn on after the opening has been made and pressed.
      • Must be well aligned so that the opening can lie flat when closed.
      • Buttons should not protrude beyond edge of the opening.    (1x5=5 marks)
    2.  
      • Pulling fabric from the machine.
      • Machining too thick a fabric with a fine needle.
      • Needle not firmly fixed.
      • Pins are left in the work.
      • Needle may be bent so it strikes presser – foot and breaks.
      • Machining close to zip teeth.
      • Use of the wrong presser foot.
        (1x5=5 marks)
    3.  
      • Cut the collar, under collar and interfacing (1) according to the pattern.                
      • Transfer the pattern markings required.(1)
      • Apply the interfacing on the wrong side (½) side of the collar leaving the seam allowance.
      • Place the collar and the under collar (½) together with the RS facing. Match the raw edges, fitting lines and notches.( ½ )
      • Pin and tack (½) along the fitting line, leaving the lower edge (½) where the collar is to be attached to the neck line.
      • Remove pins (½) and machine the sides (½) and the top edge, leaving the lower edge unstitched. ( ½ )
      • Trim and layer (½) the seam allowance.
      • Snip the curved sections (½) of the collar and clip the pointed edge (½)
      • Turn the collar to the RS (½) and knife-edge ( ½ ), then press (½) the collar.
      • Top stitch along the edge (optional) (½) for a neat finish and flatness (½)
         (½x 20=10 marks)
    1. Use of the room
      -Consider whether it is a dining, bed room or kitchen e.g. colour suitable for the bed room would not do for the kitchen.
      -For bedroom, consider cool and peaceful colours e.g. blue and green as they create a relaxing atmosphere.
      Sizes of room
      - Colours have a definite effect on space hence for large rooms use warm colours and for smaller rooms use cool colours, because they recede hence enlarging the room.
      Personal Taste
      - Personal preference will dictate the colours used.
      - Use colours that can be appreciated by others, to avoid frustration and boredom.
      Orientation of the room
      - Consider direction of the natural light in the rooms. Use warm colours in the rooms that are usually cold and not well lit during the day, use cool colours e.g. green and blue in the rooms with plenty of warmth and light.
      Existing decor
      - To create harmony consider colour of existing furniture and soft furnishing, carpet and permanent features.
      - Consider the selection and organization of lines, shapes, colours and textures.
      - Unify the colours and textures of furnishings to harmonise.
      - Choose colours and textures wisely to make a room look well designed.
      Effect of light on colours and surfaces in the home.
      - Select colours which may blend well with the natural light e.g. bright light makes red, yellow and green appear more intense.
      - Light colours makes a room appear large and warm.
      - Dark colours make it appear smaller and cold.
      The effect desired
      - Consider areas that need highlighting and those that need to be camouflaged during decoration and furnishing.

    3. - Baby is born in clean sterilized conditions under the care of trained staff.
      - Complications during childbearing can be detected and the necessary action taken.
      - Having a baby in hospital gives the mother opportunity to rest physically, mentally, whereas at home she would be worrying about housework and other children.
      - Having a baby in hospital gives a mother an opportunity to interact with other mothers.
      - Immunization can be started while the mother is still in hospital.
      - The mother is given some advice on how to feed and bathe the baby and how to take care of herself.
      - Any abnormalities with the baby are discovered early enough and corrective measures taken.    (1x 4=4marks)
