QUESTIONS
A pattern of a girl’s dress is provided. You are advised to study the sketches, the instructions and layout before you begin the test

MATERIALS PROVIDED

  1. Pattern pieces
    1. Dress Front
    2. Dress Back
    3. Front Yoke
    4. Collar
    5. Back neck facing
    6. Front neck facing
    7. Frill
    8. Sleeve 
  2. Plain light weight cotton fabric 65cm and 90cm wide
  3. Sewing thread to match the fabric
  4. One large envelop

THE TEST

Using the materials provided, lay, cut out and make Right half of a girl’s dress to show the following:

  1. Cutting out (18 marks)
  2. Making of the shoulder dart (6 marks)
  3. Attaching the Front yoke to the dress front using overlaid seam. Neaten half of the seam using overcasting stitches(6 marks)
  4. Making of a machine fell / double stitched seam at the shoulder (7 marks)
  5. Joining the side seam and under arm using French seam (12 marks)
  6. Preparation of the facings.(4 marks)
  7. Preparation of the collar and attaching it to the neckline using the facing (13 marks)
  8. Preparation of the frill (3 marks)
  9. Attaching the frill to the lower edge of the dress using a plain seam. Neaten 1/3 of the back seam using loop stitches (7 marks)
  10. Preparation and attaching of the sleeve. Leave the seam untrimmed and unneatened. (10 marks)
  11. Overall presentation.(4 marks)

At the end of the examination firmly sew onto your work, on a single fabric, a label bearing your name and index number. Remove the needles, pins and loose threads from your work. Fold your work and carefully place it in the envelope provided

MARKING SCHEME

    4. Pins and needles ( ½) and unnecessary tacking threads ( ½) removed

  2. CUTTING OUT
    1. All eight pieces cut out (½ x 8)
    2. Smooth cutting (1) of the dress front and to the grain (1)
    3. Smooth cutting (1) of the dress back and to the grain (1)
    4. Sleeve smoothly cut (1) and to the grain (1)
    5. Front yoke smoothly cut (1) and to the grain (1)
    6. Collar smoothly cut (1) and to the grain (1)
    7. Front neck facing smoothly cut (½) and on grain (½)
    8. Back neck facing smoothly cut (½) and on grain (½)
    9. Frill smoothly cut (1) and on fold (1)
  3. DART
    1. Dart worked using straight stitching
    2. Machined tapering to nothing
    3. Ends well reinforced
    4. Correct length and width
    5. Pressed towards CB
    6. Flat on R.S & W.S
  4. OVERLAID SEAM ON YOKE
    (If not overlaid award zero)
    1. Yoke overlaid on the dress
    2. Machine close to the fold ( ½) on the R.S (½)
    3. Straight stitching  (½)
    4. Trimmed to 1cm (½) 
    5. Overcastting stitches used (1)
    6. Evenly spaced (1) and neat (1)
  5. MACHINE FELL SEAM AT THE SHOULDER
    (If not machine fell award zero)
    1. First (1) and second (1) rows straightly stitched 
    2. Correct width of seam 0.6cm
    3. Evenness of the fold
    4. Fell lying towards the back (1) well tacked under (1)
    5. Flat on R.S and W.S
  6. FRENCH SEAM AT THE SIDE SEAM AND UNDERARM SEAM  X2

  7. FACINGS

    3. Free edge correctly edge stitched (½) and even (½)
  8. COLLAR PREPARATION
    1. Correct shape (½)
    2. Correct size (½)
    3. Seam allowance layered ( ½) and snipped (½)
    4. Flat collar (1)
    5. Good knife edge (1)
      ATTACHING
      1. Correctly attached
      2. Correctly positioned
      3. Straight stitchery
      4. Correctly neatened with the facing
      5. Trimmed (½) snipped (½)
      6. Flat collar
      7. Facing lying flat  (1) and under stitched (1)
      8. Facing fixed at the shoulder seam
  9. FRILL PREPARATION
    1. Knife pleats made (if not award zero)
    2. Correct width of pleat
    3. Pleat well pressed (½) towards the side seams (½)
      ATTACHING FRILL USING PLAIN SEAM
      (If not plain seam award zero)
      1. Straight stitchery
      2. Correct tension and size of stitches
      3. Trimmed to 1cm
      4. Loop stitches used (1) neat (1) evenly spaced (1)
      5. 1/3 of back dress neatened
  10. SLEEVE PREPARATION
    1. Gathering evenly distributed
    2. Correctly made from notch to notch
    3. Correctly held and well raffled
      ATTACHING
      1. Good hang
      2. Notches correctly matched
      3. Good stitchery (1) straight (1) correct tension (1)
      4. Side seam and under arm seam meeting to within 2mm
      5. Not trimmed not neatened
