- It provides knowledge about the immediate/wide environment. It makes us to understand the earth on which we live.
- It creates awareness about our country and the rest of the world, promotes international understanding.
- It promotes development of skills/critical thinking.
- It prepares one for career opportunities.

- Name any three study areas in physical geography. (3mks)
- Give three reasons why it is important to study Geography. (3mks)
-
- What is a line of longitude? (2mks)
- It is an imaginary line which is drawn on a map from North pole to south pole and is measured in degrees east or west of the prime meridian.
- What is the local time at Alexandria 30OE when the local time at Malindi 40OE is 12:00 noon? (4mks)
- Difference in degrees of longitude
400 – 300=100
1O is 4 minutes
Total difference in time
100 x 4 = 40 minutes
Alexandria is west of malindi, so it is behind in time by 40 minutes
The local time at Alexandria is
12:00 – 40 minutes
= 11:20 am.
- Difference in degrees of longitude
-
- What is a solar system? (2mks)
- Solar system refers to the composition of the sun, the planets and other heavenly bodies related to the sun.
- Use the diagram below and answer the questions that follow.
What type of eclipse is represented by the diagram? (1mk)- Solar eclipse
- Name the features marked L and M. (2mks)
L - Moon
M - Shadow
- What is a solar system? (2mks)
-
- Define equinox. (2mks)
- Is periods 21st march and 23rd September when the sun is overhead at midday along the equator.
- State the characteristics of summer solstice. (4mks)
- Sun is overhead at midday along the tropic of cancer.
- Days are longer than nights.
- Temperatures are high in the region experience summer solstice.
- 24 hours sunshine within the circles.
- Define equinox. (2mks)
- What is a line of longitude? (2mks)
-
- Name four layers of the earth’s atmosphere. (4mks)
- Troposphere
- Stratosphere
- Mesosphere
- Ionosphere/thermosphere
- The table below represent rainfall and temperature of station Y. use it to answer question (i) and (II).
Months J F M A M J J A S O N D Temp 0C 21 20 20 17 15 13 12 13 15 16 18 20 Rainfall (mm) 12 12 15 15 90 110 87 87 50 35 20 15 - In station Y. calculate the mean annual range of temperature. (2mks)

- Calculate the annual rainfall for station y. (2mks)
= 12 + 12 + 15 +15 + 90 + 110 + 87 + 87 + 50 + 35 + 20 + 15
= 583mm - Describe how convectional rainfall is formed. (6mks)
- Sea/lake water is heated intensely by solar radiation.
- Warm moisture laden air rises and condenses at higher altitude.
- Heating is intense in the afternoon.
- Condense water vapour forms cumulonimbus clouds.
- The clouds eventually give rain accompanied by thunderstorm.
- Calculate the annual rainfall for station y. (2mks)

- Secondary data
- What factors must be considered in selecting methods of data collection. (4mks)
- The method should be inexpensive
- The method should be time saving
- The method should give accurate data
- It must be the most appropriate method.
- State two types of statistical data. (2mks)
- marks: 72, 60, 65, 70, 65, 80, 65,70, 80, 84, 63,75,63,71, 74.
- Use the data above to find out the mean. (2mks)
- = 72 + 60 + 65 +70 +65 +80 + 65 + 70 +80 + 84 +63 +75 +63 +71 + 74
