      • Jezebel swore to kill Elijah the way he had killed the Baal’s prophets.
      • Elijah got afraid and fled to Beersheba after the Mt. Carmel contest.
      • He was discouraged /felt lonely.
      • He got depressed and wished to die.
      • He walked for 40 days and nights to Mt. Horeb/ Sinai.
      • He doubted God’s victory over Baal and thought he had achieved nothing.
      • After prophesying the 3 ½ years drought he lived in fear.
      • He was accused by King Ahab as a trouble maker of Israel.
      • He had to defend his religion to prove that Yahweh was a true God. (6 x 1 = 6mks)
    2. Explain eight effects of idolatry in Israel during the time of prophet Elijah. (8mks)
      • God raised prophets to bring Israel back to the covenant way of life.
      • There was persecution/ hostility towards Yahweh’s people / prophets.
      • Baal prophets /prophetesses were brought to Israel.
      • There was corruption / social injustices/ people rejected the covenant way of life.
      • Israelites practiced syncretism/ mixed the worship of Yahweh with Baal.
      • There was drought in Israel for 31/2 years as a divine curse on the nation.
      • Israel lost her identity as God’s covenant people.
      • Led to Mt. Carmel contest to prove who the true God was.
      • Elijah fled the country / was sustained by God’s power during the period of the drought.

    2. Narrate the parable of the good Samaritan in saint Luke’s gospel. (7mks)

      Jesus gave this parable in response to a lawyer’s question, “and who is my neighbor”.
      A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell in the hands of robbers.
      They stripped him naked, wounded him and left him for the dead.
      A priest was going down the same road and when he saw the wounded man, he passed by on the other side. So also a Levite came to the place and when he saw the wounded man, he passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan came to where the man was and when he saw him had pity on him.
      He bandaged his wounds, pouring wine and oil on them.
      He put the man on his donkey brought him to an inn and took care of the man, pledging to reimburse any extra expenses he would have incurred upon his return.
      Jesus asked the lawyer who of these was a neighbor to the injured man. The lawyer replied the one who had mercy on him. Jesus ordered him to go and do likewise. (7x1 = 7 mks)
    3. Sate five factors which hinder Christians from practicing Jesus command to love one’s neighbour. (5mks)
      • Inadequate resources.
      • Language barrier
      • Adverse environmental conditions
      • Cultural beliefs and traditions
      • Lack of Technical know- how/ knowledge. (5x 1 = 5mks)

      • The cases of the poor were thrown out in courts and were not licensed.
      • The rich used false scales in selling goods to the poor.
      • The poor were denied justice in courts because they could not bribe the judges.

    3. Reasons why Christians find it difficult to help the needy in society. (6mks)
      • There are too many needy cases.
      • Tribal ethnic feelings may hinder one from giving assistance to the needy.
      • Political leanings/ affiliations influence Christians against helping those who do not belong to their camp.
      • Lack of what to share/ inadequate time/ lack of personnel.
      • Indifferences of some Christians to the plight of the needy.
      • Denominational differences where some Christians are not ready to share with those who do not belong to their group.
      • Poor communication / infrastructure in some parts of the country that make it impossible to reach the needy.
