SECTION A: (25 MARKS)

Answer all the questions from this section.

  2. Name two areas where the Suba settled in Kenya. (2 mks)
  3. Outline ways by which one can become a Kenyan citizen. (2 mks)
  4. Give the dispersal area of the Eastern Bantu. (2 mks)
  5. State the historical monument left behind by the Portuguese. (1 mk)
  6. Give two characteristics of human rights. (1 mk)
  7. Mention two Kenyan communities who offered a mixed reaction to British colonization.

  8. Outline one way in which the colonial government controlled the migration of Africans into urban centers. (1 mk)

    • The Anglo-Germany agreement did not fully resolve the dispute between the two powers i.e. Germany and Britain over Uganda.
  14. State two ways in which education promotes national unity in Kenya. (2 mks)
    • Students use the same curriculum
    • Common national examinations
    • Existence of National schools where students from different ethnic groups interact
    • Centralized training and development of teachers
    • Use of common medium of structures.
  15. Mention two circumstances under which an individual freedom of movement may be limited in Kenya. (2 mks)

    1. Give five reasons why the Bantu migrated from their coastal settlement in Shungwaya. (5 mks)
      • Invasion of the settlement by the incoming cushites
      • Internal conflicts
      • Population pressure
      • Outbreak of diseases
      • Search for more land for pasture and settlement.
    2. Describe social organization of the Luo during the pre-colonial period. (10 mks)
      • The family was the basic unit headed by the father
      • Marriage was polygamous where men were allowed to marry many wives and was exogamous where one was not allowed to marry from maternal clan.
      • They initiated their boys at puberty which involved removal of the six lower front teeth
      • They built and lived in grass thatched, mud walled houses
      • They believed in one God-Nyasaye. The Luo prayed to this god through priests who approached him through ancestral spirits
      • They also had diviners who interpreted God’s message to the people. Also had specialists such as rain makers and medicine men.
      • They worshiped their God in sacred places.
      • They had various ceremonies which celebrated through dancing and feasting
      • Their education was informal an continuous from childhood until initiation
      • Work was shared according to gender and age.

    1. What were the roles of mission stations in the spread of Christianity in Kenya in the 19th century? (3 mks)
      • Acted as homes of freed slaves
      • Acted as centers for training the first converts as catechists who were later used to spread the Christianity to the Africans
      • Served as health centers and those who came for treatment were preached to and converted
      • They acted as residential centers for the converting Africans
      • Served as centers for converting Africans
    2. Explain six factors that facilitated missionary work in Kenya in the 19th century.(12 mks)
      • Support of Seyyid who gave Krapf an introductory letter requesting coastal rulers to accord him assistance.
      • That Christianity did not experience a lot of opposition from Islam because it was widespread at the coast not in the interior
      • African converts helped in the spread and taught missionaries their mother tongue
      • Translation of the Bible into local languages.
      • Use of Kiswahili by missionaries-Kiswahili was widely understood by the interior people.
      • Missionaries were quick to learn African languages and later even wrote in them
      • Good transport. The Kenya Uganda railway helped more missionaries to reach the interior
      • Christian teaching of equality appealed to many
      • Kenyan communities lacked organization that could resist missionaries work.

    1. Mention three African women who resisted British colonial rule. (3 mks)

    2. Explain the causes of Agiriama resistance against the British colonial rule. (12 mks)
      • Were forced to give 1000 able-bodied men within a month for the military dutied in the Kings Africa riffles.
      • Were annoyed by the British officials who raped their women
      • The British took over the role of Agiriama middlemen which disrupted their trade
      • The British alienated their land
      • The British imposed forced labour, thus Agiriama leaders lost their power
      • Loss of Tembo and ivory trade. British checked on this making them unhappy

    1. Describe the reasons for the Akamba participation in long distance trade. (8 mks)
      • Land unsuitable for agricultural
      • Existence for entrepreneurs e.g chief kivoi

      • To use sign language, Braille or other appropriate means of communication
      • To access materials and devices that overcome constraints arising from persons with disabilities
      • Be represented in public elective and appointive bodies (at least 5%)
  3.  
    1. Identify any three methods used by Europeans to establish their rule in Kenya. (3 mks)
      • Signing treaties
      • Military attacks

    2. Explain the results of Nandi resistance. (12 mks)
      • Nandi land was alienated
      • Nandi lost their independence
      • Nandi were forced to provide labour in Europe and farms
      • Nandi were resettled in reserves
      • Massive loss of lives

      • Nandi lost their military superiority in the region
      • Nandi warriors were conscripted into the colonial security forces.
