Dowry is a bridal gift that the husband gifts or promises to his wife upon that marriage contract, and that is to honour her. Like the exchanging of rings and vows in a Western wedding, the mahr is the Islamic symbol of marriage and commitment.
The dowry serves as a form of security or money the wife can use in the future for her own benefit upon marriage breakdown.
