I started going to school not because I wanted to but because the time, according to my father, had come. Two days before that, he had brought me different items that the school needed: school uniform, a green school bag, a pencil and some funny-looking shoes. I had not worn one and thus, I had to do a little practice of walking up and down as my mother praised me. To the others, it was something between jeering and cheering. However, one thing was certain; I would go to school the following Monday.

My father accompanied me to school that morning. To my surprise, I was not alone. A number of fathers and mothers had brought their children too and interestingly, we all looked different. Some children were not even in school uniform and majority were in their old torn sandals or plastic shoes. Mine, at home, had got torn and lost so much shape that my sister used to say they looked like some type of fish. I thought I saw one or two resembling mine worn by the children. I smiled but was not in the mood to laugh.

A lady came towards us under the tree where we looked at everything in the school with disapproval. Ou
parents were privileged to sit on wooden desks and some of them, due to their height, age or both, looked like caged animals. A number of us stood near their parents while those of us who felt scared sat on their parents' laps like babies. I was among those who sat on the rocks that littered the area. Earlier on, I had thought the school was a magnificent place, with neat well-painted buildings and systematic arrangements but from the time we went in, all that looked far-fetched. At one time, I felt like relieving myself and I was directed to the toilet. The moment I pushed the door open, I realised I wouldn't make a step further. I moved over to the hedge. I was not sure if wanted to remain behind when the teacher shepherded us into a classroom after taking our details and releasing our parents.

Our first lesson was long and boring. We were asked to introduce ourselves. "What is your name?" The teacher asked when my turn came.
"Njogo" I replied. The class burst into laughter that froze me into a tiny pea. She calmed them down and asked, "Tell us your full name.

I knew my name as Njogo for that is what all my family members and relatives called me. Making this name shorter, longer, better or even full proved to be a nightmare as I stood there like a trapped rat, unable to respond and the class had a suppressed giggle.

"What is your father's name?" She asked me politely.
"Kalu Samba," I replied. She looked into her records and said, "Your name is Samuel Njogo Kalu." She then asked me to repeat the name as she moved on to the next pupil. My introduction session had lasted less than a minute but I realised how easily I could drip sweat.

By the time the lunch bell was rung, I was ready for it. We passed through the door like missles. Onc pupil fell down at the door step, blocking it but not the pupils. They still jumped over him as if practicing for long jump but his bag was not that lucky. Some of them stepped on it and as I sympathised with it, I realised I had left mine under my desk. I retreated for it and that was how I became the last to move out through the door.

Read the passage below and then answer questions 39 to 50

Have you ever seen someone having seizure or wondered what it is like to live with epilepsy? Well, we have some insights about this condition that could be useful to you.

The brain cells send electrical signals that travel along the nerves to the rest of the body. Having epilepsy, however, simply means you have an abnormal burst of electric energy in the brain, which causes seizures to return again and again. A one-off seizure does not mean it is epilepsy.

Epilepsy affects about 60,000 young people under the age of 18. It can affect anyone at any age, from any walk of life. A big part of being epileptic is having seizures. However, what exactly happens when one has a seizure? A person's muscles might tighten and relax quickly or stop moving. They may pass out, shake, fall, stiffen, throw up, drool, pee or lose bowel control. Other seizures are less noticeable. A person might just stare into space or have jerking movements in one part of the body. When the seizure is over, the person may feel sleepy and might not remember what happened.

Due to this, epileptics have to be extremely careful as could have a seizure in an unsafe place. It is important to remain calm,if you are around someone having seizures or if having one. Make sure the area is safe too. It is vital hotto move the person having a seizure as they might be likely to hurt themselves. Seizures last-upto a few seconds to a minute and although it is rare, one can die from epilepsy. While death in epilepsy doesn't happen frequently, epilepsy is a very serious condition and individuals do die from seizures.

Most people with epilepsy take medication every day to help prevent seizures. There medicines are called AEDs or Anti-epileptic drugs. They help control seizures in around 7 out of 10 people. There is a surgery to remove a small part of the brain that is causing the seizures. A procedure to put a small electrical device inside the body that can help control seizures is used. Sticking to a special diet (ketogenic diet) can also help control seizures. Some people need treatment for life but you might be able to stop if your seizures disappear over time.
