Julian finally left his village when there was no one left living there. He had never left his beloved village before, but got intrigued by the fact that everyone had gone to the city. He decided to go and see for himself what wonderful things those cities had. So he packed a knapsack with a few clothes, put on his best smile, and off he went to the city.
On reaching the city, he was given a most unexpected welcome. A couple of policemen stopped Julian and questioned him in great detail. It turned out that Julian had seemed suspiciously happy' for someone with hardly any possessions. In the end, the police had to let go, but they were still suspicious about this apparently simple and good-natured fellow.
The fist thing Julian noticed about the city was all the rushing around. Everyone was in such a hurry that he thought that there must be something special happening that day, which no one wanted to miss. Curious as to what it was, Julian started following a man who looked like he was hurrying to see whatever it was that was happening. However, after several hours following him, the man arrived at a small flat and went inside. He had done or seen nothing of interest that whole day
That night Julian slept in a park. The park was strewn with bits of paper and plastic. As the bins were completely empty, Julian thought how cool it was that the city had seemingly invented plants with petals made of paper and plastic. He only believed this until the following morning when a man came by and dropped his chocolate wrapper.
Julian carried on walking through the city streets, trying to understand what was going on when he arrived at a group of big warehouses, which many people were entering. "This must be the best museum in the world," he thought on entering and seeing all the useless-looking things they had inside. But then he saw that people were picking these things up, paying for them, and taking them away.
"Why would anyone want a watch which doesn't show the minute?" he wondered to himself after seeing a woman very contentedly leaving with the most modem of watches on her wrist. Once again, he decided to follow the lady with the watch. He saw her joy turn into disappointment whe her friends gave her new watch a look of disapproval. Julian started wishing he had not left hi village, just to come to this place where no one seemed happy.
Then he saw a few kids playing. Now, they certainly did seem happy, playing, running about chasing each other. Except for one child, who se: med troubled by a little machine they were calling a video game. He was hitting it so hard with his fingers, and making all kinds of faces and angry gestures.
Julian thought that the boy was trying to destroy that little machine because it was making him so unhappy. He decided to help the boy. Julian went over, took the gadget, threw it on the ground stamped on it, and looked at the boy with great satisfaction. At this, the boy flew into a rage, as di all the other children there, and nearly all the adults. They pursued Julian so relentlessly that he had to run away. When James was suspended from his school in July, his parents could not receive him. Investigation done in school showed that he was indisciplined and the ringleader of bad company in school. His father was particularly very bitter about it after spending all his resources sending him to a boarding school while other siblings were in simple day schools. To make matters worse, he had deteriorated in performance immediately he entered his last grade.
James was neither a child nor an adult. He had no one to share problems with as he was the first born. His mother could not intervene as his father ruled the fily with an iron rod. The teachers could not listen to him and so were his parents and society.
James woke up in the morning. His father had gone to work and his mother was in the kitchen. He went to the kitchen and asked for breakfast.
"Your breakfast is in school. Take a glass of water and go to the farm. Your father will come to check the work you are doing in the shamba," his mother answered him.
"But......" James tried to explain but his mother interrupted immediately and harshly. "If you have any question or you might require any explanation, enquire from your father or write to him." James went outside, sat on the wet grass and dropped his head between his legs. Surely, he was in deep thought.
"My father has surely invested in me by placing me in the most expensive school. He provides me with all my needs and is always concerned with my education. I can't blame him for anything, neither my mother. Now what can I do? James thought deeply. He realised he was crying when he saw drops of liquid fall on the ground. He took his handkerchief, wiped his face and his nose. This was just the second day at home. He has to do something before things got worse.
He stood up, went to his room and locked the door behind. He took a pen and plucked some sheets of papers from his book. He was to apologise to his father, mother and finally to the headteacher in school.
As he wrote the letters, he thought about his peers from rich families and cursed loudly. Then he realised he was talking to himself.
"Oh my God! I'm becoming mad. I have to be baptized a new. I am the cause of all this. No peace at all in the family," he murmured to himself.
He jerked his head as he realised there was a shadow at the window. His mother had been there watching all his movements and actions and even she could read the writing at the end of the table.

I had always prided myself on my sharp tongue and witty retorts whether in class debates or casual arguments. Thus, when I was selected to represent the school in the regional debate series, I was naturally supremely confident of my readiness for the task. Little did I know that this would turn out to be one of the most important lessons in my life.
The run-up to the finals was a breeze for my team. We were all good speakers who had the benefit of an experienced teacher who trained us well. But in the team, I was undoubtedly the most outstanding speaker. In each of the rounds that I debated, the judges had unanimously selected me as the best speaker. This meant that my confidence was at an all-time high by the time we found ourselves with one week to train before the finals. I had no reason to even think that I would not be voted the overall best speaker for the debate series.
Unfortunately, this got into my head and I began to get arrogant about the whole busines. I started putting on airs. I would laugh at what I saw as their pathetic arguments and poor debating style. I saw myself as the natural debater who would be let down by my teammates bad performance. As the finals drew closer, I became more and more dissatisfied with my team. I began missing practice, much to the panic of my teammates and the frustration of the teacher. They had no choice but to rely on me to pull through on the day of the finals. As much as they would love to remove me from the team, they could not as there was no replacement good enough.
The day of the finals dawned bright and fine. I practically skipped to the venue of the debate finals, feeling the exhilaration of being able to finally show off my debating prowess. But the reality was not something that I had ever imagined. My absence from the practice sessions had created a rift between my teammates and me. We could not seem to work seamlessly like we did in the previous rounds. Instead, our coordination was so bad that even our school supporters were shamed into silence. When it was my turn to conclude as the last speaker of the team, an expectant hush fell over the hall. Everyone knew that I was touted as the one most likely debater to win the coveted overall best speaker for the series.
As I launched into my speech, I knew that things were very wrong. I was hesitant in my explanation of the issue. I had redlised rather late that what I was saying sounded incoherent. It did not in relate to my teammates' points. The puzzled looks on the faces of the judges almost drove me to tears. I had to struggle on with my speech, trying to hold back the hot tears that threatened to overflow. I realised too late that I could have been a really good speaker if only I had not been overconfident. As I sat down after speaking my piece, tears broke their banks and scalded my cheeks. I knew that we had lost the title. Never before had I ever felt so alone, or so rightly so.
Suddenly, a reassuring hand clasped mine. I looked up into the kindly face of my teammate, the one whom I had earlier condemned as a moron to her face. She gestured that it was all right and that I should not feel bad. That made me feel even worse. The other two teammates of mine came over and hugged me. Together, they hoped to stem my feelings of regret and pain even though I had rightfully deserved everything and more. In fact, I had cost them the title. I kept sobbing the word "sorry" to them, feeling even worse now that they had repaid my irresponsibility and pride with their kind words and comforting gestures. Even my teacher came over to give me a tight squeeze on the shoulder to say that all was forgiven. When we were called to receive the prize for the first runner-up position, we went up together as a team and bravely lifted the trophy to salute the cheers of our supporters. I finally realised what it was like to be a team.

Read the passage below and answer questions 39 to 50.
Most African countries are slowly adopting the anti-public smoking campaigns by designating certain regions for smokers. In most countries, there are smoking zones and times beyond which individuals are not allowed to smoke. For instance, even though there is no specific time for smoking, government workers are not supposed to be found smoking during working hours. In addition, people are not allowed to smoke while inside buses, churches, schools and cinema halls. Anyone found breaking this rule will be brought to book. Public smoking is prohibited due to the following reasons.
First and foremost, smoking accounts for a significant number of respiratory infections like lung cancer and throat inflammation. Although, there is no law that stops individuals from smoking, it is advisable to ensure that only willing smokers are exposed to cigarette smoke. This means that those willing to smoke are allowed to do so but should also bear in mind the welfare of other people. All cigarette manufacturing companies have clear warnings on their products advising consumers to avoid excessive smoking. In addition, their advertisements carry strong messages that cigarette smoking is not beneficial to health. There are even scary images of the effects of smoking. Smokers know these instructions very well but, as strange as it is, they ignore them. While buying cigarette packets, their eyes usually cross the many bold advertisements and conspicuous images and rush to see the contents without giving the instructions and images a second thought. They ignore these instructions and images at their own will and later suffer the consequences. On the other hand, the government has a duty of ensuring all citizens are guaranteed safe and healthy environment. This means that smokers should not interfere with non smokers by smoking in public. This policy protects innocent civilians against the effects of tobacco smoke.
In addition, smoking must not be done in the presence of children. It should be noted that parents are role models to their children. Children emulate their parents and other senior members of their societies. No parent is ready to see his school-going child puffing tobacco fumes while studying. This sight is not only disgusting but also unacceptable. Therefore, to avoid exposing children to cigarette smoking, it is necessary to regulate smoking habits. This is why most nations are adopting the anti-public smoking policy to prevent children from learning this habit. It is clear that it is impossible to stop an adult from smoking but it is advisable for the person to smoke while in a designated place. These smoking zones are usually out of bounds for children. Besides, some habits are regarded as public nuisance. A public place is supposed to have order and accommodate people from various backgrounds. The fact that people have different personalities should not be an excuse for anyone to misbehave. Public smoking is public nuisance just like shouting in public. Therefore, anti-public smoking policies should be reinforced, if possible, in all countries.
In addition, the world is struggling to control and eliminate all forms of pollution. In the early years of civilization, most automobiles used fuels that emitted a lot of smoke. For instance, the trains and ships that used steam were largely dependent on firewood to boil water. Consequently, the amounts of smoke emitted by these engines were much more than the benefits achieved by these transport vessels. Pollution was at its best while the destruction of natural forests also became an issue of serious concern. Even though some critics argue that tobacco smoke is not sufficient enough to cause climate change this argument is misleading and cannot be used to justify smoking in public places. In a country where three out of ten people smoke on a regular basis, the average smoke emitted in the whole country is far much more than the smoke that a truck full of rice emits. This means that the smoke emitted when many people smoke on a daily basis is enough to fill tons of gas cylinders. The little amount of smoke produced by each cigarette accumulates in the atmosphere and is responsible for a number of climate changes.
Moreover, public smoking is as dangerous as walking in a workshop without shoes or other protective clothes. Most public places do not have ash trays to deposit the filter or ashes produced after smoking. It is evident that most forest and domestic fires have been caused by irresponsible smokers. Most of them usually dump their cigarette butts along footpaths or in bushes while only a few of them squeeze them between their fingers or step on them to extinguish them. The majority of the population is usually careless and leaves lighted cigarettes on the roadside or public benches. Some are ignorant enough to dump lighted cigarettes butts in public dustbins only to be shocked later by fire eruptions. Needless to say, prohibiting public smoking will ensure that all smokers dump their unfinished or finished cigarettes in designated places. These places are usually equipped with water and fire extinguishers to make sure all emergencies are handled as soon as they arise.

Read the passage below and then answer questions 26-38.
At last, the eagerly awaited day arrived. The Girl Guides and Boy Scouts of Kotol School were going to climb Mt. Mlima. They had countless imaginations of the wonderful stories they would have for their families at the end of the day.
The Scouts and Guides looked spotlessly clean. The girls were in their usual blue uniforms and the boys in their khaki shorts and shirts. They felt privileged to be members of these honourable societies. For their school you could not just decide to become a Girl Guide or Boy Scout. You had to eam membership through good character.
Baraka and her sister Halima, were both very active members of the Scound Guide Societies. The two were natural leaders. They were respected by their friends and the teachers found them dependable.
On this particular day, a hired bus took them to a shopping centre near the edge of the forest. The driver was to wait there till evening when the group came back.
The boys and girls together with their teachers now trooped along a narrow path that penetrated the bush. One moment they were singing, in another, they were pointing out or describing familiar or strange birds and plants. The trees echoed their laughter, singing in joyful voices. Occasionally they played hide and seek. Oh, there was so much fun!
Soon they reached a clearing with lovely green grass. Immediately the stomachs seemed to announce that they were now empty and needed filling. As the group sat down to eat the lunch they had carried, the teacher realized that there were two lunch parcels that remained after everybody had been served.
"How come there are two extra parcels?" one teacher asked. "I thought we packed thirty. one for each of us?"
The teachers were about to add what they were now sure must have happened when Halima quickly said, "I think two of us are missing." As though a curtain had been lifted, it dawned on them; Daudi and Jakait were missing!
The teachers quickly decided that one of them would be left with the group having lunch while the other teacher would go back to look for the missing boys. Baraka and Hatima immediately volunteered to accompany the teacher on the search.
The teacher led the way, and for a whole hour they searched in vain along the path and surrounding bushes. They were about to give up when from a distance they heard some movement. Then, there was silence. They listened again with expectation. A small animal sprang up from the bush and shot across the path like lightning.
"Oh," said the teacher in a disappointed voice. "So, it was only a squirrel."
As the teacher and his two pupils walked away not knowing where else to look. their attention was caught by some groans coming from the bush. They tiptoed to the direction the groans were coming from. After a short distance they could make out two human beings, in fact two boys. One was half carrying and half dragging the other.
"It's them! It's Daudi and Jakait!" they exclaimed They pushed themselves against the forest creepers until they got to the pair Daudi was overjoyed to see the teacher and his friends Jakalt said nothing He was sweating and vomiting badly. He looked very sick. It was later learnt that in search of more adventure, Daudi and Jakait had mischievously separated themselves from the group. They had hoped to join them only after a short time. Jakait had forgotten the teachers warning and had eaten some wild fruits that looked very tempting. It is these fruits that had made him sick
With the help of a strong piece of cloth that Halima had carried, they made a stretcher on which they carried Jakait. They decided to go back to the bus.
They walked on and on through the forest and bush. However, the way looked longer than expected. The ground now sloped and they found themselves approaching an unfamiliar stream. The place looked strange. The teacher informed the pupils that he was convinced they had taken the wrong path. He asked Baraka to consult his compass.
"Yes: We are going in the wrong direction," said Baraka after looking at the compass. The thick bushes and trees must have confused them. They retraced their steps. After an hour, they managed to get to the bus. The others, after waiting for a long time, they had decided to discontinue their trip and had gone back to the bus. They were happy to be reunited but were sad that their friend was so sick.

Read the passage below and then answer questions 39 -50.
On Everest itself the winds blow so fiercely that it is often impossible for a man to stand up. At night it is intensely cold. Snowstorms and blizzards pile thick snow on the slopes. Often masses of snow sweep down the mountain-side in avalanches.
Even if the weather is kind, there are other dangers and obstacles. The air on Everest is itself a threat to man, for the higher he climbs the more difficult it is for him to breath. That is because the higher he goes, the thinner, or less dense, is the air. Thus, the amount of oxygen in the air gets less, and without oxygen no man can live.
On Everest, therefore, breathing becomes very difficult so that the climber's task is much harder than it is on smaller mountains. At a certain height, in fact, it is necessary for him to breathe oxygen from a cylinder through a mask on his face. But this equipment is too heavy for climbers to carry enough oxygen to be able to use it all the time.
The result is that they have to climb very slowly. This, in turn, means that they have to spend a longer time on the mountain; and the longer they take to climb, the more food and supplies they need. All these have to be carried with them.
On the other hand, they cannot spend too long on the mountain because of the weather. The intense cold and fierce winds sap their strength. There are times when the snow is so thick that it is impossible to climb at all,
All through the winter, from November until March, the wind blowing from the north-west is so fierce and cold that no human being can live in it. Snow falls deeply on the mountain-side. and avalanches occur frequently.
In the summer, after the cold north wind has died away, a warm damp wind (the monsoon) blows from the south-west, from the Bay of Bengal. This wind is known as the S.W. Monsoon and gets its name from an Arab word meaning "season". This monsoon wind also brings snow, which forms in deep layers on the upper slopes of the mountain; so that anyone who tries to climb would be faced with dangers and difficulties impossible to overcome.
There are, in fact, only two short periods in which climbers can stay on the mountain long enough to reach the top. These periods occur in the spring and autumn-just before the monsoon starts, and just after it dies away. Even at these times the weather is not always good enough for a successful assault to be made. In some years the monsoon winds reach Everest almost as soon as the winter winds have died away; in the other years the summer monsoon lasts until the first winds of winter. In such years there can be little climbing on Everest.
- According to the climber in the first paragraph, weather conditions on Mount Everest are
- always favourable
- never favourable
- often favourable
- rarely favourable
- Why does breathing become very difficult on Everest?
- Because there is no oxygen in the air.
- Because the amount of oxygen becomes less in the air as a climber goes higher.
- Because climbing is more difficult than running.
- Because the climber has to face many dangers and obstacles even if the weather is favourable.
According to the third paragraph- a climber has to breathe oxygen from a cylinder all the time on Everest.
- a climber's task on smaller mountains is much harder than it is on Everest.
- a climber must breathe oxygen from the equipment he carries on his back at a certain height on Everest.
- the oxygen equipment is light enough for all climbers to carry.
- The climbers need more food and supplies if
- they do not carry the oxygen equipment.
- they climb very slowly.
- they are held up because of a snowstorm.
- they intend to climb the mountain well ahead of their schedule.
- It is not possible for a climber to remain on a mountain for a long period of time
- because the oxygen equipment is too heavy to carry.
- because he may not have a long way to go
- because there might be thick snow on it
- because he cannot stand the intensity of cold and fierceness of winds.
- Deep layers of snow are formed on the upper slopes of Everest
- before the north wind has died away.
- when the S.W. Monsoon winds blow.
- after the north wind has begun.
- when no monsoon winds blow.
- The expression sap their strength, printed in bold in the fifth paragraph, refers to the fact that
- the climbers become very vigorous.
- they become very courageous because of their determination.
- they have their energy weakened.
- they gradually regain their strength.
- It is clear from the passage that Mount Everest can be climbed
- in the winter.
- in the summer.
- all through the spring and the autumn.
- during brief periods in the spring and autumn when no monsoon winds blow.
- The word fiercely, printed in bold, can be best replaced by
- slowly.
- continuously.
- violently.
- gently.
- What is the effect of the slow climb of the mountain?
- The climber grows older with time.
- The climber uses more resources and time.
- The climber gets a chance to learn about the many features on the mountain.
- The climber gives up and returns home.
- The word assault, printed in boid in the last paragraph, means
- attack.

- retreat.
- charge.
- The best title for the passage above would be
- Climbing Mount Everest.
- What to expect on Mount Everest.
- The dangers of the mountain.
- The challenges of mountain climbing

Read the passage below and then answer questions 26 to 38.
They liked Rebecca during communal work, especially those that involved cooking. Whenever there was a wedding preparation, burial or church function, women were selected to offer catering services. This is because there were characters who could do more damage than good. Rebecca had good and modern crockeries and utensils for she and her husband had lived in town for quite a long time. This is why she always topped the list.
It was normal to share out food to such women once the visitors left just as it was a taboo to throw away food. Every single one of them was given equal share, irrespective of the work they had done or the size of their families back at home. However, they always knew how much to expect immediately after serving the visitors for they were also experts at sharing out the food by just looking at it while still in the pots. Any of them could be given the responsibility of sharing out the food but it was done as they all stood there, supervising and giving direction where necessary. Maria, however, was the favourite bet for this.
The women had successfully taken care of a wedding delegation and it was time for sharing out the uncaten food. Rebecca was still arranging her utensils and crockery in her basket and because of the impending bad weather, the others started the sharing out exercise without her. In a short while, it was done and each of the six women picked a served bowl. Only one remained; Rebecca's. She rarely raised queries on sharing but by the time she came for it, it was mysteriously missing!
The others had their baskets on their heads, ready to leave when Teresa asked them to hold on. She demanded to know where Rebeca's share had gone to but they all looked perplexed. They put down their baskets, each ready to reveal the content of their baskets to prove their innocence. Interestingly, the bowl in which the lost food had been served also belonged to Rebecca so she pleaded with whoever had it to even take the food but leave the bowl behind but Teresa would hear none of it. She wanted both returned there and then. It was then that Sella interjected that there were several dogs hovering about in the compound and they could have eaten the food. Maria looked at her directly in the eye and asked if dogs ate even serving bowls of late. All the others laughed except Sella. The others wondered and already became suspicious.
Each of them was asked to bring out their bowls of food for inspection, one by one. Maria volunteered to have hers checked first, having been the one who served all the others. The others were satisfied with it one by one, the others opened theirs and moved aside to repack. When it reached Sella's turn, her bag was still outside and a dog was seen nosing around it. One of the women rushed out, chased it away and carried the bag inside. The moment it was placed down, all of them moved closer to it. She moved one step backwards but the others raised their voices, asking her to remain exactly where she had been. They descended on it and the bowl in question was easily found. Inside it was the food as it had been served!
As the others started throwing unprintables at Sella, Rebecca, without saying a word, took the bowl, put it in her basket and mumbled a "Thank you' to no one in particular and slithered away.
- The main reason why the others liked Rebecca is because
- she talked very little during work
- she volunteered to give out her crockery and utensils
- she worked well with others
- she was always available when needed.
- Wedding preparation, burial or church functions are given as examples of
- where women used their household items

- Rebecca's crockery and utensils were sought for as
- they were of high quality

- Why was left over food shared among the women?
- The food is what had made them go to work.
- They did not like being paid money.
- Their serving bowls could not be returned empty.
- In appreciation for the services they offered.
- Even before the food was shared out, the women
- would always consult on the formula to use

- She was ensuring her personal items were safe.
- The work had been allocated to a different woman.

- The other women had their baskets on their heads because
- each wanted to go and eat at their own homes
- they did not want trouble with Rebecca

Read the passage below and then answer questions 39 to 50.
Bad news is part of life. There is a time when so many good things happen in our lives and we crown each of them with a celebration. We feel good and take it for granted that more of such will always flow towards us. Then, the wind changes direction and bad news start dropping in, one after the other. Shocking as it may be even to you, at times, you are expected to step up and be the one to relay this news to the others.
When sharing the bad news, it will be painful, uncomfortable and at times, awkward. You have no control over your audience. They could react in a manner that you least expected upon receiving such news. Some of them could already be in bad health and this calls for you to balance your act. A wrong statement or rather, a correct one released at the wrong time and it could end up causing a bigger problem than the initial one.
Analyse the situation carefully and if need be, consult with the others elsewhere first. You have to be sure the audience can handle the bad news and this is why the preparation has to be done in good time. Before you deliver the bad news, you must take care of yourself first. Do not break the news when you are upset or emotionally unstable. Take a moment to go through what the reaction of the others could do to you. When you are sure about yourself, you can let the cat out of the bag. Chances are that you too could end up breaking down following the reaction of the others. Do not be too hard on yourself because you will struggle with your side of the process.
Finding the right words to use could also be tough. Be sincere, talk naturally and try to be as calm as you can. Practice what you will say in good time and let not your face betray you. Keep your message simple and clear. This is not the time to beat about the bush. Do not allow others to push you to release the message in a way you had not planned to. Answering their questions directly could lead you into this trap.
You must also factor in the state of their mind. Can they handle the kind of news you have? This will determine the approach. Share the news while everybody, including you, is seated and if possible, you should maintain eye contact.
They may lash out at you. Do not take it at heart if they do. Understand that they are just getting the news but you have had it for some time, even for days. Should they want to take more time with you, be there for them.
- As you continue to receive good things in life
- celebration should become a normal thing
- you should not forget that bad news too could come
- it's possible to share the same with others
- it shows not everybody gets bad luck.
- By saying that the wind changes direc- tion, the writer implies that
- bad luck starts coming to us
- the weather suddenly changes unexpectedly
- both good and bad luck gets mixed up
- we become unable to differentiate bad from good luck.
- When you are the one to relay the bad news to others
- it could shock you more than them
- the news will affect you in the same way
- shows you are responsible for its cause
- it gives you a heavier responsibility.
- You may have no control over your audience because
- you are not used to relaying such news
- others may decide to ignore you
- it may affect them badly
- you are not a trustworthy person.
- By balancing your act, the writer suggests that you should
- combine both truth and false statements
- choose the best way to relay the news
- not talk to a big crowd of people
- neither be too loud nor too in audible.
- A correct statement should be released
- to the actual audience at the right time
- to anybody because it is the truth
- when everybody is aware of it
- only if the speaker knows the cause of the problem.
- How should you be sure of yourself before delivering bad news?
- You should ensure you're not telling lies.
- You should be comfortably seated.
- You should check if you can escape if need be.
- You should be in control of your emotions.
- The phrase 'let the cat out of the bag' as used in the passage means to
- frighten your audience with the news
- behave in a strange way
- give the unexpected news
- show your audience how good you are.
- How can the reaction of the others affect you?
- They may refuse to believe your statement.
- Their reaction could make you break down too.
- It may turn out to be good to some of them.
- Each of them may ask you questions.
- Which of the following words mean the same as 'handle' as used in the fifth paragraph?
- Accommodate
- Hear
- Conclude
- Compare.
- Staying with your audience for some time is good as it
- helps confirm that you have told the " truth
- attracts more people who come to hear it
- reminds them that it's you who gave the news
- it could help control their emotions.
- The best title for this passage would be
- Balancing bad and good news.
- The quick spread of bad news.
- The burden of bearing bad news.
- Choosing the audience for bad news.

Nothing seemed ordinary as an array of silent wind blew around. Fear crept into Mwendwa. Was this real or some sort of imagination? His heart nearly leapt into his mouth when he saw a silhouette of a huge man. A close-keen look proved to him that it was nothing but a tree.
The thought of breaking into a run to save his dear life crossed his mind but his feet were too feeble to move even an inch. His squinted eyes toured from corner to corner trying to unravel the source of the weird noise.
Flooded in fear, Mwendwa stammered an inaudible prayer; something which he had never done from time immemorial. Fervently, he tried calling all the spiritual beings he had ever heard about. However, one thing was crystal-clear, they had better and more 'serious' matters to attend to. In great fear, he broke into a run hoping against hope to atleast salvage his dear life. It was very evident that lady luck was without a doubt not on his side, probably the god's were against him. He quickly tiptoed on a loop and feli face flat. To rub salt to injury, he sustained a deep cut which made him to bleed heavily. As if that was not enough, he had ripped off his short.
Writhing in pain, he leapt off the mucky ground. It was foolish to labour his mind over such a mere thing. Come what may, he had to put up a fight and see another day. Mwendwa knew he had not a single soul on his side not even the Almighty Deity after all his mischief; he had no one to depend on.
He shed teardrops in bitterness and remorse mourning like he had never done before. If actions could be undone then pressing the 'undo' button would have been the best option but if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. A look into the clear sky spelt doom for Mwendwa for he had been far away from home. His family members would be left in shock after learning where he was; no company or even a mobile phone. Nothing of such kind had ever happened to them, for any reason whatsoever.
The rustling of leaves under his feet brought him back to reality. He had to quickly formulate a plan which would see him escape his immediate predicaments. Through thick and thin he had to survive and live to tell the tale if anyone cared to listen. A continued run into an alien place was riddled with the option of no trace but remaining alive was a very slim chance. In the recent days, there had been numerous complains of how difficult it had become to put food on the table. Worse still was the opportunity for Mwendwa getting employed despite being a minor. Nobody would risk it. At the same time, hunger pangs were making his belly to feel uncomfortable. Not even some wild berries would be spotted in sight to quench his starving body. He made a big yawn before proceeding with his journey which only God knew where to.
A clear stream of mountain waters gave Mwendwa a reason to believe that he would actually survive. He knelt down and drank to his fill straight from the stream. All this while he was so grateful to have come across it. He also opted to wash his dry face and dusty feet before marching on. The sun was setting fast when he came across a dusty, abandoned road. He clearly felt that his body was giving in pretty fast. Any nearby person would have helped him but there was none in sight.
With a thud, his mass of body collapsed right away on the side of the road. He was gone, not sure whether he would walk on earth again. After seemingly having had been in deep slumber, Mwendwa came to only to find a young lady with a stethoscope standing next to him. He smiled at her and she did smile back assuring him that he was alive and in the hospital. No family member was in sight but the nurse informed him that they had spent the previous night watching over him and that they had rushed back home before coming back during visiting hours.
The nurse asked him to rest and that they would talk at a later time. Mwendwa obliged though not knowing how he would explain his disappearance as well as his action.

Read the passage below and answer questions 39 - 50.
As the largest of all land mammals, African elephants play an important role in balancing nature. They trample forests and dense grasslands, making room for smaller species to co-exist. Elephants also create water holes used by other wildlife as they dig dry riverbeds when rainfall is low. Herds travel over vast grasslands and they disperse seeds in their dung, which helps generate new green growth. But threats to this giant of the forest are numerous. African elephants are most threatened by the poaching crisis. A great number is killed every year for their tusks; the natural growth rate in most elephant populations has yet to overtake the rate of killings. Many elephants are also the victims of retaliatory attacks after they venture into human settlement and farm areas.
Meanwhile, climate change and human land use are degrading wild lands, breaking up essential elephant habitats and impending ancient migratory corridors. With the growth of commercial agriculture and infrastructure development, as well as extractive industry across the continent, the future of this species is at risk.
To reserve the drastic decline and secure natural habitats, a deliberate effort to protect the ecosystem is needed. Conservation work should extend across a range of states, including Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Identified priority landscapes- some spanning thousands of kilometres across countries are under watch. Provision of wildlife rangers and community scouts with the skills and equipment is needed to prevent the illegal killing of this keystone species.
At the same time, working with local communities and landowners to minimize habitat loss caused by unsustainable farming and overgrazing is an ideal thing to do. The training of farming communities in conservation-friendly agriculture and creating land-use plans with communities that might otherwise encroach on critical wildlife corridors outside protected areas is recommended.
The Amboseli is a vital elephant stronghold and popular tourist destination in East Africa. The community created conservancies to secure more space for elephants and other wildlife species. On these communal lands there is provision of an alternative livelihood for pastoralist groups using wildlife corridors as grazing land. By building the technical capacity of wildlife protection, rangers on the ground has strengthened monitoring systems that track threats across vast landscapes. Ranger training and provision of monitoring equipment patrol teams have destroyed uncountable poaching camps, arrested the poachers and confisticated elephant tusks and firearms.
However, catching poachers is only half the battle. Training and deployment of sniffer dog units at strategic ports of entry and exit has helped to deter trafficking and catch smugglers. Without effective prosecution, wildlife offenders can evade punishment-and worse still, continue to engage in crime against elephants. Prosecutors and law enforcers offer effective wildlife crime investigation and prosecution.
In Tsavo which stretches across Kenya and Tanzania, cross-border coordination between anti-poaching units and wildlife law enforcement units has continued to deliver the much needed impact. Aerial widlife count shows that elephant population has increased tremendously. In addition to the growth of elephant population, buffalo and giraffe populations have increased. However, some elephant carcasses were spotted. This is a reminder that the elephant species is under constant threat from habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict and poaching for its ivory..

Read the passage below and answer questions 26 to 38
I had always prided myself on my sharp tongue and witty retorts whether in class debates or casual arguments. Thus, when I was selected to represent the school in the regional debate series, I was naturally supremely confident of my readiness for the task. Little did I know that this would turn out to be one of the most important lessons in my life..
I had no reason to even think that I would not be voted the overall best speaker for
the debate series.
I had realised rather late that what I was saying sounded incoherent.

English Questions and Answers - Grade 6 Mid Term 1 Exams 2023 Set 6
Read the following story and answer the questions that follow.
There once was a shepherd boy who was bored as he sat on the hillside watching the village sheep. To amuse himself he took a great breath and sang out, "Wolf! Wolf! The Wolf is chasing the sheep!" The villagers came running up the hill to help the boy drive the wolf away. But when they arrived at the top of the hill, they found no wolf. The boy laughed at the sight of their angry faces. "Don't cry 'wolf, shepherd boy," said the villagers, "when there's no wolf!" They went grumbling back down the hill.
Later, the boy sang out again, "Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!" To his naughty delight, he watched the villagers run up the hill to help him drive the wolf away. When the villagers saw no wolf, they sternly said, "Save your frightened song for when there is really something wrong! Don't cry 'wolf' when there is no wolf!" But the boy just grinned and watched them go grumbling down the hill once more.
Later, he saw a REAL wolf prowling about his flock. Alarmed, he leaped to his feet and sang out as loudly as he could, "Wolf! Wolf!" But the villagers thought he was trying to fool them again, and so they didn't come. At sunset, everyone wondered why the shepherd boy hadn't returned to the village with their sheep. They went up the hill to find the boy. They found him weeping.
"There really was a wolf here! The flock has scattered! I cried out, "Wolf!" Why didn't you come?" An old man tried to comfort the boy as they walked back to the village. Read the passage below and answer the following questions.
The Importance of Sport for the children's health is that sport helps children to develop both physically and mentally. Physical activity should be part of our daily life. Practicing any kind of sport from an early age helps children in many ways, for example, group activities improve interaction and social integration. It also improves the mental level and promotes a healthy lifestyle in adulthood, as the habits we acquire as children are often to stay. Sports have multiple healthy benefits. If we talk on a psychological or personality level, sports activities (especially those done in groups) help children to strengthen their social self-esteem, and allow them to understand the importance of having and respecting the rules.
Another aspect to consider is what type of sport or activity will suit best the child considering his/her conditions and abilities. A more timid and shy child is likely to get better at a sport where she/he has to relate to peers. To a more active one, an individual sport such as tennis can help better develop her/his ability to concentrate.
One of the perhaps most relevant issues is the importance of physical exercise, not only in children but also in young and old people, because moderate daily physical exercise helps prevent overweight and obesity.
Taking into account the growth of the percentage of children and young people with obesity and overweight in the current world, the inclusion of sport in the family routine becomes almost mandatory.
Sport can also have the power to help us rest. For all those fathers and mothers of active children, try to get them to run every day playing soccer, or swimming or any other activity that keeps them physically active. They will fall asleep in bed in a matter of seconds and you, dads and moms, too.

- One which requires silence.
- One which requires he/she to relate to peers.

English Questions and Answers - Grade 6 Mid Term 1 Exams 2023 Set 5
Read the passage below and answer questions 1 to 4.
Martin burped loudly at the table. Father chuckled. Grandma shook her head disapprovingly.
"Martin!" His mother growled, eyeing her husband grumpily as well. She had quite had enough of this behavior, and decided to finally fix it. He burped again and then he wiped his mouth on the table cloth. "Man I am so charming!" He chuckled.
"Martin unless you want to do the laundry and you want to start eating out of a dog's bowl, I suggest you find some manners." "Like what? Martin groaned, leaning on the table with both elbows. "Elbows off the table." Martin lifted his elbows and fidgeted with his napkin. "The napkin goes on your lap," mother ordered, "and no eating with your fingers."
Martin sighed and peeking out the corners of his eyes at his mom, he grabbed his spoon and started shoveling food into his mouth with his face about two inches off the plate. Speed eating was fun. He liked to see how much he could get into his mouth at once.
"Whoa there! I had no idea this was a feeding trough," mother laughed. Try using a fork, sitting up and closing your mouth when you chew. If you can't get the fork to your mouth without spilling the food on your lap, you are overloading it."
"Then it takes forever to eat, and I want to go and watch TV." Martin whined. "You will eat properly, and you will stay and have a discussion with us until we are all done with our meals. This is not a
drive-through. Eat slowly and neatly, and then help me wash the dishes."
"But..." Martin began to protest.
"Dog bowl?" Mother offered.
"No, thank you." Martin said softly, which made grandma smile. Mother smiled when Martin lifted a carefully -loaded fork of food to his mouth closed. "Excellent. You might still make someone a good husband." Father cleared his throat and ate neatly, too. He didn't get a complement though.

Read the passage below and answer questions 10 to 15.
One day my mother whipped me for not taking my chores seriously. I did not clean the house properly and when she returned from the market, where she had gone to sell grocery, she could not spare me. After that, I sadly retreated to my bed and soon I was deeply asleep.
I then ran away into a very deep wilderness home far away from my parents. It was so peaceful and tranquil. For once my mother would not be there with her do's and don'ts. My life would have no sadness of any kind or so I thought.
Things however changed one afternoon when strong winds accompanied by lightning struck the ground several times. All the living things I had lived with for months retreated to their respective abodes. Rodents were the first to leave for their holes. Birds complained that their homes were being shaken and
flew away to different homes elsewhere. I was left alone and the worst happened. The final lightning
struck my home setting it ablaze
For the first time in my life I longed for home, our nice home where everyone was present. I had no choice but to go home. It took a while but as I was about to reach home my mother shook me up! I was
almost late for school.
