There are many stories and questions on how the zebra got his stripes and here in Africa one of the most well-known is from the San who are the Bushmen of people of the Namibian Kalahari Desert. Many Africans tales and stories were told of wild animals in Africa, to explain their unique look or behaviour.

So, how did the zebra get his black stripes, or is it white stripes?? Well, let me tell you the fable. Long ago, when animals were still new in Africa, the weather was very hot, and what little water was there remained in a few pools and pans. Animals were dying in large numbers and the few who remained were miserable and constantly thirsty.

One of the remaining water pools was guarded by a boisterous baboon, who claimed that he was the lord of the water and forbade anyone from drinking at his pooll. One fine day when a zebra and his son came down to have a drink of water, the baboon, who was sitting by his fire next to the water hole, jumped up and barked in a loud voice. "Go away, intruders. This is my pool and I am the lord of the water."

The water is for everyone, not just for you, monkey-face," The zebra's son shouted back, "If you want some of the water, you must fight for it," returned the baboon in a fine fury, and in a moment the two were locked in combat. Back and forth they went fighting, raising huge cloud of dust, until with a mighty kick, the zebra sent the baboon flying up among the rocks of the cliff behind them. The baboon landed with a smack on his buttocks, taking all the hair clean off, and to this very day, he still carries the bare patch where he landed. The tired and bruised young zebra, not looking where he was going staggered back through the baboon's fire, which scorched him, leaving black burn stripes across his white fur. The shock of being burned. sent the zebra galloping away to savannah plains, where he has stayed ever since.

The baboon and his family, however, remain high up among the rocks where they bark defiance at all strangers, and when walking around, they still hold up their tails to ease the sore rock burn of their bald patched bottoms.

Many of us have baby brothers or sisters. If not, you must have taken care of one when you visited a relative or a neighbour. Babies are very young children. Some are so young that they can neither walk nor talk. It is therefore important to know a few things about the baby before you are left to take care of him or her.

Before your parents or guardians leave you with the baby, you must remember to ask a few questions. You should be told what to feed the baby on in case he or she falls hungry and needs food. Babies need food almost all the time but they only eat a little at a time. If you are left with milk, ensure it is not cold or very warm. Do not force the baby to drink all of it at ago because if you do so, what will you give her when she wants more? Since they eat very little, a baby will start crying if you try to force her to eat more than she needs. You will have put yourself in serious problem if you drink the remaining milk meant for the baby!

Be aware that the baby will need to sleep. You must know where you will take the baby to sleep because they cannot be awake throughout. Do not put a baby to sleep near an open window because the blowing wind could wake her from time to time. Make sure the baby is comfortable. You do not need to shake him/her up because he/she could wake up and start crying.

It is normal for the baby to wet her clothes so there should be dry clothes to change her in. The baby should first be washed before changing the clothes as failure to do this could make him/her start smelling and who could wish to carry a smelly baby?

When the baby is awake, he/she might play, choose items which are safe for him/her to play with. Do not leave the baby alone as he/she may crawl into a trough of hot water or a hot jiko. You know the kind of accidents these could cause. You must all along keep a watchful eye to avoid such even if you are doing some other work.

When your parents or guardians come back and find you are responsible and the baby is comfortable, you are likely to be rewarded.

I was going to untie the goats from the shrubs near the river when I bumped into Keti and Lewa. The moment I saw what they were carrying, my mind changed. In Keti's hand was a dead hare and it looked as if it had just been killed. I moved closer to them and confirmed that the animal was alive just about half an hour ago. Sharing that small carcass among the three of us was out of question due to its size. We had quick consultation among ourselves and I wasn't persuaded to drop the task I was going to do. They assured me it would be a matter of minutes and each of us would carry something home.

We had not gone far when Lewa suggested that we keep the 'load' up some tree to easen our movement. We obliged and started walking to the bushes where we knew hares were plenty. We scared away two in a short while but one didn't seem to be agile enough. We decided to track it as the other one had gone away at lightning speed. We managed to form a circle round where it had hidden. We accurately located the specific thicket it had gone into. With each of us ready for it with our weapons in hand, we closed in. The moment it attempted to escape, two clubs landed on it almost at ago and we celebrated as it threw its last kicks.

In our greed for the third prey, we decided to take this second one up the tree for storage. We left for a different direction where we expected to hunt down more hares, even antelopes. We were talking of each of us carrying home two or three carcasses when gradually, the sky above our heads started turning grey and trees swaying from one side to the other. This is when I remembered about the goats!

We broke into a run to the tree which had our treasure, one on top of the other but the moment we reached there, we stopped in our tracks. Up the tree was a fierce-looking leopard but no sign of either of our catch. This time round we didn't consult but took off helter-skelter and as if that's the signal the weather had been waiting for, heavy droplets of rain started pounding our heads. For once I realised hares can curse their killers.

When I reached where the goats were supposed to be, I got another shock. There was no sign of even one. I walked home in semi-darkness, worried, wet and shivering. I found the goats in their enclosure and guessed what had happened. No one talked to me as I made my way towards the fireplace, my clothes still dripping.

Anxiety is a mental health condition that overwhelms you with feelings of stress and worry. It can come due to certain triggers like emotional traumas or just hook itself onto any fears you may have; like not being able to provide for your family even when you have a secure, well-paying job.

When you're struggling with anxiety, it's not enough: to just tell yourself to stop being worried. It needs daily, unintentional habits that slowly help those seious feelings fade, along with therapy or medication in extreme cases. Anyone who has deal with this struggle of having an exaggerated fight or flight response to everything knows how molly, physically and exhausting it is.

An anxious brain usually jumps from one thought to another, mal ing it hard to know exactly how you are feeling and why you are feeling the way you do. You could be able to have some clarity which is like a mini therapy session. If you buy a diary or a journal, you can specifically use it to offload your emotions every day. Deep breathing exercises can also be of good use. It has amazing benefits for mental health. It will slow down your heart rate, which is a quick remedy when you're experiencing an anxious episode. Faraja had always been a shy girl. She did not like being the centre of attention. She always prefers to stay in the background where no one paid much attention to her. Even though she had a lot in her mind, she was often afraid to share her thought or to express her opinions and feelings.

The teachers who were aware of this tried to help her to come out of her shell. However, the more attention they paid to her, the more uncomfortable she felt. The other pupils knew this and sometimes they would tease her. At other times, they would turn all their attention to her when they wanted her to do something. She would give in easily, simply to avoid being the centre of attention.

One morning, the teacher of English Miss Tumaini gave them a spelling drill. She would call any of the pupils at random and asked them to spell a word on the whiteboard. The pupils spelt the words correctly. Then she called out Faraja's name. Suddenly, Faraja felt hot all over her body. She called out again and smiled. The smile made Faraja feel a little better. She stood and walked to the whiteboard. Miss Tumaini asked her to spell the word 'committee'. A hush fell over everyone because they all found it difficult to spell this word.

Faraja, on her part knew how to spell the word. She lifted the white board marker pen to the whiteboard ready to write the word. When she had written the first letters 'com', she panicked. She could not remember whether the next syllable was 'mi' or 'it' when she heard the class giggle, she was so tensed up that she wished the ground would open up and swallow her. At that instant, she forgot even the word that she was to spell. The teacher on realizing this warned the other pupils against laughing at her. She then gently repeated the word one more time. Faraja felt as though the cobwebs in her mind have been brushed off. This time she easily spelt the word correctly and confidently. "Well done!" said the teacher as Faraja walked back to her seat. She was feeling good about herself.

After classes, Miss Tumaini had a talk with Faraja.

"You are very unique and no other pupil in this school is like you," said miss Tumaini. Faraja felt very special when the teacher said those words. Read the passage below and use it to answer questions 39 to 50.

Performance in national examinations contribute to a great deal to one's future. In Kenya, there are national examination at the end of grade six, class eight and end of form four. Performance in these examinations determines the education path that one takes. This probably explains the jitters that parents, teachers and pupils get when the examination period comes during the end of academic year.

The world has become very competitive today. One has to work hard inorder to excel in any endavour such as examinations. One's performance in examinations has an effect not just on the candidate, but also on the candidate's parents, teachers and even peers.

Parents beam with pride when their children perform well in examinations. It is not uncommon to hear a parent say that the child is "just like the father or mother". Some parents even hold parties to celebrate the child's performance in examinations. Siblings and other relatives join in the celebrations because they have contributed to the pupils good performance in one way or the other.

Teachers are also very excited when they learn their pupils have performed well in the examinations. Their efforts in preparing the pupils for the examination have paid off. They therefore feel that they have succeeded in preparing the pupils for the next stage in education.

Peers also celebrate one's good performance. They would like to be associated with someone who has excelled in examinations. For other pupils in the school, the good performance presents them with proof that it is possible to excel in examinations. It provides them with a challenge to work hard so that they can perform even better in the national examinations.

This has led to a situation where everyone wants to be associated with top marks. In some schools, pupils, teachers and even parents spare no effort in ensuring that they succeed through honest hard work. They burn the midnight oil as they prepare for examinations.

The school fraternity cultivates an environment where each person works towards excellence.

Poor performance in examinations, on the other hand can be a cause of conflict. Parents may blame their children for not working hard enough. Some parents end up blaming the teachers or even the school administration.

There are also pupils who would do anything under the sun to get good grades without putting in much effort. To them, the end justifies the means. They end up cheating in the examinations because they have not studied hard enough.

This is often discovered and, sadly, their results are cancelled. They may go on to be irresponsible people who do not care about the consequences of their actions.

Read the passage below carefully and answer questions 26 to 38.

It was one of those sunny mornings when merely breathing seemed to be an event worth celebrating. I was in a particularly good mood as my mother had just given me Kshs 1000 for my daily expenses during the week that she would be away with my father in the countryside to visit my ailing grandmother. I was in seventh heaven of delight just contemplating the things I could do with the money I had. If I survived on bread and butter the whole week, I would have a little windfall of Kshs 800 to buy a computer game! I had always wished to acquire one. This thought wandered about in my mind for a while during the first lesson of the day which happened to have been physical education. As usual, a gruelling session of endless running and weight training. I could hardly catch my breath as I trudged back wearily to the classroom. Just before I could enter the classroom, I heard a loud commotion coming from inside the room and quickly rushed in. My classmates were gathered around George's table as the latter ransacked through books, stationery as well as some personal effects in obvious distress. George had always been a popular boy in class. Not only was he bright and well-mannered but he also came from a wealthy family that provided him with all he could ask for. Yet, he chose to share everything he had with us, never minding the fact that he always provided while we received.

As such, I rushed immediately to his side when I saw his anxiety. My classmates quickly told me that George had lost the money that he had brought as a donation to the welfare home that we were supposed to visit that afternoon. Understanding the situation, I proposed that we organise a search around the classroom and inform the class teacher as soon as possible. Taking my suggestions seriously, the class immediately took action. In no time at all, Teacher Pendo (our class teacher) rushed to the classroom to take control of the situation. She decided to run a search through everyone's bag. We quickly stood by our tables and emptied the contents of our bags onto the table. When it came to my turn, I diligently took out all my possessions for inspection. My wallet was the last item to be checked and as Teacher Pendo took out the Kshs 1000 from it, the class fell into a hushed shock.

Up till then, I had no idea that the amount lost was exactly Kshs 1000. Had I not been aware of my own innocence, even I would have agreed that the evidence was incriminating enough to confirm my guilt. Everyone stared at me in horror. Teacher Pendo was triumphant - pleased that her efforts at flushing out the thief had bome fruit. In a loud and harsh voice, she demanded to know where the money had come from. I told her the truth, which obviously fell on deaf ears. She appeared not to have heard anything that I had said, choosing instead to dwell on the 'facts' of the matter. She proclaimed loudly that I had been caught red-handed, dismissing my story as laughable in view of the fact that my family was not well-off and could not possibly afford to give me Kshs 1000. She also went on to elaborate on the evils of envy, implying that I had stolen from George because I was envious of him. All this while. I was struck dumb by her convincing words, amazed at the theories that she had come up with based on the Kshs 1000 found in my wallet. The situation was worsened by the unfortunate fact that my parents could not come forward to support my story. By this time, the whole class was shaking their heads mournfully at me, obviously in full accord with the teacher's allegations. I was stunned and terrified. I could feel the jaws of misguided justice closing around my neck and struggled against it. I kept protesting my innocence, trying to drown out their accusations with the sheer volume of my voice. But it was to no avail.

The principal was called in to handle the situation. He promptly decided that the evidence against me was damning enough to warrant an immediate suspension or expulsion once my parents returned from their trip. I was devastated. How could they decide on my guilt without even checking out my story? Even a phone call to my parents was considered too much trouble for the school. Instead, they chose to concentrate on consoling George and reassure his parents. I knew then that my average background was the reason why my words carried less weight than George's distress. It was a sobering experience, educating me in the realities of life. The entire week was spent in a state of confusion. I kept to myself a lot, choosing not to leave the house at all. I lost a great deal of weight, since I was living entirely only on bread and butter. The Kshs 1000 had been confiscated by the school as 'evidence', leaving me only the loose change around the house to buy things with. Humiliation and anger were my constant companions during that week. None of my classmates telephoned me, not even those who were my buddies. Obviously, the stink of being a thief was more potent than that of friendship.

My parents finally returned. They rushed down to clarify matters once they realised what had happened. The school authorities felt embarrassed and apologised ceaselessly. My parents and I forgave them but I opted not to return to that school. Why would I return to a school where everyone had branded me a thief? Not even my closest of friends or teachers gave me a listening ear. A school where wealth spoke louder than truth. I sought to transfer to another school. My parents too shared in my opinion.

Read the passage below and answer questions 39 to 50.

Kenya is one of the most fascinating countries to visit in Africa. There are a plethora of tourist attractions. The Maasai Mara National Reserve is undoubtedly the best tourist attraction in Kenya and one of the best in the world. It is located in Narok County in the south-western part of the country-close to the border with Tanzania. The reserve was named after the Maasai Community. Mara is an extension of the great Serengeti National Park of Tanzania. When combined, the two national parks form a wildlife corridor that is unequaled anywhere worldwide. The reserve receives over close to 500000 visitors each year. Tourists visit The Maasai Mara Game Reserve in large numbers in the dry months of July to October to witness the epic Great Wild Life Migration. During this migration, over one million wildebeests, Thomson's gazelles and zebras move from The Serengeti National Park to The Maasai Mara Game Reserve. As they do so, they have to cross the crocodile infested Mara River and deal with predators like leopard, lions. cheetahs and most dangerously, crocodiles. This migration is often perilous but quite necessary. Apart from the wildlife and beautiful landscape, another key attraction is an encounter with the Maasai warriors who live in the park. They are always eager to keep the tourists entertained with their rare dances.

Another popular tourist attraction in Kenya is Amboseli National Park. It is found close to the border of Kenya and Tanzania and at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. 'Amboseli' means 'salty dust" in Maasai language. The park is known to be dry though it is still a haven to many wild animals. Amboseli is one of Kenya's most visited national reserves. There is no better place to see wild elephants in large numbers than Amboseli National Park. One can also spot lions, leopards, cheetahs, gazelles, elands, impalas. waterbucks and giraffes. Over 600 species of birds can also be spotted in the park. One will also be captivated by the greet savanna grassland, mountain views and the opportunity to learn about the Maasai culture and customs.

The next popular tourist attraction in Kenya is The Tsavo National Park. It is by far the largest national park in Kenya. It covers approximately 4 percent of Kenya's total area. Tsavo is considered the best national park in Kenya for exploring the African wilderness in solitude. It is so large that it is divided into two sections - Tsavo East and Tsavo West. The park is characterized by volcanic hills, rivers, savanna plains and waterfalls.

Tsavo West receives more rainfall and for that matter has better scenery all year round. The key attractions in Tsavo West are the Mzima Springs and giant craters. Because of the thicker vegetation, the animals are more difficult to see as compared to Tsavo East which is relatively dry and hence with less vegetation cover. It is casier to spot park animals like elephants. Though dry, Tsavo East is served by Galana River which meanders around the sector. The river supports the growth of beautiful palm trees and other vegetation which brings life to an otherwise semi-arid region. Other important attractions in Tsavo East are the Mudanda Rocks, Aruba Dam, Lugard Falls and the Yatta Plateau. You can also spot a varieties of animals including Leopards, Buffaloes, Lions, Rhinos, Hartebeests, Bush babies, Lesser Kudu, Maasai Giraffes, crocodiles and hippos among many others not to mention the birds.

Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the most fascinating places to visit in Kenya. It is found in the middle of the country, 152 kilometres away from Nairobi. Most of the park consists of Savannah grasslands, woodlands, rocky cliffs and the largest euphorbia forest on the continent. Over 450 species of birds can be spotted here including one million flamingos, Goliath herons, African fish eagles, Pelicans and some species of eagles. Flamingos and Pelicans thrive on the salt waters of Lake Nakuru because of the rich algae and its relative isolation from humans. The greatest spectacle in the park is watching over one million flamingos take flight at once. Apart from flamingos, it is also possible to spot lions, warthogs. leopards, white rhinos, pythons and waterbucks.

I soon learned however that life for growing boy was not for boys with parents like mine. Although my mother had never had he benefit of a formal education herself, she was determined that I should be sent to school at the earliest opportunity. My father probably due to my mother's persuasive power was strongly in favour of this also. Even though I could often get around my father, I knew that once my mother's mind had been made up there was nothing I could do about it.

I found my first day in school so disappointing that I ran way, determined never to return. But my mother turned a deaf ear to my raging protest and quietly but determined dragged my by the arm each morning and deposited me in the classroom. Eventually, I realized that I had lost the battle and decided that as I was going to be forced to stay there, I might as well get to like it and do what I could to learn something. To my surprise, I soon found that I enjoyed my lessons and looked forward to going to school, even though we lived in fear and trembling of the teacher because of his firm and active belief in the adage - spare the rod spoil the child. I disliked being forced to do things against my will, for that not been accustomed to it, and I used to think what a paradise school would be it we were left in peace to do our studies without the presence of a school master.

All the various grades were housed in one room and the master used to teach a class at a time. It must have been a hard job for him, and we did not do anything to ease his lot. Luckily, I was keen on learning, so keen infact, that soon my only dread was that my father might one day be unable to afford the school fees, which at that time amounted to three pence a month. Because of this I started rearing a few chickens which I sold for six pence each. By this means I could not only help to meet school fees but I had money to buy books as well. In addition, any fears of my father's poverty were quite unfounded because I can never remember him denying any one of us anything we asked, and he was particularly generous where I was concerned.
