Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

These are diseases which are passed from one person to another person through sexual contact.

They are also called sexual transmitted diseases (STDs)

 STI   Cause and transmission    signs and symptoms
 Syphilis 
  •  caused by bacteria.
  • transmitted through: 
    1. Sexual intercourse.
    2. Infected mother to child at birth. 
    3. Deep mouth kissing.
    4. Sharing of person items.
  • Painless sore (chancre) on genitals.
  • Chancre is irregularin shape.
  • Sores in the mouth, lips, anus, fingers.
  • Painful rash all over the body after several weeks.
  • Hard lumps on the skin.
  • Loss of hair.
  • Cause paralysis and heart disease.
  • Madness and death if not treated.
 Gonorrhea 
  • Caused by bacteria.
  • Transmitted through:
    1. Sexual intercourse.
    2. Infected mother to child at birth.
    3. Contact with an infected person's fluids or genitals.  
  • Pain when passing out urine.
  • Yellowish or greenish discharge from penis.
  • Pain in the lower abdomen in females
  • Swelling of testicles.
  • Knees and other body joints swell
  • Infertility if not treated.
 Chancroid 
  • Caused by bacteria.
  • Transmitted through;
    • Sexual intercourse
  • Painful regular sore with a red border(bubo)
  • Painful and swollen lymph glands.
  • Sore on hand sand thighs.

 

NB: Genital herpes and HIV/AIDS are other STIs caused by virus.
