During the weeding season, only the very old or sick remained at liome. All the others went to weed. They would report to the farm together but the departure time was staggered due to age or other allocated duties. The young boys and girls would be released around eleven o'clock; the boys would then take the cattle to graze while the girls would prepare porridge and take it to the furm. Many people would live the farm around two o'clock. Their grandmother traditionally remained at home to take care of it till the others returned.
The boys were still grazing around home as they waited for pomidgo when they heard the screams, The dreaded tax collectors had been sighted in the neighbourhood as usual, everybody run out of their homes. If they got you at home, especially the able-bodied adults, you'd pay the tax instantly or they grab two or more of your healthy cocks. So the scream wasn't to seare the villagers but a waming for them to hide. The boys and girls would simply be asked where their parents were and they would promise to return another day
The boys ate their porridge and went their way. The girls too, carried the other portion to the farm and as they ate it out there, they reported about the tax-collectors. The parents were amused, imagining how the grandmother could have run to avoid being seen. They proceeded working up to around two o'clock when everybody cared the shoes back home. When they reached, they busied themselves, preparing lunch which they took soon after but grandmother was not yet seen. The door to her house was still partially open as ithad been when they arrived home, indicating that she was just around as chicken went in and out uniterrupted. They soon realised she was not in the house.
A team was soon assembled and dispatched to move from home to home, looking for her. When no positive report came after half an hour or so, they went to other homes, further away but this too, did not produce no desirable results. No one had seen grandmother from that moming, not even before the tux-collectors arrived and that was very abnormal.
A siceable crowd was already forming at home, some even wondering if she had left to visit her kin but this idea was instantly dismissed because of one obvious reason. They then thought of going to check along the riverbanks incase she could have gone there and missed a step. Three young men volunteered and were just leaving when one of the women was overcome by emotion and broke into a blood-curdling wail. The children joined in but as the others struggled to calm them down, grandmother's door suddenly opened wide and there she was, in her usual green frock.
Everybody became silent and shocked at the same time. Even before she could move two steps from her door, she asked, "Who has left us? I have not heard of a sick person here of late." As she trotted, looking puzzled and out of touch with reality, she realised no one was responding to her queries, "Or is it me! She added and it's this that made the whole group burst ut prolonged laughter

Chidren must be taught to work for the things they want. It could be the cell phone, video games, bicycles, toys and many others. When they are given everything they want by their parents, it is easy for them to develop a mindset of entitlement
The poor person mindset is to give their child whatever the child want if they can afford it. This gives a child a sense of entitlement. Later on, in employment, they may not understand why sometimes they have to work so hard for so little money and will eventually quit. Many wealthy parents teach their children to save up for what they need. In fact, Gordon Ramsey who owns and operates 40 Michelin starred restaurants all over the world worth over 152 billion says that he has no intention of leaving anything to his children. He adds, "It's definitely not going to them. The only thing I will give them is a 25% deposit on it flat but not the whole flat". This teaches them that despite having a head start in life, they have to put in the work.
If children want something that is not a basic need let them save from the little money you give them now and then. Many rich people teach their children that gambling is a bad practice in the use of money. A recent study conducted shows that 6% of the wealthy played the gambling game against 77% of the poor. Worse, the poor admitted to be playing the game regularly. This has made it become like a virus within their social network.
Children are consistently observing what their parents do. If the parents gamble, the children will likely be gamblers as adults. Rather than getting themselves into a dangerous situation, a parent can decide to introduce the children to the pitfalls of betting personally. Learning a few difficult lessons in an atmosphere is not safe and could actually be effective. You can let then try their hands at gambling and once they loss their money they will have learnt a good lesson.
The lesson with gambling is that every one thinks that they're going to win but in fact, takes to time at all for them to lose all their hard earned-money. They watch as it disappears into the air. If any of the children can end up with some money they should be told that those were exceptionals just as it in real-life.
- When a child wants to own a ball,
- he should find out how others got balls
- he should politely request his parents
- he needs to work his way out to get it

- Why do you think should children not be denied the basic needs?

- By leiting children save for what they want,

I started school late, at the age of eight years because my father was not keen on taking me to school. My mother was very keen on insisting that little education did no harm. By then I was ten years old. I was the last born in a family of four children; two boys and two girls. My brothers had finished their secondary education and were now working in the capital city. My sister got married at the age of eleven. From the time she married, I never saw her happy. Her face always looked sad and weary but not once did I hear her complain.
The journey to and from school took two hours. At 3.30pm the lower classes were released while the rest of the school stayed on until 4.30pm. We sat on tree trunks for we did not have desks. Two of the classrooms’ walls had gaping holes. The roof of the classroom was no more than thatch grass that was laid over rafters. It was badly built. On this particular day, Naitula’s book was missing and I found her searching for it everywhere. Then she found one of our classmates under a tree copying notes from it. Without uttering a single word, she forcefully snatched the book from him and after staring at him with a stern face, she waved at me to join her and we left for home. This caught the boy by surprise and he was left staring at us.
It was a rainy season and various wild flowers had bloomed. There were blue, yellow, red and white flowers. Wild fruits had ripened and birds feasted on them. One of my favorite fruits was the wild berry and these two were in plenty. We always spent some time on the way home picking them and also playing with the butterflies that had invaded the country. The path we took every day was so muddy that we kept wiping our feet on the wet grass. From where we were, we could see herds of cattle grazing on the plains in the distance. My father’s herd was grazing near our home.
Cows and goats are our main source of livelihood and a man’s worth is judged by the number of livestock one has. Women, children and animals are a man’s property. Woman’s work is to take care of the man, his children and his animals. My friend Naitula and I parted at the spot where the road branches to our different Manyattas.
On arriving home, I found my father with visitors and they were drinking a traditional brew from horns. Four were seated on his left side while one was on his right. I entered the hut and found a strange woman seated there so I greeted her. My mother, without looking at me asked, “Are you hungry?” “Yes, I have taken nothing the whole day.” She pointed to where a guard of milk was kept. She seemed to be avoiding my eyes and I asked her, “Why do you look sad today mother?”
The visitor smiled exposing her white teeth. She did not answer but said,” Go out and check on the goats and at dusk bring them home.

The old man found the children gathered at the same place. As soon as they saw him they asked him to tell them another story. The children were becoming a regular part of the old man’s daily life.
Without them in the evening he felt lonely. The evenings seemed long and boring. It is funny how habits develop, he thought. At first he could easily pass an evening all by himself and feel quite happy. Now he needed the company of the children for the evening to feel complete.
Funny, he thought to himself as he sat down on his favorite chair. It is just like that nasty habit of taking snuff that he had developed. At first he did it as a joke, just for fun. He felt he could stop the habit if and when he wanted to, but in time he found he had to have some snuff every few hours. If he did not, he would get all nervous and shaky. Now he was getting hooked on to being with the children.
“Oh well,” he said to himself, “at least that is a good habit to catch. It cannot make you lose your senses like Mzee Okong’o did”. He had spoken aloud without realizing it. “What happened to Mzee Okongo?” The children asked, all together. The old man let out a short laugh. He had been caught off guard by the children and he knew he had to tell them the story of Mzee Okong’o.
For Mzee Okong’o it had all started like a joke. It was during the wedding of his daughter many years before. During such ceremonies, the bride was required to give her father a horn of beer in front of friends and relatives. Having given her father the beer, the father would ask; “My daughter, are you asking me to drink this beer brought by these people? Are you telling me before, this crowd, that you will never ask me to vomit it”? This was meant to confirm in public whether the girl had completely made up her mind to marry the man. As her sign of agreeing to get married to the man whose family had brought the beer the girl would answer: “Yes, my father. I am asking you to drink it and I will never ask you to vomit it.”
If the father drank the beer, it showed he had agreed that his daughter could get married to the man who asked for her hand in marriage. Mzee Okong’o had thus made his first contact with alcohol after a very long time. He felt good and light headed after the first horn full and he asked for another second horn full more than the first.
In time, he was into his fifth and sixth horn of beer. Thereafter, he had lost count and slipped into a coma. He did not know when and how his guests had gone home. He could not remember what happened or what he might have said or done. Did he behave well? Did he abuse people in his speech? Did he pass urine in public? Did he fall or break wind loudly?

The trees swayed dangerously around them as papers and dust flew all around them. Suddenly, it become extremely windy and they knew there jwas going to be a storm.
“Let us hurry up” said Allan. They started running but Mike was left behind. He was not as fast as his brother. He ran as fast as his legs could carry him but could not keep up. Long time ago, in the village of Bobo, there lived two men. They were both hunters and they depended on what they caught in the forest for their meals. The younger one was Thomas, while the older one was called Bernard. One season, they went for months without catching any game in the forest. It was dry season and most animals had immigrated to other regions in search of food and water. Both men were very desperate as their only food reserves were running out and they did not know where to get food.
One day, as Thomas was hunting in the forest, he met an old man carrying two bags, one was large and another smaller one. The man appeared tired and thirsty and Thomas shared with him his little water supplies and offered to carry his bags for him. Thomas carried the old man's bags across the forest to his destination.
One day, the king got an idea. He decided to teach them a lesson in humility. He invited his ministers to his palace for a special banquet. A room was set aside for this purpose where they were to have their party. The day came and the ministers arrived in great style. Each seemed to out do the other in manner of dressing. Some came with special horse carriages made ofleather.
The older man offered Thomas one of the bags. Tom, being a humble man, chose the smaller one. He opened it and to his surprise, there were beautiful ornaments and gold jewellery. He looked around to thank the old man but realised he had disappeared.
When he returned home, he sold the jewellery and bought lots of food which he shared with his hunter friend. Bernard asked him where he got the money to buy food and Thomas told him. Bernard decided to go look for the old man the next day in the hope that he would also be showered with gifts.
On arrival at the same spot in the forest, Bernard found the old man seated. Bernard asked him what he would pay if he carried his bags. The old man refused to answer and asked for some water to drink instead.
Bernard had water in his bag but he lied that he didn't have any. The old man then told him where he was needed after Bernard took the bags and started carrying them. But he complained all the way that the bags were heavy, thinking he would be paid more than Thomas.
When they got to the man's destination, Bernard was asked to choose a bag. He greedily took the bigger bag and rushed home with it to brag to his family. However, on opening it, he realised that it was full of rocks and sand. He then realised that if only he hadn't been greedy, he might have got a better reward.

Pedestrians and cyclist make up half of the deaths in our roads. The other half is made up of passengers. Among those killed and injured have been children. Some parents fear travelling with children, dreading what could happen.
However, there are measures parents can take to keep their children safe on the road. This is especially so when using private cars. Here, they have control of the activities that take place in the car. Parents should therefore equip themselves and their children with the knowhow ca presenting and dealing with road accidents. If you must travel with your child in the front scat, you should ensure that the air bag is turned off. The air bag could seriously injure the child during an accident. Aparent should only consider allowing a child to use an adult seat belt when they attain a height of 135 centmeters and above. If the adult seat belt does not lie on the child's hips, chest and shoulder but rather lie on their tuinmy and neck, the parent should continue keeping them in their car seat. Children should never jump, stand or play on their seat when a vehicle is moving. In addition, they should not walk on the seat when the vehicle, especially a bus, is moving. When buying a car seat, parents should bear in mind the price, comfort and the child's height and weight.
When walking, parents should teach their children to use paths and pavements. They should learn to use traffic lights and pedestrians' walk. They should always put down whatever they are holding, look right, left and right again before crossing the road. They should learn to make eye contact with drivers and watch out for vehicles that may be reversing or turning. A reversing driver may fail to see small children if they are behind the car or are below the height visible from the car's side mirror. Children's band should be held in car parks just as on roads. Once upon a time, there lived a gentle mouse in the countryside. A !though he occasionally encountered trouble, he enjoyed the peaceful life in the countryside. There was plenty of food and he had numerous places to hide whenever he smelt danger. One day, lie countryside mouse invited his friend who lived in a distant town to spend a few days with him in Lhe countryside. The friend honoured the invitation and was received with open arms upon his arrival. The two friends shared exciting stones about their homes and life in general. The host served his guest a variety of sumptuous dishes. The town mouse enjoyed the meal and expressed his gratitude'. He had eaten to his fill besides enjoying some really nice local drinks.
Although the town mouse treasured the hospitality he got from his friend, he felt life in the countryside was rather boring. There was no entertainment of any kind. There was no electricity and darkness reigned supreme at night, Furthermore, the entire neighbourhood appeared d.ull and untidy. He preferred the excitement that the town provided. His friend had asked him to spend a fortnight in the countryside but he felt he missed the fun that characterised life in town. A couple of nights was enough. He opted to return to his home. Before he left, he asked his host to visit him the next weekend. The countryside mouse promised to pay his friend a visit at his earliest convenience. He assured the town mouse that he would bring him some fruits and vegetables from the countryside since he knew such foods were scarce in towns.
Eventually, the day of the visit came. The countryside had been looking forward to the day. This would be his maiden trip to the urban centre. He prepared himself and dressed in his best attire. He was dressed to the nines. Having packed his luggage, set off just after the morning meal. The journey took him roughly five hours. When he arrived in town, he was both fatigued and starving. His host picked him from the bus terminus and took him home. The countryside mouse was greatly amazed at what he saw. Flis friend lived in a big house, in the heart of the city. He lived especially in a banquet hail, where dozens of delicious dishes were served to a party of revellers and other guests, He was green with envy. He wished he got a chance to five in such a magnificent house. The food he was served was more delicious than any other food he had ever eaten. His mouth watered the moment food was brought to table.
While the two mice were enjoying a finger-licking meal, something unexpected happened. The barking of dogs rent the air. The countryside mouse was alarmed. He knew what such sounds meant. He would have scampered for safety had his host not assured him that his safety was guaranteed. Suddenly, the door of the banquet hail flung open. A party of dancers, together with four huge dogs entered the room. The two mice were frightened beyond measure. They jumped off the dining table and hid themselves in a far corner of the room.
When the things calmed down and the dancers went away with their huge dogs, the two friends came out of the hiding, still trembling with great fear. The country mouse bidding 'good-bye' to his friend said, if this is the fine way of living in the city, l would best prefer to have only my simple barley bread in the countryside. While there my safety is guaranteed i don't want to

Read the following passage and then answer questions 26 to 38.
They were yelling behind me and I was frightened. "I have to run fast." Bondi told himself. He vowed never to allow the blood thirst crowd to catch him. He flew past some hawkers; some of the hawkers dropped their goods and fled out of his way. Some courageous ones tried to throw anything they could find at him. At this time, he knew his life was hanging on a razor's edge. He knew too well that if he doesn't run very fast then the crowd would not spare him. The mob was determined to catch him. He turned right into a dark alley and the mob lost track of him. He had escaped death yet again by whisker. His speed, luck and knowledge of streets had saved his neck.
Why was Bondi running away? You see, Bondi had been walking quietly behind a young woman going as he goes about his usual business. She was smartly dressed and had a nice handbag that matched the colour of her attires. Then she tumed and saw Bondi. Maybe she thought Bondi was about to snatch her handbag, she started to shout at the top of her lungs, "Thief! Thief! Help me!" When Bondi saw her staring at him and pointing in his direction, Bondi realized she thought he was a thief. A small crowd was gathering as curious onlookers sought to satisfy their seemingly insatiable curiosity. Bondi didn't need a sixth sense to guess what was likely to happen. Knowing crystal clearly that no one would give him a chance to explain himself, he took to his heels at a dare devil velocity. He had to save his neck at all costs. Are you wondering why everyone is suspicious of Bondi? Come to think of this. A street boy, dressed in tatters, deriving his food from the garbage and of course sniffing glue! Don't you think he is scary? Nevertheless, does it make him a criminal? It is such a pity. All his friends are street children. As a matter of fact they are his only family. The terrns „father" and mother are alien to him. But why should the public treat all the street children with suspicion? Must they check their pockets every time a street child pass? Do they deserve to be an object of insults and stones? They, too, have a right to live.

Read the following passage then answer questions 39 to 50.
Although I was born and brought up in the countryside, I spent most of my time in the city. However, I have not found the city life as appealing as the countryside's. There are countless reasons why I would rather spend the rest of my life in the rural areas.
First and foremost, the clean and fresh air of the village makes one feel healthy and refreshed at all times. It is relaxing and pleasant to enjoy the pure air wafting with the exciting fragrance of fresh flowers and trees. It is possible to take an evening strollin the woods. This is unlike in the cities that are crowded most of the time. People are more worried of the traffic jam that characterises the city roads. By the time commuters get home, they are so tired that they have no time for a stroll. As a matter of fact, who would enjoy having a stroll in overcrowded streets where human beings compete with automobiles for space? Besides, the air is rather polluted hence resulting in strange ailments.
Secondly, people living in the countryside feel safer than the city dweliers. The city dwellers are in a state of fear every day. City dwellers are exposed to violent deaths caused by careless drivers and thoughtless motorcyclists. Furthermore, in the past few years, the crime rate in cities has increased to such a degree that people are afraid to even walk in the streets for fear of falling victim to a snatch thief, a gun-wielding gangster or a rapist. While there are cases of crime in the villages, they are not as serious as they occur in the cities.
In the countryside, people can walk freely and confidently both day and night without being attacked by anyone. In fact, in the streets you will come across friendly, helpful neighbours who are all smiles and full of warmth, unlike the unfriendly city dwellers. When there is a function, happy or sad, all the villagers are there to lend a helping hand: something that is quite unheard-of in the cities.
People living in the countryside are closer to nature. In the village, you are woken up by the singing of birds rather than by the irritating noise from the traffic; that is quite common in urban areas. Homes in the countryside are surrounded by nature which has a soothing effect on both the mind and the body. In the rural areas, you do not have to leave your home to feel closer to nature because here, nature comes to you. It is common to see wild animals like monkeys, hares and antelopes roaming about.
The fact that people living in the countryside are able to produce their own food makes life cheap and casy Why would someone have to buy vegetables and fruits from the grocer if he can grow his own? People eat fresh foods hence are not prone to lifestyle diseases like cancer and diabetes.
Time tends to run more slowly in the countryside which takes away a great deal of stress that is experienced by city dwellers who are always in a hurry to get somewhere.
- Which statement is true according to the first sentence?
- The writer likes life in the countryside.
- The writer's parents live in the city
- The writer spent more years in the city.
- The writer had a job in the city.
- The word fragrance as used in the passage can be best replaced by
- scent
- dour
- aroma
- flavour
- Why is it not possible to have a stroll in the city?
- People are busy
- The air is stale
