Many years ago, baboon was the most boastful ape. He was fast and could jump with ease from one tree to another. Whenever the animals went out to steal crops from man's shamba, baboon would never be caught. He always laughed at his cousins; the monkeys and chimpanzees who would be caught and whipped mercilessly.
"Oh, poor you! How would you be as slow as a tortoise? You should learn to be fast like me whenever you sense danger," he would lease them. The animals once went to steal maize from man's shamba, baboon quickly ate to his full and took a few maize cobs home. He then alerted man from the top of a tall tree. "Hurry up, some thieves are feasting on your maize! Man hurried to the shamba before the animals could escape and shot several of them with poisoned arrows. Baboon watched the drama from the top of the tree with glee.
With time, the other animals got fed up with baboon's behaviour. They avoided him and rarely talked whenever he was within earshot. One afternoon, baboon found monkey peeling a ripe banana, his only meal for that day. Without uttering a word, he grabbed the banana from the monkey. He quickly ate it and when he was done, threw the peel at the poor monkey's face. Shell-shocked, monkey stared at baboon for a moment before asking," surely, why did you do that
"To teach you to be fast when eating delicious bananas," baboon replied. Monkey walked away feeling humiliated as baboon laughed loudly at him. He told other animals what baboon had done to him and they were upset. They decided to put an end to his unacceptable behaviour. They held a sliding competition and gathered on top of a steep hill. The competition involved sitting on the bark of a tree and sliding down a steep hill. The one who would take the shortest time to slide down the hill would emerge the winner
Baboon was upbeat about the competition and boasted he would be the first. Eager to show off his prowess, he sat on the hard bark of a free and made himself comfortable. As he was able to take off, monkey pulled the bark from under his bottoms as chimpanzee shoved him down the hill. Thinking that the animals had done this by mistake, he screamed for help but his pleas fell on deaf ears. The sharp stones and thorns along the steep path were unbearable. They bruised his bottom so much that they felt as though he was sitting on hot charcoal. His effort to hold on to vegetation along the path were frustrated by the animals who continued shoving him downhill. He screamed in pain as other animals joined monkey in mocking him, "are you not the toughest of us all?" they asked.

Kenya's weather patterns are changing. The change in rainfall patterns has a huge impact on Kenya because 98 percent of the country's agriculture is rain fed. The major challenge that farmers face is timing. It is crucial for them to know when rains start and stop so that they know when to plant or harvest their crops. Most parts of Kenya experience two rain seasons, March to May's long rains and October to December's short ones. The months of June to August are mainly cool and dry over most parts of the country, except for some areas in the Western region that get rain.
Hot and dry conditions are normally observed in the entire country in January and February. In recent years, delay in the coming of rains has been the norm. In other years, rains came on time but then stopped earlier than anticipated. Such lead to massive crop failures.
Other than rainfall patterns, studies show a reduction in the amount of rainfall, especially during the March to May long rains period. This is a worrying trend; given that this is the main planting season.
The changes in Kenya's rainfall pattern have been linked to climate change. Global warming is known to cause an overall warming in the atmosphere and the ocean, resulting in complex shifts that affect our planet's weather and climate systems. Research shows that rainfall is reducing while temperatures are on the rise in Kenya, as is the case in other countries in the Horn of Africa.
In the case of Kenya's delayed rains, another culprit has also been identified; cyclones. It is normal for cyclones to happen on the Southern African Coast between February and March. But their magnitude is dictated by sca surface temperatures. These warm as a result of increased emission of green-house gases in the atmosphere leading to global warming. This means the intensity and frequency of cyclones is likely to increase.
The most recent cyclones was Idai and it occurred in the Western Indian Ocean in March last year.
The cyclone caused a depression - low pressure zone - in the ocean, cutting off moisture from flowing from the Southern hemisphere to East Africa. Cyclone Idai delayed the Northward progression of the rain-bearing low pressure zone, also known as the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone.
This limited the moisture flow from reaching Kenya, leading to the observed seasonal rainfall delay that strengthened anomalous dryness from early mid-March last year. A combination of failed rainfall and the observed high temperatures adversely impact agricultural activities across many parts of the country.

It was break time, a favourite time mostly for boys to play and do all sorts of things the classroom discipline couldn't allow them to. The girls, on the other hand, spent theirs in groups, sharing whatever whoever carried from home or one was able to buy. It was not even possible to tell, among the girls who had and who hadn't. They sat under trees scattered in the school compound and by the time the bell signaling the end of break rang, they would rise and rush into their classrooms. Among the boys, it was a totally different story.
The boys had invented what looked like a game yet it was not. As soon as the break-bell went, they shot out through the classroom doors like arrows. The run went towards where specific boys headed as already, they were known to have money and would definitely buy something. Dori sold doughnuts under the mango tree by the school hedge. It was sold on first-come-first-served basis and based on how strong you were too. There was no line to follow so if you could elbow your way through to reach Dora, you would be served instantly. Not all those who went to buy the doughnuts were certain to get. With your money, you still needed luck, strength and some push to get it, the boys seemed to enjoy it.
Immediately after buying it, the part two of the game would commence. The buyer would take off like a thief with a 'swarm' of boys in hot pursuit, with a sole mission of begging. He would cover as much a distance as he could to shake off the clumsy ones. At times, the run could cover half the school compound then, the buyer would stop abruptly. A number would be far behind, panting and checking if there was another nearer group to relocate to and that is when in a haste, the buyer would dish out one, two or three of the doughnuts to reward his friends' to share as he crammed the remainder into his mouth at ago. The sharing would be instant as they would be moving to try their luck in other groups already in flight.
This is what Juma did and he squeezed three whole doughnuts into his mouth. Ile had no time to chew them as many others were already running after Keri. It was after three or so minutes that he fell down but the others, not sure of why it had happened, burst into loud howls of laughter.
A different group, due to curiosity, immediately went to where he was lying. He looked as if he was suffocating and so they wasted no time. They carried Juma straight into the staffroom and reported that he had fallen down and had stopped talking. Knowing the mischief boys normally involve themselves in all the time, one of the teachers ordered them to take him outside under the mango tree. He quickly turned the victim to face downwards. Then, he gave Juma a gentle blow at the upper back. A ball of doughnut fell from his mouth and he started gasping for breath. In two or so minutes, his eyes opened and shock was written all over his sweating face. Read the passage below and then answer questions 39 to 50
Many people have seen waste water but hardly any of them can give a proper definition of what it is. Waste water is water that is receivable by the ground and forced to flow away to a place no one cares about. However, scientifically, it's water that has gone through a process and is no longer attractive to the original user. Waste water management is the process of understanding the characteristics of water, treatment and restoring the water from available contamination.
Presently, the world faces a water quality crisis resulting from continuous population growth, urbanisation, land use change, industrialisation, food production practices, increased living standards and poor water use practices and waste water management strategies. This has a direct impact on the biological diversity. It disrupts the life support system on which a wide range of sectors from urban development to food production and industry. Waste water therefore should be managed well as even aquatic animals and those in the wilderness depend on the same source.
The United Nations wanted this improved and increase coverage in terms of access to improved toilet facilities. More attention should be paid towards ensuring that waste streams are adequately collected and treated before being discharged into the environment. Strangely, worldwide waste water treatment is failing. As a result, the majority of waste waters are discharged without any form of treatment. This spreads disease to humans and damaging lives of both plants and animals outside there.
Moreover, dirty water is a key factor in the rise of pollution in lakes, oceans and seas. This is because of increased urban population which is to double in forty years or so. Already, most cities lack adequate waste water management due to poor or lack of proper sewerage infrastructure,
Kenya's rapidly growing capital city is facing a very serious problem with the supply and quality of its water supply, forcing people to get water from unsafe and very dangerous or poisonous sources.
This is very different from early years where more than 90% of the population in Kenya's urban areas had access to clean water. Currently, it is estimated that just 50% of Nairobi's four and a hall million population residents have access to piped water. This is because of the demand which is too high to meet. It is higher than the supply due to other factors, such as population growth, inability to supply enough water, poor distribution network and climate problems.
Some Nairobi residents lament that the city receives around 50 million litres of water per day but Sadly, by midnight, it is all wasted. By morning, water is needed and this strains the source. This important to create a culture of waste water recycling so that all the wastewater can be raised.
- The number of people who can define waste water
- cannot easily be estimated.
- is as many as those who see it.
- is smaller than those who have seen it.
- almost the same as those who have seen it.
- Waste water is receivable by the ground because
- no one has any use for it.
- it can be used for irrigation.
- it is directed there by the users.
- the ground absorbs anything poured there.
- The MAIN importance of waste water management is to

- safeguard its safety.
- make sure it is absorbed into the soil
- keep quantity of water on earth safe.
- The water crisis currently faced by people worldwide is
- caused by poor recycling of waste water.
- due to consistent change of weather.
- as a result of the reduction of water.
- due to man's several uses of water.
- If waste water is managed well.
- there would be frequent floods during rails.
- there would be more fresh water than needed
- lives of aquatic and wild animals could he spared
- there is likely to be increase in water levels.

- used
- excess
- recycle

Sending children was always done in more than two. It was either to act as security of the other or to provide company. Likewise, it was for us to report if any of us misbehaved along the way or at the place we had been sent to. So, when Luka was sent to where his eldest sister was married, he resisted. It was a long distance away and one was not expected to return before evening. Upon refusing, his mother called Lowe and I to provide the company. Still, he had to be rebuked and threatened before he reluctantly agreed to go.
I can’t remember what information Luka was to relay to his sister. Naturally, children shared such information so that should any of them forget the others would still remind the bearer: We did not ask Luka - what it was because, anyway, he did not look to be in the moods to talk to us until we were some distance away from home. Then, slowly, he started joining us in throwing stones at birds and making fun of cyclists who rode creakily past us. We never made mistakes in the fun we made for we knew the consequences of being too loud.
We walked, ran and laughed. It is this combination of activities that actually made us reach faster. Luka's sister had just come from her routine wedding when we appeared at the home. She was happy to see us and anyway, she had always been. To her, we were all her brothers and one of us was closer to her than the rest. In a very short time; she had prepared tea which we took with the reddish sweet potatoes.
As we were hungrily taking the tea, she disappeared. Immediately, Luka started urging us to leave before she returned but we told him that would be very bad manners. It did not take long, however, before she reappeared, carrying some fresh fish from the lake. She embarked into the preparation as if she knew what was in the mind of one of us.
Outside, we were expected to be playing in the compound but that was far from it. Luka kept urging us to leave because it was getting late. We wondered whether it was getting really late since we had not been ordered to return home by a specific time. The sister heard us arguing and rushed out. She shouted angrily at Luka and asked him to leave alone if he wanted to but the rest of us would wait for the meal. In that furious mood, she told Luka that he was not being tied there.
Somehow, the scolding drum med some sense into Luke's head. Food was soon brought and we ate so hungrily that one would have wondered where the tea we had just taken had gone to. We got satisfied but not at the same time. Luka remained eating alone, long after we had stopped and we kept stealing glances at the latest turn of events curiously. The sister did not hide her surprise.
All along the way back, we walked in two groups, Luka ahead of us and we trailing. He talked to neither of us and never looked back. We were comfortable that way for Luka had had double that day.

Read the passage below and then answer questions 39 to 50.
If you have ever gone to the Coast, then you must have seen the coconut tree. This is because they grow everywhere from people's doorsteps, city streets to the wild uncultivated areas. It grows well in tropical areas around the world. It grows very tall and without any branches, sometimes up to thirty metres high, with the leaves measuring four to six metres long.
The coconut, it is said, owes its name to the 16h century Portuguese sailors who thought the small holes on the fruit resembled a human face. Therefore, they name the fruit Coco which means Grinning face in Portuguese language. Although it is called a nut, coconut technically belongs to the fruit family called drupes, which includes other fruits like peach, plums and cherries.
It is common to see some coconut vendors slice the top of a coconut, put a straw in it and have one drink. This is done in the early growth stages when the coconut has a lot of water that can be consumed directly. The refreshing drink contains sugar, dietary fibre, proteins, anti-oxidants and minerals. However, the water is not the same as coconut milk. Coconut milk is squeezed from the blended, grated or chopped chunks of the white fleshy part of the fruit and also referred to as coconut meat. The meat is high in milk fat and is a popular additive in rice dishes.
Coconut meat is also pressed for oil. The coconut oil has multiple uses - from cooking to being used as body massage oil. Since coconut tree grows very tall, wood from its trunk was preferred traditionally for building houses. The wood's straightness, strength and ability to resist salt made it a reliable building material for boats, bridges and houses in the tropics.
If you thought that that is all a coconut is worth, you will be pleasantly surprised to learn that the coconut leaves too have many uses. Some of these are making brooms, weaving baskets and mats or dried and used as thatch for roofing houses. Such roofs are called Makuti-thatched roofs.
Although coconut is a drupe fruit, it does not get dispersed by animals like the rest of its family (it's too high up anyway). Instead, the coconut palm disperses its seed using the ocean. Coconut is very buoyant (can float easily) and highly water resistant and can travel very long distances across the ocean.

Read the following passage and answer questions 26 to 38.
The theft had been on for some time and the villagers had complained enough about the loss of green maize from their farms. They had tried at number of tricks to catch the thief or thieves without a solution. The only change that kept happening is where the maize was stolen and when it happened. The villagers who had fallen victim had lost hope but those who had not known their turn was soon coming as the unknown person was busy ripping off the cobs and leaving
the stacks standing. Where he sold them, no one could tell but they really wished to know.
It was not the first meeting the village elder had called to discuss this. He had issued both threats and warnings but they bore no fruit. At one time, he said such act could easily end up with a fatality. He gave clear guidelines on how and when people should harvest the green maize and how to sell them so that people don't suspect one another. He also advised that it would be better if they let the maize dry on the farm first before harvesting in the same meeting. Vigilante groups were formed to help keep security and stem the theft.
Not even one day passed after the meeting. The thief continued the very following day as if the meeting has served no purpose and looked as if it was bound to continue. All the measures the village elder had put in place seemed to be failing. The vigilante groups seemed to be headed nowhere but disbanding them would even be worse.
Unknown to almost everyone, one of the thieves was always attending the meeting and participating actively in passing. He then passed all resolutions to his small gang who planned what to do as they continued with their mission. He made arresting the thieves utterly impossible; even getting a suspect was becoming too complex. When vigilante groups were being constituted, he offered to be in the group. Since all the young men present volunteered to be part of it, he easily got himself in the team. However, it was this that helped to coordinate activities of stealing, and continue remaining mysterious.
It was this same person making the arrest of these thieves an uphill task. By patrolling with the vigilante groups and the fact that he was hilarious and very trustworthy, even at family level, he managed to dupe everybody. He would convince the others to go towards the bridge when he knew his small gang was heading to the hilly area. He would call off the patrol at a time he knew their time to start their ‘job’ was about. The cobs would be ripped from the plant and put in the sisal sack each of them carried. This was done for two reasons they all knew. The sacks were transported by two cyclists who knew where to deliver them at agreed charge
Sila had become irritated and decided to guard his farm on his own. He went there without alerting anyone and sat in a thicket by the edge of the farm. He was determined to wait till whatever time for the thieves. He was willing to wait even up to morning but by around a half past two o'clock, awoken by some rustling or leaves. Some people were walking towards where he was! One of the cracked a joke and they all burst out laughing. The laughter was not the problem; it was that one of them had a very unmistakable way of laughing. It was Kure!
The stealing was done in an organized way. The thieves kept ripping the cobs and throwing into the sacks on their backs they moved together, each covering two lines and moving very fast. When they were about to accomplish their mission Sila screamed and the thieves got a shock of their lives. Their sacks dropped and they took off at lightning speed. With his sharp ‘panga’ in hand, Sila dragged the sacks to a different location then he too moved to hide elsewhere and waited for dawn.
As the sky was clearing, he took the path that the thieves had taken and recovered the shoes they had left behind as they fled. In the afternoon another meeting was called but this time round Kure was absent. As Sila started giving his version what had happened to him, the gathering demanded that he produces the sandals he had picked and when he did so, all eyes turned towards the village elder. The sandals belonged to Kure, his own son! There was murmuring for some time and when it dropped, he ordered five young men to go and look for Kure and bring him before the elders.

Read the passage below and the answer questions 39 to 50
It is true that many people don't get the same treatment at their work place. This is a very normal thing in any company or organisation. It happens that some people follow instructions faster and others too slow to learn how to do work more accurately, even if they are employed by others on the same day. This is what is called favoritism and is something that as an adult, you have encountered or will encounter at some time in your career no matter how small your office or work place is.
According to a recent research carried out about 90% of high profile business executives do confirm that favoritism exists and is the basis for some employee promotions. A huge percentage of them admit to have practiced favoritism themselves to reward employees who seem to reward harder than others. Sometimes, managers do it innocently, perhaps just because they like working with someone who works and reasons like them.
At times, it can worsen when to bigger changes like being the only employee who gets nominated to attend meetings where allowances are given. This happens where there are other equal or more qualified employees. They get pay rise, promotions and other benefits while others remain watching.
Favoritism at work is not entirely illegal. Your boss could just be seen to repeatedly excuse distracting behaviour from a particular employee and never anyone else. There is nothing you can do about it. However, when it contributes to discrimination and unfair treatment on the basis of religion, race, tribe, gender, ability or even nationality it constitutes to criminal offence.
It is hard to successfully climb the career ladder. You have to put in extra effort to outdo your colleagues but in the ends, you get overlooked in favour of someone who is just some sort of a ‘father's pet’. In some careers, employees may be discriminated against as a form of retaliation. This is seen in form of people who reveal secrets on what is going on in the manager's absence. Such people are retained even if they make obvious mistakes while others, who have other reports made secretly, got dismissed instantly.
As an employee, avoid jumping to conclusions. Try to find out some facts or what causes some situations. Digging back into issues by demanding explanations as to why your co-worker has been given this and that won't help.
Probably, your output has been reduced by you putting your energy elsewhere as others work. Continue to do your job as you investigate even when you are demoralised. Stay positive and remember, talking negatively about your boss and co-workers will add no value to you.
- What do many people lack at workplace?
- Competition
- Satisfaction
- Fairness.
- Security
- The MAIN reason why people don't get same treatment at work place is

- it means you should retire or resign
- it is strange and should be controlled.
- It shows that employers don't value others
- it should not bother you.
- About 90% of employees are promoted on favoritism because
- they seem to put in more effort than others
- they give secret information about others.
- employers need to be rewarded at work.
- the remaining 10% are too few to bother employers
- By saying managers practice favouritism innocently, the writer means they,
- practice it without harming anyone.
- they don't seem to know what to do.
- do not practice it with an ill motive.
- don't tell employees how they do it.
- If an employer practices favouritism he's should ensure
- he does not talk to other employees about it.

His aunt therefore decided to raise Maina as her own son. Though she had sons and daughters of her own, she loved and cared for Maina in equal measure. He loved her back as well.
Every morning, Maina woke up early before the first cock crowed and went to the well to fetch water, because his aunt was too old to fetch the water herself. He also cleared the house After this, he rushed to school and he was always the first one to get there. He arranged the classroom chairs and desks. All the teachers liked him because he was responsible.
One day, Maina did not go to school. All teachers and pupils got worried sick. Maina had never missed attending school. This was strange. The head teacher, Maina's class teacher and his Science teacher decided to go to his home. Science was his favourite subject. Not that he hated other subjects. No, not at all. He had a lot of interest in Science because he aspired to become a doctor to treat and help the sick. Had he had money to take his mother to a reputable hospital he would. Maybe just maybe, she would have lived longer. She would be there with him, by his side. When they got there, they found that Maina was being taken to hospital.
"Maina is sick," his aunt explained". I called my neighbour to help me to take him to hospital.
Maina's head teacher and teacher were sorry to hear that. They wished him a quick recovery and promised to visit him. After a week, Maina had fully recovered and went back to school. The doctor had warned him against over working himself and eating unwashed fruits. Maina loved eating fruits so much, especially on his way back home in the evening. Upon arrival home, he would wash utensils, prepare supper and embark on doing his homework. By the time he retired, he would be too tired to lift anything.
I am sure you are asking where his aunt's children were? Two of them were out of the country studying and the first born was working in the city where he lived with his family. His family occasionally came to visit them.

Read the passage below and answer questions 39 to 50.
Foodstuffs are basically divided into carbohydrates (mainly starch and sugars) protein and fats from animals or plants sources. Often, one particular source contains more than one constituent but may be predominantly carbohydrates, proteins. Vitamins and minerals, though not providing direct energy, are essential for many bodies functions. They are usually required in relatively small amounts and are obtainable from the primary food sources unless one is eating highly refined foods or there is an inability within the body to extract them from these foodstuffs. Under these conditions, supplementation becomes necessary. Therefore it is important to eat fresh wholesome foods grown in places with no known minerals deficiencies or excesses.
dy's energy requirements and supplies all the essential building blocks. These include nine amino acids (from proteins, one fatty acid (from fats) and glucose (from carbohydrates). The body has an in-built mechanism for converting types of food into different building blocks, those listed above, which together with vitamins and minerals have to be acquired from the diet.
It should be appreciated that, while food is only eaten at certain times, the body requires energy continuously. Thus, the composition of a meal should be such that it can provide energy immediately and also in a sustained manner. Carbohydrates provide energy in the short term, proteins in the medium term and fats in the long team. The same process is replicated in the body when it is using up stored food. The type of activity one is involved in also influences energy needs, people leading actual lives require more energy than those with a sedentary lifestyle. Children, pregnant women and breast feeding mothers also require more energy
The biological value of food is also important. Animals' protein has a higher biological value Act than plant protein and hence, a small portion may suffice. Unsaturated vegetable fats are also safer to use compared to animal fats. Generally, a balanced diet should supply fifty percent of energy requirements from carbohydrates, thirty percent from proteins and twenty percent from fats.
Though associated with good factors, the use of mega-doses of vitamins cannot be a substitute for energy requirements. It is especially not advisable to have a high intake of fats, soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and foods with high minerals content, especially of sodium and potassium. Where deficiency exists due to the soil type or food preparation style, supplementation via manufactured foodstuffs for example, iodized salt or fortified bread and milk, may do as a substitute.

- provides energy and essential body building blocks
- provide minerals and vitamins to correct deficiency
- takes care of bodies functions
- provides the feel-good factors to the body
- The body's in-built mechanism converts types of foods into
- energy, body building blocks, vitamins and minerals

Teacher Nicholas was also our class teacher. He had a rather difficult surname and hence his request to refer to him simply as Nicholas. He was a piteous-looking, bespectacled man ever in a brown corduroy coat. After bombarding our brains with figures and formulas, he always retreated to his desk at the front of the classroom where he slumped and dozed off only to be awoken by the jingle of the bell. Of all the teachers, he was our favourite because he never administered corporal punishment
Before today's class, teacher Nicholas had mentioned that we needed to think of subjects we hoped to specialize in, in the coming year. There had followed a heated discussion about the merits of various careers.
I had no distinct talent, never felt inclined to any career There was a girl in our class who constantly dreamt of being a nurse. Two classmates had connections to make it to the armed forces. As army generals, with big guns, our homeland could rest safe and secure. A pious student behind me in class was sure of his calling. Even before finally mouthing it we had already nicknamed him .Pope', his deskmate fantasized at being a farmer, a horticulturist to be precise, planting carrots and cabbages. But my future career was just a plain plateau where the horizon was hazy and vague. A few times my mother had tried to help by compiling a list of what she considered to be distinguished professions. From this menu she had read, top to bottom, some familiar and alien names of occupations and watched keenly for a flicker of interest. After she read the last one and I remained still uninterested, she sighed and resignedly. "I guess the time will come."
As much as I did not know what I wanted to be when I grew up, there was one thing I was definite about.! knew what I never wanted to be an accountant. I lost my best friend when he dropped out of school. His father who was an accountant had used his position to embezzle funds from his employer then deserted his family.
"Well, find out what you do best and then work hard at it," the teacher was saying as his voice dragged me back to present. "Another way of finding your life's longing is to read widely: reading will open your eyes to the vasiness and wonders of life's possibilities. Do you like reading?"
I nodded after I realized that the question was directed at me..
"I can help you recognise and develop your own potential," he said. But from now on, he added, paramount in my pursuits, was to perform exemplary in class. With great firmness of purpose which he knew I possessed, I positively could count on his encouragement to improve my academic profile. Was I ready to do that? I hurriedly replied in the affirmative.

Of all the melon varieties, the watermelon is the most popular among consumers and farmers in the country
There is also the sweet melon, but the growing of this crop has not picked up partly because many farmers are not familiar with it. yet it has huge potential
Sweet melon belongs to the cucurbits family, just like watermelon. The varieties grown in Kenya include Safari F1. It is normally green, and during ripening, it turns light grey or yellow,
The fruit has several health benefits, such as reducing the anti-inflammatory properties, oxidative stress and kidney cell damage. It also has cancer preventive antioxidants. The melon seeds are rich in fat and protein. The fruits have lower sugar levels, unlike others.
Just like watermelon, sweet melon requires warm conditions with loam and sandy soil that is well drained and fertile. The melon can be planted by sowing the seeds and later transplanting direct seeding though the latter is preferred since the seeds are large.
The crop can be grown under irrigation or it can be rain-fed. The former is preferred to prevent long periods of leaf wetness that encourage fungal diseases. Soil moisture test should be done before watering to avoid water logging.
Weeding should be done during the early stages of development to prevent competition of nutrients and space. The crop later develops a cover that helps to conserve moisture and the growth of weeds.
Once the seeds have germinated, it's vital to control cutworms that cut the seedlings at the base of the plant. The crop is also affected by spider mites.
Unlike watermelons, the crop is not easily attacked by fruit flies during the early stages of growth. However, during the ripening stage, the plant is easily attacked by fruit flies which are controlled by use of cultural methods, biological methods and chemicals.
