Most telephone conversations are different from face to face ones. This is mainly because while talking on phone, we do not normally see the face of the person we are talking with, unless when making a video call. We can tell whether they are happy or not only through what they say. In a face-to-face dialogue, a smile would show friendliness, but in a telephone chat, the smile cannot be seen.
Therefore, when talking on telephone, we need to be careful about the words we use. Polite words like "Please", "Excuse me", May I," "Thank you", "It's my pleasure" and "I beg your pardon" show that we respect the person we are talking to on phone. We should try to use the words more frequently not only when talking on phone but also in our face-to-
face conversations.
- Telephone conversations differ from face-to-face ones in that
- normally in telephone conversations, we don't see each other, unlike in face-to-face.
- face-to-face conversation can be made possible by video calling, unlike in phone chats.
- unlike in face-to-face conversations, smiles can be noticed in phone conversation.
- in face-to-face conversations, costs have to be incurred unlike in telephone conversations.
- How can we tell that one is not friendly in a telephone conversation?
- When they talk loudly.
- Through what they say.
- When they wear a frowny face.
- When they smile through the conversation.
- What is the benefit of using polite word in our conversations according to this passage?
- Using the words raises our dignity.
- When we use polite words, we are able to tell the moods of our friends.
- Using polite words makes us gain respect.
- Using polite words is important because it saves time.
- Polite words
- should be used when making telephone calls only.
- must always be used when talking face-to face with our friends.
- should neither be used on phone nor in face-to-face talks.
- should be used both when making calls or talking to others face-to-face.
