MARKING SCHEME

  1. SIGHT READING TEST (10 marks)
    1. Award 2 marks for each bar accurately performed (pitch and rhythm). (8 marks)
      - award full mark for correctly performed bar
      - award only 1 mark per bar if rhythm is wrong
      - no mark for wrong pitch (rhythm not to be considered if pitch is wrong)
      - progressively (award 1 mark for correct half bar)
    2. Award ½ mark for correct interpretation of time signature (½ mark)
    3. Fluency and consistency (continuous flow without undue lapses - allow only one repeat for full marks) (½ mark)
    4. Special performance instructions/directions. (slurs, dynamics, phrases, staccato etc). Special perform(½ mark)
      Total (10 marks)

  2. WESTERN SET PIECE (Voice or Instrument) (15 marks)
    1. Correct key as prescribed (1 mark)
    2. Accuracy of notes (pitch and rhythm) (6 marks)
    3. Compatibility with accompaniment (candidate will lose the mark if performed without accompaniment) (1 mark)
    4. Performance instructions/directions (2 marks)
      (Tempo, dynamics, expression marks, staccatos)
    5. Fluency, consistency and articulation (2 marks)
    6. Tone quality(1 mark)
    7. General musicianship - interpretation of the piece, creativity (2 marks)
      Total (15 marks)

  3. AFRICAN MUSIC/DANCE (15 marks) The candidate should explain the source and the background of the song, dance or instrument of choice, failure to which the examiner will solicit for the information from the candidate. This requirement should also be communicated to the candidates before the start of the examination.
    1. Traditional Folk song
      1. Choice - appropriateness (2 marks)
      2. Pitching (appropriateness and convenience) (1 mark)
      3. Authenticity of singing including tone quality (2 marks)
      4. Diction (2 marks)
      5. Accompaniment, movement and expression, appropriateness and effectiveness (2 marks)
      6. Musicianship - interpretation, involvement, effectiveness of presentation (5 marks)
      7. Duration (2-3 minutes) (1 mark)

    2. Folk Dance
      1. Choice (relevant to ethnic group and appropriate) (2 marks)
      2. Authenticity of dance steps and movements. (2 marks)
      3. Variety of movements, singing and accompaniment. (1 mark)
      4. Coordination of movements, singing and accompaniment. (2 marks)
      5. Pitching (within comfortable range) (1 mark)
      6. Accompaniment (relevance and effectiveness). (1 mark)
      7. Costumes and decor (appropriate and neatly organized) (2 marks)
      8. Effectiveness of presentation. (3 marks)
      9. Duration (2-3 minutes) (1 mark)
        Total (15 marks)

    3. Drum Set
      1. Choice (of African origin e.g. Isukuti, Ohang'la, Sengenya) (2 marks)
      2. Tuning (tone quality) (2 marks)
      3. Authenticity of performance (rhythm, style, music and ensemble) (2 marks)
      4. Coordination of the performance(1 mark)
      5. Variety of rhythmic patterns and drumming styles(2 marks)
      6. Mastery of playing skills(3 marks)
      7. Musicianship (expressive and effectiveness of presentation) (2 marks)
      8. Duration (2-3 minutes) (1 mark)
        Total (15 marks)

    4. African Melodic Wind Instruments
      1. Choice (of African origin) (2 marks)
      2. Tone quality (2 marks)
      3. Authenticity of music (2 marks)
      4. Co-ordination of the performance (1 mark)
      5. Variety of rhythm/melody (2 marks)
      6. Mastery of playing skills (3 marks)
      7. Musicianship (expressive and effectiveness of presentation)(2 marks)
      8. Duration (2-3 minutes)(1 mark)
        Total (15 marks)

    5. String Instruments and Melodic Idiophones
      1. Choice (of African origin) (2 marks)
      2. Tuning/Tone quality (2 marks)
      3. Authenticity of music (2 marks)
      4. Variety of rhythm and melody (2 marks)
      5. Co-ordination of performance with singing and accompaniment of other instruments (1 mark)
      6. Mastery of playing skills (3 marks)
      7. Musicianship (expressive and effectiveness of presentation) (2 marks)
      8. Duration (2-3 minutes) (1 mark)
        Total (15 marks)

  4. TECHNICAL EXERCISES (10 marks)
    These exercises should be performed from memory, as prescribed in the KNEC examination regulations.
    1. Voice, Wood wind, Brass and String Instruments (excluding Guitar)
      1. Major scale:
        • ascending and descending (f) with correct pitches and dynamics(1 mark)
        • ascending and descending (p) with correct pitches and dynamics (1 mark)
          (2 marks)
      2. Minor scale:
        • ascending and descending (f) with correct pitches and dynamics(1 mark)
        • ascending and descending (p) with correct pitches and dynamics (1 mark)
          (2 marks)
      3. Sequence:
        • correct ascending form (1 mark)
        • Correct descending form (1 mark)
          (2 marks)
      4. Major Arpeggio:
        • ascending and descending (f) with correct pitches and dynamics (1 mark)
        • ascending and descending (P) with correct pitches and dynamics (1 mark)
          (2 marks)
      5. Minor Arpeggio:
        • ascending and descending (f) with correct pitches and dynamics (1 mark)
        • ascending and descending (p) with correct pitches and dynamics (1 mark)
          (2 marks)

    2. Piano and Organ
      • The candidate will be allowed to choose scales and arpeggios from the set list.
        1. Major scale both hands: 
          • Ascending 2 octaves (1 mark)
          • Descending 2 octaves (1 mark)
            (2 marks)
        2. Minor scale both hands:
          • Descending 2 octaves (1 mark)
          • Ascending 2 octaves (1 mark)
            (2 marks)
        3. Major Arpeggio separate hands:
          • Ascending 2 octaves(1 mark)
          • Descending 2 octaves(1 mark)
            (2 marks)
        4. Minor Arpeggio separate hands:
          • Ascending 2 octaves (1 mark)
          • Descending 2 octaves (1 mark)
            (2 marks)
        5. Contrary motion C major 2 octaves(2 marks)

    3. Guitar
      The candidate will play scales and arpeggios as prescribed.
