MARKING SCHEME

INTRODUCTION

PRACTICAL SIGNING SKILLS, KCSE

The KSL 504/3 is a paper which aims at assessing the practical (expressive) signing skills of the candidates. It is a conversational approach to KSL assessment based on Language Proficiency Interview (LPI) procedures.

Like language proficiency interviews, the KCSE KSL Practical Signing Skill (PSS) assessment aims at assessing how well candidates are able to use Kenyan Sign Language for their communication needs. The PSS assessment involves a maximum of 15 minutes one-to-one signed conversation between the examiners and the candidate. The recommended number of examiners should be 3 with Native or Native-like proficiency in KSL usage. This paper assesses KSL as it is used in the Deaf community in Kenya.
This includes the use of:

  1. Meaning –based Kenyan Sign Language vocabulary consistent with KICD syllabus and dictionary.
  2. A variety of grammatical features that are consistent with in KSL to.
    • Get information,
    • Get people to do thing s through requests, orders and persuasions,
    • Express opinions,
    • Express emotions ,
    • Make commitments, (i.e offer, promise, agree to do something).

The grammatical features in KSL that will be examined in this paper include:

  1. Use of signing space, indexing, eye gaze,sign movement, directionality, body shifts to separate ideas and to identify and discuss persons, places and objects present and not present.
  2. KSL- sign word order which facilitates effective communication in this gestural-visual language.
  3. Facial expressions and non-manual markers that support or add to information communicated.

All the above aspects will be observed and examined. Clarity of sign production and, fluency, comprehension and creativity are important as they determine the rating levels of each candidate.

SECTION B: CREATIVE COMPOSITION / DISCUSSION (20 Marks)

Each candidate will choose a topic or picture which will be used to help him/her stimulate conversation/own composition. Look for the following and credit:

  1. Candidate creativity and how automatic/ fluently does the candidate communicate ideas in relation to the topic/ picture chosen.
  2. Vocabulary knowledge: how rich is the KSL vocabulary used.
    • What level is the vocabulary (basic, intermediate or advanced).
    • Is the candidate finger-spelling words that have signs?
    • Does he/she comfortably use other signs to explain concepts he/she has no signs for?
  3. Production and fluency.
    • Examine the candidate’s ability to produce signs clearly and use KSL fluently i.e correct use of the 4 parameters.
  4. Grammatical features:
    Examine the candidate’s ability to:
    • use the KSL word order correctly;
    • use pointing, body shifts and eye gaze;
    • use directionality;
    • facial expression;
    • listing on the non-dominant hand;
    • use of classifiers;
    • use of non-manual markers.
