  1. FUNCTIONAL WRITING                                                 (20 Marks)
    You are the secretary of Debating Club in your school; recently the club held a meeting and the following issues were discussed;
    • Election of officials
    • Income generating activities in the club
    • Preparation for the great debate.
      In the meeting, 8 members were present, 3 including the vice chairperson sent apologies and the whereabouts of 2 members were unknown. The club patron also attended the meeting. Apart from the main issues, members raised two issues from the previous meeting. Write down the minutes of the meeting.
  2. Q2. CLOZE TEST  
    Fill in each of the blank spaces in the following passage with the most appropriate word.     (10 marks)

      2. Using illustrations show how rhythm has been achieved in the poem.    (2marks)
      3. What intonation would you use in reading line 3 stanza one in this poem? Give reason.   (2marks)                                               
      4. How would you say the last line of the second stanza?                              (2marks)
    2. In each of the following sets of words, identify the odd one out in pronunciation.       (3marks)

    3. A guest speaker is giving a speech on prevention of drug and substance abuse amongst the youth. You find it necessary to interrupt before he finishes his speech.
      1. Give two instances that may force you to interrupt.                                                 (2 marks)
      2. Identify any expressions you would use to interrupt politely.                                  (2marks)
    4. During one of the English group discussion you realize that most members did not benefit from it. Explain three ways in which you can create orderliness in a discussion so as to benefit all group members.                         (6 marks)
    5. Indicate the appropriate intonation at the end of each of the sentences below.    (4marks)

      2. Who do you think you are?
      3. I saw him along Bondo-Usenge road.
      4. That was a superb goal!
    6. Consider the following conversation between a father and his son taking place in the fathers study and use it to answer the questions that follow.
      Son: Can I come in?
      Father: Yes son, what can I do for you?
      Son: I want to go dance at Kings Club. There is this Rhumba artist performing there and all my friends are going and of course I need money.
      Father: You should first ask for permission.
      Son: But you are not going to refuse, are you? I told you all my friends are going.
      Father: You are blackmailing me, and for that reason, I’ll not allow you……….
      Son: Dad, you are insensitive, all my friends are going.
      Father: Stop it and get out of my sight please.
      1. How best should the son have begun this conversation?                    (2marks)
      2. Identify three other shortcomings in the son’s negotiation skills.          (3marks)

      4. Verbal - with a falling intonation because it is a statement/to mark finality
                   - say it while stressing the words “my” and “wedding” to show the importance of the occasion to the speaker.
        Non-verbal - with a happy/smiley face to mark happiness on the “wedding”
                            - pointing at myself to show “my” wedding.
