    2. On 1st October 2013, MAMBO Traders had shs.10, 000 cash and shs.40, 000 at the bank. During the month, the following transactions took place.
      Oct 2 Bought goods worth shs3, 100 by cheque
      3 Paid motor expenses shs.6000 in cash
      6 Sold goods worth 8200 cash
      10 Paid a creditor shs.9500 by cheque after deducting a 5% cash discount
      12 Received a commission of shs.580 directly into the bank account.
      14 Shelby, a debtor, settled her account of shs.30, 000 by cheque less a 2.5% cash discount
      15 The bank deducted shs. 850 from the business account for services rendered
      19 The owner took shs.1500 by cheque for personal use
      23 Maboko traders settled their account of shs.39, 200 by cheque less 3% cash discount
      24 Withdrew shs.15, 000 from bank for business use
      26 Received a cheque shs.8, 200 from a debtor in full settlement of a debt of shs.8, 500
      30 Took all the cash to the bank leaving only shs.1800 in the cash till

    2. Mama Ntilie shop sells all its goods at a margin of 20 % for the year ended 30th April 2006; The trading activities were as follows;

      Net profit 5 % of sales
      Closing stock Shs 200,000
      Calculate;
      1. The gross profit

    1. Benefits that will accrue to a member of a savings and credit cooperative society (SACCO)
      1. S/he will be able to get different types of loans e.g normal, emergency,medical fees and development loans.
      2. Incase of death, his/her beneficiaries do not lose savings nor are they called upon to repay the loan.
      3. His/her savings are insured with the cooperative Insurance Company thus very safe.
      4. S/he will not require security or other collateral when applying for a loan. All that is required is his/her salary, shares plus the guarantors.
      5. The interest charged on loans is low compared to the interest charged by commercial banks and other financial institutions.
      6. It is easy to save with SACCOs since the deductions are made through a check-off system.
      7. It is easy to get a loan from a SACCO since only a few simple requirements have to be fulfilled.

      1. Providing access to credit: Access to credit is facilitated through various parastatals and government institutions which provide loans at low interest loans. Such institutions include; Industrial Development Bank, Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation and the Kenya Industrial estates
      2. Ensuring that there is political stability and goodwill: Political stability means that there is little chance of civil strife and insecurity while political goodwill refers to encouragement and support by political leaders.

      1. Equitable: A good tax system should ensure that there is fairness in payment of tax.
      2. Certain: The tax that an individual or firm is supposed to pay should be clear in terms of the amount, time and manner in which it should be paid.
      3. Simplicity: an efficient tax system should be simple enough to be understood by the payer.
      4. Flexible: The system should be readily adoptable to changing circumstances such as change in price levels.
      5. Diversity: The system should be diversified so that it meets the revenue requirements of the country.
      6. Economical: The cost of collecting and administering should be lower than the revenue to be collected.
      7. Convenient: The tax levied should be convenient to both the contributor and the collector.
      8. Ability to pay: The tax system should be designed in a way that the amount charged is not too high to the extent that the contributor is not able to pay.

      1. When the resources are many: A high population would mean proper utilization of the available resources.
      2. When supply for goods is high: There would be market for the goods and services.
      3. When investments are high: This is because labour will be available

      1. loss of confidence in the country’s currency.
      2. The purchasing power of people goes down and people become poorer.
      3. It discourages savings as one uses all money in purchasing goods.
      4. Inflation brings political unrest as politicians use it as a tool to fight the ruling government.
      5. It hinders proper implementation of development projects by the government.
      6. It increases the general prices of goods and services thus the poor are disadvantaged as they cannot afford to buy goods at high prices.
      7. It discourages investments as factors of production become very expensive.
      8. Trade unions fight for high pay for workers and as a result firms lay down some of its workers.
      9. Creditors encounter losses when they sell on credit, later prices increase as debtors will pay less than the actual value of goods.

    1. Benefits that a country derives from transporting oil through pipeline. (10mks)
      1. There is continuous flow of the oil. The flow can go on for 24 hours with minimal involvement of labour.
      2. It is relatively cheap means of transport as it depends on pressure generated at the main station and booster stations located along the pipeline or the force of gravity.
      3. It helps to reduce the number of tankers on the road, thereby reducing wear and tear, congestion and the possibility of accidents on the road.
      4. It is reliable and convenient as delays due to congestion or accidents are not experienced.
      5. It is environmentally friendly as it reduces pollution such as air pollution and noise pollution.
      6. Pipeline transport is capital intensive and therefore it reduces the cost of labour.
      7. Once the pipes have been laid down, it requires minimal maintenance.
