Instruction to Candidates

  1. Candidates MUST use machine stitches appropriately in the construction of the garment. Hand worked stitches used INSTEAD of machine stitches will not be marked.
  2. Hand worked stitches will ONLY be allowed for
    1. Hemming stitches at Nos. 6
    2. Tacking stitches at Nos. 7
    3. Hemming stitches at Nos. 8
    4. Button holes stitches at Nos. 9


QUESTIONS

A pattern of a child’s dress is provided. You are advised to study the sketches, the question paper and the layout before the test.

  1. MATERIALS PROVIDED
    Pattern pieces
    1. Front bodice
    2. Back bodice
    3. Sleeve
    4. Collar
    5. Cuff
    6. Neck binding
    7. Sleeve opening strip
      N.B pattern piece to cut interfacing for collar
  2. Light weight plain cotton fabric 65cm by 90 cm wide
  3. Sewing cotton thread to match the fabric

THE TEST
Using the materials provide, cut and make up the left of half child’s dress bodice to show the following

  1. Presentation (6 ½ marks)
  2. Cutting out (22 marks)
  3. The working of the waist dart (6 ½ marks)
  4. The working of a machine fell at shoulder (8mks). Working of French seams at the side seams and under arm seams (13mks)
  5. The preparation of an interfaced collar and attaching it to the bodice (8 marks)
  6. The making of the continuous straight strip opening at the sleeve (5 marks)
  7. The attaching of the sleeve cuff and held on w.s with tacking stitches. (7 marks)
  8. The preparation and attaching of the sleeve to the bodice and trimming and neatening a half of the armhole using loop stitches. (9 marks)
  9. The making of the button hole stitches (5 marks)
    At the end of the examination, firmly sew on your work, on a single fabric a label bearing your name and index number. Remove the needles and pins from you r work, then fold your work carefully and place it in the envelop provided. Do not put scraps of fabric in the envelop.

NB. Cut pattern pieces that are not made should be put in the envelop, in readiness for marking.

FRONT WAIST DART

  1. Straight stitchery (1) tapering to the point   ( ½)
