INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

  • This paper consists of three sections A, B and C
  • Answer all the questions in sections A and B and any two questions from section C
  • Candidates should answer the questions in English.

SECTION A (40 MARKS)
Answer all the questions in the spaces provided

  1. Mention two points to bear in mind when choosing a rolling pin. (2 marks)
  2. Give two reasons why stains should be removed as soon as they occur. (2marks)
  3. Name two tools used for transferring pattern markings on a fabric ( 2 marks)
  4. State two advantages of window shopping (2 marks)
  5. Outline three ways of conserving energy when using a refrigerator ( 3 marks)
  6. State two types of electric lamps ( 2 marks)
  7. List two qualities of well-made gathers ( 2 marks)
  8. State why vitamin A deficiency is not common in most parts of Kenya ( 2 marks)
  9. Identify two bathing equipment for a baby ( 2 marks)
  10. Give three reasons why it is important to shave armpits and pubic hair ( 3marks)
  11. Outline two uses of air conditioners in the house ( 2 marks)
  12. List two fullness worked by drawings threads. ( 2 marks)
  13. State two reasons for folding in flour in creamed cake mixtures ( 2 marks)
  14. State two ways of minimizing wastage of soap when washing ( 2 marks)

SECTION B (COMPULSORY) 20 MARKS

  1. Your aunt is down with Tuberculosis and you have been requested to take care of the house.
    Outline how you would:
    1. Wash her fast-colored cotton nightdress with a gaping seam. (7mks)
    2. Thoroughly clean the cemented pavement in the compound. (7mks)
    3. Thoroughly clean the aluminium sufuria used for cooking ugali. (6mks)

SECTION A (40 MARKS)

  1. Mention two points to bear in mind when choosing a rolling pin. (2 marks)
    • Should be smooth
    • Easy to grasp / hold
  2. Give two reasons why stains should be removed as soon as they occur. (2marks)
    • To prevent them from getting fixed / set permanently
    • For easy removal of stain
  3. Name two tools used for transferring pattern markings on a fabric ( 2 marks)
    • Tailors chalk
    • Tracing wheel and carbon paper.
  4. State two advantages of window shopping (2 marks)
    • It helps one to know where the item is to be found
    • Enables one to compare qualities of different items offered at different prices.
    • The prospective buyers are allowed to hold and examine the goods.
  5. Outline three ways of conserving energy when using a refrigerator ( 3 marks)
    • Switch off when not in use
    • Cool food first before storing in the fridge
    • Keep door shut to keep away warm air
    • Avoid overloading
  6. State two types of electric lamps ( 2 marks)
    • The filament lamp
    • The fluorescent lamp
  7. List two qualities of well-made gathers ( 2 marks)
    • Should be well-distributed
    • Should not be bulky
  8. State why vitamin A deficiency is not common in most parts of Kenya ( 2 marks)
    • There are lots of fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin A readily available in the country
    • Children are given vitamin A in the well baby clinics
  9. Identify two bathing equipment for a baby ( 2 marks)
    • Basin
    • flannel
  10. Give three reasons why it is important to shave armpits and pubic hair ( 3marks)
    • Reduces perspiration
    • Prevents bad smells
    • To avoid body parasites
  11. Outline two uses of air conditioners in the house ( 2 marks)
    • Brings in fresh air into the room and removes stale air from a room
    • Can be set at a certain temperature to control room temperature.
  12. List two fullness worked by drawings threads. ( 2 marks)
    • Easing

  13. State two reasons for folding in flour in creamed cake mixtures ( 2 marks)
    • To aerate the mixture
    • To prevent loss of air already trapped air
  14. State two ways of minimizing wastage of soap when washing ( 2 marks)
    • Using soft water to wash clothes
    • Soaking clothes where possible
  15. Identify two reasons for pouring hot water down the sink after cleaning. ( 2 marks)
    • To dissolve any grease present
    • To disinfect / kill germs
    • To kill pests e.g cockroaches.
  16. Give two good qualities of deep –frying oil. ( 2 marks)
    • Should have high smoking point to avoid burning upon heating
    • Be clean without any residues
    • Should not have a definite flavor that can be transferred to the food being cooked.
  17. State two disadvantages of cross method when ventilating a room ( 2 marks)
    • Leads to banging of doors / windows
    • Air does not get well-circulated in rooms because it gets in suddenly and rushes out immediately
  18. Mention four points to bear in mind when buying candles. ( 4 marks)
    • Buy non-drip candles - Should suit the purpose / occasion
    • Buy thick candles - Have flat bases.

SECTION B (COMPULSORY) 20 MARKS

  1. Your aunt is down with tuberculosis and you have been requested to take care of the house.
    Outline how you would:
    1. Wash her fast-colored cotton nightdress with a gaping seam. (7mks)
      • Assemble all the equipment and materials needed ( ½ )
      • Put on protective clothing / gear e.g gloves ( ½ )
      • Soak for a short time ( ½ ) in cold water added a disinfectant ( ½ )
      • Wring off soaking water
      • Wash in warm ( ½ ) soapy ( ½ ) water, using mild friction / light rubbing ( ½ )
      • Wash systematically till done
      • Rinse thoroughly in warm ( ½ ) water to remove dirt and soap
      • Final rinse in clean cold ( ½ ) water added vinegar ( ½ ) to brighten the colour
      • Wring out water ( ½ ) turn inside out
      • Dry in the shade ( ½ ) hold with pegs ( ½ )
      • When dry, mend the gaping seam ( ½ )
      • Clean, dry and store equipment used.
    2. Thoroughly clean the cemented pavement in the compound. ( 7mks)
      • Assemble all equipment and materials needed ( ½ )
      • Sweep ( ½ ) the pavement and dispose of dirt
      • Wet a section of pavement with warm ( ½ ) soapy ( ½ ) water scrub ( ½ ) thoroughly with a scrubbing brush
      • Rinse the section with floor cloth ( ½ ) wrung from ( ½ ) clean ( ½ ) warm ( ½ ) water severally.\
      • Move to the next section ( ½ ) clean and rinse as above
      • Overlap ( ½ ) the sections to avoid dirty border marks
      • Dry ( ½ ) the pavement with a dry mop / floor cloth ( ½ )
      • Clean, dry and store the equipment used ( ½ )
    3. Thoroughly clean the aluminium sufuria used for cooking ugali. (6mks)
      • Collect all equipment and materials needed ( ½ )
      • Soak ( ½ ) to loosen the ugali
      • Scrap off ( ½ )with a plastic / wooden spoon ( ½ )
      • Wash using hot ( ½ ) soapy ( ½ ) water using sisal fibre/ steel wool ( ½ ) clean along one direction to prevent scratches ( ½ )
      • Rinse thoroughly in hot ( ½ ) water
      • Dry upside down on a rack / wipe with a clean dry cloth ( ½ )
      • Store upside down / cover with a lid ( ½ )
      • Clean and dry the used equipment and store well ( ½ )

SECTION C (40 MARKS)
Answer any two questions from this section.

  1.  
    1. Explain three reasons for covering a saucepan when cooking. (6 marks)
      • To conserve water – soluble nutrients which may escape in the steam
      • To protect the food from any foreign body which may drop in the pan
      • To retain flavor which may escape through volatile acids.
      • To conserve fuel as this reduces cooking time
    2. Discuss three reasons why biogas is rarely used in urban centers despite its advantages. (6mks)
      • Scarcity of land in urban centers / estates for installing the digester
      • In availability of raw materials since domestic animals are not reared in towns
      • The bad odour pollutes the air ( 3 points well-explained = 2x3 = 6mks
    3. Outline four qualities of a well-made dart (4 marks)
      • Secured / reinforced
      • Should taper off to nothing
      • Lie flat on both R.S & W.S
      • Pressed to face right direction
    4. Give four reasons why a consumer must be protected (4 marks)
      • To ensure they get good quality goods and services.’
      • To ensure they get the right quantity of goods as stated on packages
      • To ensure they buy goods & services at a fair price.
      • To ensure consumers get the right information
      • To ensure they use safe products
  2.  
    1. Explain three ways of avoiding food wastage in the kitchen (6 marks)
      • Cook just enough to avoid unnecessary leftovers.
      • Food should be prepared correctly to avoid wastage.
      • Use left over foods instead of discarding
      • Store food properly to avoid spoilage
    2. Discuss three factors to consider when choosing fuels in the home (6 marks)
      • The running cost of the fuels
      • The cost of the equipment to be used alongside the fuel purchased
      • The fuel should be versatile in use.
    3. Explain three points on the care of children’s toys (6 marks)
      • Clean and disinfect them regularly
      • Repair when they get damaged
      • Store them well in a clean dry place
    4. Outline two attributes of lighting. (2 marks)
      • Lighting in the home should be bright enough for work to be done efficiently.
      • Be well-distributed to avoid casting shadows on working areas
      • Should enhance interior decoration
      • Should be without glare
      • Minimize accidents and ensures ease of movement.
  3.  
    1. Explain three reasons of using machine-fell seam on children’s garments (6 marks)
      • It’s a very flat seam hence comfortable against the baby’s skin
      • It’s a very strong seam due to the double row of stitches hence can withstand frequent washing / wear.
      • Raw edges are well – concealed hence no irritation to children’s skin
    2. Suggest four ways of reducing expenditure on food in the home. (4 marks)
      • Using cheaper substitutes e.g pulses instead of animal proteins
      • Using foods in season
      • Buying food in bulk where possible
      • Taking advantage of special offers if any.
      • Avoid wastage when preparing food.
    3. Highlight four points that leads to proper maintenance of garments. (4 marks)
      • Using them for the right purpose to avoid spoilage
      • Mending them when they get torn
      • Laundering them well according to the fibres from which they are made.
      • Storing them properly when dry and in a dry place.
      • Removing stains as soon as the occur.
    4. Explain three problems a mother may experience in breastfeeding (6 marks)
      • Breast engorgement
      • Sore nipples
      • Mother’s inability to breastfeed due to several problems / illness
      • Baby’s refusal to breastfeed
      • Mother’s refusal to breastfeed.
