  4. Using sketches show two faults that occur as a result of incorrectly fixing butt hinges. (4 marks)

      1. When the setting of the saw is lost.
      2. When the timber is green or wet.
      3. When the timber has sticky resins.

      1. Place the thumb on the line at the edge.
      2. Place a cross-cut saw at an angle.
      3. Draw the saw backwards to make a starting cut on the waste side.
      4. Complete the cutting at the full front thrust.(3 marks)

    1. Reasons that may make a try square inaccurate:
      1. Incorrectly storing the try square (e.g placing heavy objects on it)
      2. Constantly dropping the try square square on the floo.
      3. Using the try square for the wrong purpose.
      4. Worn out stock or blade

    2. Safety precautions to observe when using a circular saw.
      1. Push sticks should be used when cutting short pieces. 
      2. Set appropriate depth of cut.

    1. Advantages of seasoning timber.
      • Easy to work with when using hand tools.
      • Light in weight.
      • Has better resistance to mould and fungi.
      • Receives finishes easily and produces quality finishe
      • Has less shrinkage.
    2. Timber seasoning defects.

    3. Two methods of sanding a wide board by hand are:
      1. Sanding along the grains.
        Sand the piece along the grain with uniform strokes. The strokes should be long and smoothly done.
      2. Sanding in circular motion.
        Keep the hand in a circular motion to produce a smooth surface. Do not rub roughly but control your hand slowly in a circular manner.
  14.              
    1. Procedure of applying shellac polish on a table top..
      • Pour small amount of shellac into a container.
      • Add equal amount of thinner.
      • Dampen a rag with some thinner and wipe the surface to be fini hed.
      • Dip brush about one third in shellac and wipe the sides of the brush on the container.
      • Start at the center and brush toward the edges.
      • Use long and even strokes.
      • Allow the shellac to dry at least an hour (four to six hours is better).
      • Sand the surface with fine steel wool of No. 5/0 garnet pape.
      • Apply the other coats in that order.
    2.                    
      1. To illustrate the correct use of a hand brush when varnishing:

      2. Cleaning and storing the brush.
        • After use, the brush is washed in the turpentine, wiped out with a clean cloth, it is dried then it is suspended in turpentine to keep the bristles straight.

    2. Characteristics of a dovetail saw.
      • Length 150 mm to 200 mm.
      • Teeth as 18-22.
      • Comes with closed or open handle,
      • Used for cutting joints e.g dovetail joint, i.e shoulders and tenons of small tenon joints.

    3. Procedure of cutting out the rectangular shape.
      • Mark the outline of the board
      • Drill two holes on the board. Holes drilled at corners.
      • Insert the compass saw in one hole and cut in two directions.
      • Insert in the second hole and repeat the process.
      • Finish the corners with a rectangular hand fil
