  1. Recently you made a pen friend from Australia. She/he has requested you to know the books you have been analyzing in preparation for your national examinations. Having thoroughly read and understood A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen, you decide to write a review of the same to him/her. Write a book review of the set book that you will send to your friend.                 (20 marks)
  2. Read the passage below and fill in each blank space with an appropriate word.   (10marks)

    Kenya's rapid rate of urbanization will continue to (i)..........pressure on housing and urban infrastructure. Housing is inadequate and the growth of slums and informal settlements are expanding. Some nations have experienced urbanization (ii).............. accompanied skills upgrading, industrialization and the expansion of the urban formal sector.     7. Read the dialogue below then answer the questions that follow.       (6 marks)
      Mary:     Good morning Father
      Father:  Good morning Mary. How was your day?
      Mary:     It was fine, thank you: (Hesitantly) Err, father, excuse me, I would like to go camping during the holiday with scouts club members.
      Father:  Go on.
      Mary:     I know you are not very keen on school trips but I would really like to go to camping during the August holiday with Scouts Club                       members.
      Father:  But Mary, you are aware of my stand on such trips. They create a healthy ground for immoral behavior. Besides you have a lot of                  homework to complete. You can't afford to waste that time.
      Mary:    Father, I understand where you are coming from but this trip is very important. We are going to have a First Aid training. We are                      also going to be trained on how to deal with HIV and AIDS pandemic. I promise to complete my homework before I go on the trip                    and behave myself while there.
      Father:  What about your studies? You are a candidate. You must prepare early enough if you want to perform well.
      Mary:     I agree with you father. I will put in extra hours when I come back from the trip. I promise you.
      Father:  For how long will you be away?
      Mary:     Two weeks, father.
      Father:   Well, it is fine; you have my permission but remember to keep your word. Agreed?
      Mary:     Agreed Father.
      Father:  Okay then.
      Mary:     Thbank you so much dad.
      Father:  Welcome Mary.
      1. From the conversation above it is evident that Mary has excellent negotiation skills. Identify three of these skills. (3 marks)
      2. Why would you describe this encounter as a win-win situation? Explain your answer.  (2 marks)
      3. What is the purpose of greetings in this conversation?    (1 mark)

      CONTENT
      • INTRODUCTION - candidate should give a little background information about the text including author, setting and any other relevant information about the text √2
      • THEMES/SUBJECT MATTER - mention of the key issues tackled in the text such as place of women in the society, patriarchy, etc. Any two issues mentioned √2
      • CHARACTERS - give the key characters and how they help bring out the key issues in the play e.g. Nora and Torvald Helmer as the key characters in the text √1
      • STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES - mention any strengths and weaknesses in the text. This could be in terms of the styles or language used in the text e.g. if one mentions that the text is rich in imagery, that can be treated as a strength. √1 or the vocabulary used in the text is too complex or difficult to understand that can be treated as a weakness √1
      • CONCLUSION - this should bring out the reviewer's overall recommendation for the friend to read the book. √1 TOTAL=08 MARKS

        NB
        • Apart from the introduction and conclusion, which should appear in the first and the last paragraphs respectively, the rest of the items can appear anywhere in the review.
        • Characters could be mentioned at any point of the review including the introduction but it should go beyond mere mention
        • The examiner should use his/her discretion to judge whether the student has brought out the strengths and weaknesses appropriately and award marks.
        • The weaknesses should not dilute the overall intention of the book review

        • I would say with a melancholic/sad/sombre tone / wear a sad face while saying to bring out a sombre mood.
        • I would say while pointing using my index finger to show reference to the frog dying.
        • I would say it with a pause at burns, dies to show sadness / say it a falling intonation because it is a statement to show sadness.

    5. You are a member of Debate Club in your school and you are among the three members who are to represent the club in The Grant Cycle Debate Contest to be held soon. Give three things that you would do as preparation for the contest. (3marks)
      • I would research on the motion to find out on factual information to support my arguments
      • I would rehearse in front of a mirror/mock audience/family to gain confidence
      • I would prepare a detailed outline of the points of the debate to help me organize my presentation well and to minimize repetition
      • I would choose/ select appropriate dress code to boost my confidence
      • I  would write down short notes on the facts to help me remember while delivering the points
      • I would practice on how to specchi fluently to gain confidence
      • I would do relaxation exercises if anxious to ease and calm myself.
