    • On burning it shrinks and melts
    • It emits the smell of celery

  10. Differentiate between a cess pool and a soak pit. (2mks)
    • A cess pool is a concrete tank built underground to cater for drainage of one or few homes while a soak pit is dug into the ground then filled with layers of large and small stones then covered with soil.
  11. Mention two functions of a fish slice in cookery. (1mk)
    • Used for shallow frying
    • Removing hot foods from liquids
    • Separation of solid food from liquid food
  12. State three characteristics of a well made dart. (3mks)
    • Should be stitched from the widest part tapering to nothing
    • Should be finished correctly at the end
    • Should be pressed flat on W.S and R.S
    • Should face the correct side / direction i.e. C.B, C.F
  13. Give two examples of builders added to detergents during manufacture. (1mk)
    • Sodium carbonate
    • Borax
    • Sodium sulphate
  14. Give two reasons for using each of the following laundry agents. (2mks)

    • The fabric for patching should match that of the garment in colour, weight, age and fabric content
    • The patch should be inconspicuous unless decorative
    • The shape of the patch should correspond to that of the hole or worn out area
    • The patch should match in grain with the garment
    • The patch should be flat
  17. Mention four ways a consumer can overcome inflation as a problem. (2mks)
    • Stock items that do not spoil easily
    • Buy or pay for services which you are certainly going to need in advance
    • Window shop before purchasing
    • Compare prices of alternative goods
    • Use convenience foods where possible
  18. Mention two points to observe when taking body measurements. (2mks)
    • The person whose measurements are being taken should wear simple out fit
    • The person should stand upright but relaxed
    • To obtain round measurements always put two fingers between the tape measure and the body
    • Tape measure should move freely
  19. Give two limitations of dry cleaning (1mk)
    • It is expensive as liquid solvents are costly
    • The solvents are very volatile and highly inflammable, they can catch fire
    • The solvents are poisonous
  20. Differentiate between monochromatic and analogous colour schemes. (2mks)
    • In monochromatic colour scheme, one colour must be the key colour of the whole scheme while for analogous are colours next to each other on the colour wheel.

                                                                                   SECTION B
  21. You are involved in doing some house hold chores over the weekend. Give the procedure you would use to:-
    1. Thorough clean a refrigerator (7mks)
      • Defrost the refrigerator (½)
      • Check the state of the stored food (½) and discard any that has gone bad (½)
      • Wash the containers (½)
      • Clean the inside and the outside (½)surface using warm soapy water (½)
      • Rinse with a cloth (½) wrung out of warm water and dry (½)
      • Wipe the other containers and shelves to remove smudges (½)
      • Close the refrigerator ( ½) door and dust the outside  to remove any smudges (½)
      • Clean the handles, rinse and dry well (½)
      • Clean all movable parts in the same way (½)
      • Re-arrange the fridge with fresh food (½)
    2. Launder a nylon night dress. (7mks)
      • Soak (½) in cold water for a short time
      • Wring out of the soaking water (½)
      • Wash in warm detergent (½) water using kneading and squeezing (½) method to remove dirt
      • Rinse thoroughly in warm (½) water to remove soap and dirt (½)
      • Final rinse in cold water (½) into which fabric conditioner (½) has been added to get rid of static electrically (½)
      • Drip-dry (½) under shade (½)
      • Use warm iron (½) to remove creases
      • Air to dry completely (½)
      • Fold and store in a clean dry (½) place
    3. Clean a plastic greasy plate. (5mks)
      • Wash in hot soapy (½) water using a scouring pad (½) to remove stains (½)
      • Rinse severally in hot water (½) to remove traces of soap and dirt (½)
      • Final rinse in cold water (½) to freshen (½)
      • Wipe dry (½) with a kitchen cloth (½) to prevent water marks
      • Store in a cupboard (½)

    1. State and explain four advantages of using left over foods. (8mks)
      • It is economical:- cooked food that is left over can be used again
      • It is time saving:- some ingredients which otherwise would take long to cook are quickly served after reheating for a short time e.g. rough cuts of meat
      • It is  energy saving:- a meal is presented without using a lot of fuel
      • It is labour saving:- does not involve preparation which is normally the case for usual food preparation and cooking
      • It is cost saving:- a meal can be produced without involving new purchases especially after a party
    2. State five factors to consider when working button holes. (4mks)
      • Should be the size of the button plus 3mm
      • Start off with a double thread
      • Ensure that one button hole is completed before cutting another
      • Work using button hole stitches
      • Finish off neatly according to the type of fabric
      • Begin working from the furthest end proceeding from left to right
    3. Explain four reasons that can lead to spread of diseases associated with lifestyle. (8mks)
      • Taking meals that are not balanced
      • Eating much convenience foods
      • Ignorance
      • Certain foods are associated with the rich e.g. red/white meat, sugary foods like cakes
      • Much money to spend
      • Some do not want their children to lead the same life style that they led when young

    1. Explain the following common problems in pregnancy (8mks)
      1. Varicose veins
        • Blood veins become overstretched
        • They appear on the surface of the skin as twisted and dilated
        • Hormone cause veins to relax and release more blood in them
      2. Oedema
        • Swelling caused by fluid moving from inside the blood vessels to the space that surround the body cells
      3. Constipation
        • Movement of intestinal tract is reduced
        • Water re-absorption in the cells is increased
        • Enlarging uterus may crowd the colon causing constipation 
      4. Backache
        • Hormone produced in pregnancy do soften the connective tissues holding the bones together
        • Increasing size of the body parts put strain on the muscle and bones in the lower spinal region
    2. Describe the working of gathers by hands (8mks)
      • Begin by a firm knot to secure the thread √ then work the first row of running stitches 6mm above the fitting line √ throughout the width
      • Leave the thread hanging at the end of the row of running stitches √
      • Work the second row of running stitches 6mm below √ the fitting line and leave the thread hanging at the end√
      • Pull both thread ends together √to draw up the fabric until the required size is achieved√
      • Wind the hanging threads round a pin, forming a figure 8 to secure √ the gathers
    3. State four principles of food preservation. (4mks)
      • Application of heat
      • Removal of moisture
      • Exclusion of oxygen
      • Freezing
      • Adding sugar, salt, acids and chemical preservatives

    1. Discuss four reasons why a mother may be forced to stop breast feeding. (8mks)
      • Serious illness which may lead to low or no milk production
      • Conception
      • HIV/AIDS in order to protect the child
      • Depression or serious illness leading to drying up of breast milk
      • Separation with child due to work; instability of the government, divorce
      • Death of a child
      • Painful cracked breast
    2. Mention four factors to consider when choosing a washing machine. (4mks)
      • Buy the best quality that can be afforded
      • There should be adequate space for operation and storage
      • Buy a machine that is easy to operate and maintain
      • Buy a machine made of rust proof materials
      • The machine should have instruction manual supplied with it
      • The electrical connections should be in good order
    3. Describe the preparation of a shirt collar (8mks)
      • Cut the collar, under collar and interfacing according to the pattern√
      • Transfer the pattern markings required √
      • Apply the interfacing on the W.S of the collar leaving the seam allowance√
      • Place the collar and the under collar together with the R.S facing√ ½
      • Match raw edges, fitting line and notches
      • Pin and tack along the fitting line leaving the lower edge where the collar is to be attached to the neckline√
      • Remove pins and machine stitch along the tacking√ ½
      • Trim and layer the seam allowance √ ½
      • Snip the curved section and clip the pointed edges √ ½
      • Turn the collar to the R.S and knife edge √ ½
      • Press the collar √ ½
      • Top stitch round the edge for a neat finish and flatness√
