Instructions to Candidates

  •  There are ten stations in this examination.
  • Candidates are allowed 15minutes at each station.
  • At each station candidates are not allowed to either review the previous stations work or read instructions for other stations.
  •  Attempt all exercises in each station.
  •  All dimensions are in millimeters unless otherwise stated.

STATION I

The figure below shows an assembly of an aircraft single acting actuator.

  1. On the drawing paper provided sketch in good proportion the cross section view of the actuator and label four parts. (10 marks)

Instructions

Using the tools, materials and equipment provided, make the aircraft cargo door handle as shown in the figure 2 below. (10 marks)Maravp2q2

Instructions

Using the tools, equipment and materials provided carry out the following tasks:

  1. Strip one end of the provided cable to expose about 8mm of each of the layer on the cable provided. Let the examiner check your work. (2 marks)
  2.  
    1. Identify the types of cable. (2 marks)
    2. Sketch and label the cable as exposed after stripping. (2 marks)
    3. State the application of the cable in aircraft. (1 mark)
  3. Tin the electrical cable provided and soldier the tinned end to the circuit board. Let the examiner check your work. (2 marks)
  4. State two reasons for using the soldiering flux provided when soldiering. (1 mark)

STATION 4

Study the components and aircraft parts provided and answer the questions below.

  1. Identify the components labeled as M, N, O, and P and complete the table below.(4 marks)

    1. Top diameter along the engine centre line. (1 mark)
    2. Top diameter across engine centre line. (1 mark)
    3.  Bottom diameter along the engine centre line. (1 mark)
    4. Bottom diameter across the engine centre line. (1 mark)
  3.  Calculate the ovality at: (2 marks)
    1. The top
    2. The bottom
  4. On the aircraft bolt provided measure the following: (1 mark)
    1. Across flats
    2. Shank diameter
  5. Illustrate the anatomy of the aircraft bolt provided. (2 marks)

STATION 6

Instructions
Provided is the aero piston engine models and components. Study the model and components then answer the questions below.

  1. Identify the components labeled as 1-4 and state their functions. (4 marks)

  2. Rotate the engine model labeled as X slowly in a clockwise direction as viewed from front for TWO complete revolutions.

    3. Illustrate what happens to the air if no leakage with pressure volume chart. (2 marks)

Study the set up marked and perform the following tasks:

  1.  Displace the weight from the centre to stopper and release it. Record the number of oscillations in a minute. (2 marks)
  2.  Shorten the string to the length of 150 mm and repeat the exercise. Record your observations in cases: (2 marks)
  3. State the reason behind your observations in (a) and (b). (2 marks)
  4. Relate your observations in (a) and (b) to aircraft in flight. (2 marks)
  5. State the effect of the observation in both cases to an aircraft in a bank. (2 marks)

  3. Identify the material from which the tyre is made. (1mark)
  4. State two properties of the material mentioned in (c) above. (1mark)

STATION 10

Study the component provided and answer the following questions.

  1. Identify the component provided. (1 mark)
  2. State the system the component is found. (1 mark)
  3. Name the parts labeled as A, B and C on the component. (3 marks)
  4. State the materials from which the component is made. (1 mark)
  5. Identify rejection criteria of the component. (1 mark)
  6. Give one reason as to why the component is twisted towards the end labeled as C. (2 marks)
  7. Identify the method of ice protection suitable for the component during flight. (1 mark)
