THE MANY HEALING PROPERTIES OF ALOE VERA.

There are over 240 different species of Aloe Vera growing mainly in the dry regions of Africa, Asia, Europe and America. Although Aloe Vera is a member of the lily family. it has many characteristics in common with the cactus. This unique plant also belongs to a larger plant family called Xeroids. Known to herbalists and medical folklorists for centuries as the medical plant or the potted physician. This cactus like plant with green, dagger-shaped leaves filled with a clear, viscous gel, was taken to North America from Africa in the sixteenth century. But long before this, Aloe Vera, whose name means shining bitter substance was widely regarded as the master healing plant. The ancient Egyptians referred to Aloe Vera as the plant of immortality and included it among the funeral gifts buried with the pharaohs in the pyramids. In recent years, medical research has confirmed and extended many of the health claims for the shining bitter substance used externally or consumed as a liquid that forms the heart of Aloe Vera. One of the major properties that makes Aloe Vera a must for the cosmetics industries is its capacity to help the human skin accelerate the production of fibroblasts. Fibroblasts aids in the manufacture of collagen, which is the protein that controls the aging process of the skin and wrinkling. As one ages. collagen starts to disappear from the skin causing a slackening which results in wrinkling. Aloe Vera gel helps to protect the outer layers of the skin by helping it to re- organize skin cells, causing the skin to regain its firmness. The skin needs moisture to avoid wrinkling. Research has also shown that the skin absorbs moisture from Aloe Vera gel three to four times faster than water.

Another benefit of Aloe Vera is that it heals wounds faster. The bulk of the Aloe Vera leaf is filled with a gel, of which 96 percent is water. The other four per cent contains healing substance. Applied to wounds Aloe Vera gel is a mild anaesthetic, relieving itching, swelling and pain. It is also antibacterial and anti-fungal used in conditions like athletes foot. Aloe Vera is also used after surgical operations as it decreases surgical recovery time. For example eighteen acne patients underwent facial surgery in which lesion scars were removed. After the operation, dressings were applied to their faces, with half of each person's face receiving the standard coated with surgical gel, and other half with Aloe Vera added to the dressing. The half of the face treated with Aloe Vera healed approximately 72hrs faster than the other side. Another advantage of using Aloe Vera is that when taken orally it eases intestinal problems. Aloe Vera juice has been found effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Aloe Vera has also been found to reduce blood sugar in diabetes. When taken, Aloe Vera reduces the blood sugar levels in diabetics as reported in Hormone Research Five patients with adults. non insulin-dependant diabetes were given half-teaspoon of Aloe Vera extract daily for up to 14 weeks. Blood sugar levels were reduced in all patients by an average of 45 per cent. Research has also shown that Aloe Vera reduces arthritic swelling. It can help prevent arthritis and reduce the inflammation in joints already affected by arthritis, according to the journal of the American Pediatrics Medical Association. An extract of mannose, one of the sugars in Aloe Vera has been found to inhibit HIV-1 progression. In 1991 study in molecular Biotherapy, HIV-1 cells were treated in vitro, outside the body with a mannose extract Aloe Vera slowed virus reproduction by as much as 30 percent. This suppressed the spread of the virus from infected cells.
