  1. You have been left at home during the elections day and you intend to carry out a few activities.
    1. Give the procedure of how you will launder you woolen jacket. (10m)
    2. Clean a stained kitchen plastic bowl. (5m)
    3. Improvise a long-handled sweeping broom. (5m)

SECTION A 40 MARKS

  1. State two points to remember when using deodorants. (2m)
    • Body should be clean.
    • Stop in case of allergies.
    • Follow manufacturers’ instructions.
    • Stop in case of skin irritation.
  2. Give two points to consider when choosing a laundry brush. (2m)
    • Bristles should be fairly and evenly fixed.
    • Handle should be of convenient length.
    • Handle in smooth and light in weight.
    • Long lasting materials.
  3. Give two reasons why hot water is not suitable for cleaning wooden surfaces. (2m)
    • Softens the surface.
    • Causes it to warp/swell.
    • Causes discolouration/darknens.
  4. State two precautions to take when cleaning aluminum. (2m)
    • Do not use alkaline soaps.
    • Avoid using harsh abrasives.
    • Avoid sudden temps. changes.
  5. Point out three causes of anaemia. (3m)
    • Lack of iron in the body.
    • Excessive bleeding.
    • Malnutrition/poor feeding
    • Manifestation of parasites.
    • Lack of vit. C in the diet.
  6. List down three reasons for using polythene bags for storing foods in a fridge. (2m)

    • Easy to build: no expertise needed.
    • Take a short time/fast to build.
  9. State two methods of disinfecting bath towels. (2m)
    • Boiling.
    • Hot sun drying.
    • Use of chemicals, eg. Dettol.
    • Steaming.

  10. Give three ways of identifying warp threads in a woven fabric in the absence of a selvedge. (3m)
    • Will not stretch when pulled.

  14. State two limitations of nylon clothes. (2m)
    • Not absorbent.
    • Produces static electricity.
    • Forms piles when rubbed.
    • White ones yellow with age.
  15. Differentiate between sponging and spotting as special treatments in laundry work. (2m)
    • Sponging is cleaning a garment on the surface using a sponge or a bad wrung out of a solvent while
    • Spotting is cleaning a section of a garment using a sponge wrung out of a solvent without cleaning the rest of the garment.
  16. Highlight two qualities of deep frying fat/oil (2m)
    • Should have a high smoking point.
    • Should not have a definite flavour.
  17. Mention two forms of malnutrition in the society (2m)
    • Overnourishment.
    • Under nourishment.
  18. Give the other name for vit. C (1m)
    • Ascorbic acid.

SECTION B – (20MKS) (COMPULSORY)

  1. You have been left at home during the elections day and you intend to carry out a few activities.
    1. Give the procedure of how you will launder you woolen jacket. (10m)
      • Collect all items required.
      • Take mments. & record; shake to remove dust, wash quickly in warm soapy water, kneading & squeezing mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly in warm water squeeze out excess water; Roll a clean towel.
      • Dry flatunder shade; press, warm iron.
      • Air fold & store in a wardrobe, hanger use naphthalene balls to prevent moths damages up.
    2. Clean a stained kitchen plastic bowl. (5m)
      • Collect items required.
      • Wash in hot soapy water using a soft cloth
      • Use mild bleach or soak in lemon water.
      • Rinse thoroughly in hot water.
      • Dry completely and rub/buff with a soft cloth to shine ; store properly.
      • Clear up -----
    3. Improvise a long-handled sweeping broom. (5m)
      • Collect what is required.
      • Use long grass or twigs.
      • Take a long stick; curve to smoothen
      • Tie with a string on the handle.
      • Turn the grass make a 2nd tie’
      • Trim the tips.

SECTION C – 40 MARKS.

Answer only 2 questions in this section.

      1. Cleaning a glass window from outside to inside.
        • To enhance through cleaning as dirt marks are clearly seem from inside.
      2. Scrubbing a wall from down moving up.
        • To avoid dirt from drying on the wall.

      3. Sweeping with long low strokes.
        • To avoid raising dust and leaving dirt patches.
      4. Pouring hot water down a kitchen sink drain.
        • To disinfect the sink.
        • To get rid of bad smells.
        • To melt fat/grease in the sink pipe.
      5. Collecting all the required equipment and materials before any task.
        • To save time and energy.
    2. Explain five importances of proper drainage in a family house.
      • Prevents diseases ----well explained----
      • Discourages breeding & for pests.
      • Provides psychological satisfaction to those living in it.
      • The house is free from stains or stubbon dirt.
      • Frees the house from bad odours.
    3. State five characteristics of a well made seam. (5m)
      • Neat on both sides to enhance appearance.
      • Firmly stitched from strong durable work.
      • Even in width.
      • Well pressed.
      • Accurately made.
      • As insconspicious as possible unless meant for decoration on the R.S
    4. List down five advantages of roasting food.
      • It is a quick method of cooking.
      • Roasted food is attractive.
      • It is tasty esp. meat.

      • Cost – price to include all other charges.
      • Value of the house – seek prof. advice
      • Location of the house
      • Construction – well built, durable & attractive
      • Family requirements to meet needs
      • Reliability of the seller – legal docs etc.
    2. List down five qualities of tomatoes when purchasing. (5m)
      • Red in colour when ripe.
      • Be firm and not overripe.
      • Not infected by insects.
      • Should be clean.
      • Smooth, not bruised or scratched.
    3. Give three uses of starch and two uses of washing soda in laundry. (5m)
      1. Starch
        • Gives a glossy appearance
        • To stiffen fabrics.
        • Makes articles dirt – resistant
        • Make articles resistant to creases.
      2. Washing soda
        • To soften hard water.
        • Emulsifies grease.
        • Removes stains on white cottons & linens.
  3.  
    1. Explain five factors to consider when working permanent stitches. (10m)
      • Use the correct size of needle and thread for the fabric.
      • The colour of thread shd. match of the fabric unless a decorative effect is desired.
      • Choose the correct stitch for the intended ppse.
      • Fasten on and off securely, neatly and firmly.
      • Shd. be firmly and neatly done and inconspicious unless a dec. effect is desired.
      • Use the correct tension according to wt. of fabric.
    2. Highlight five known causes of malnutrition in Kenya. (5m)
      • Poverty.
      • Parasites.
      • Natural calamities.
      • Ignorance .
      • Corruption.
      • Food taboos.
      • Lifestyle.
      • Body inability to utilize nutrients..
        NB each should be well stated.
    3. State five points to consider when choosing a wardrobe. (5m)
      • Should have sufficient space for the clothes to be stored.
      • Made of durable material to last long.
      • Have smooth surfaces.
      • Lockable to protect articles from dust or light.
      • Strong rod for hanging.
      • Easy to clean and maintain.
