You are the top candidate in your county in last year’s KCSE examination. You have been invited to address the invitees of this year’s Education Day in your school. Write the speech you will give, outlining four factors that contributed to your success.

Read the story below and answer the questions that follow.

A long time ago I was told a story about a tall, very muscular man. He used to walk only at night and he used to carry a collection of all kinds of metals: “sufuria, ruyungu, bikhule, nu rundi runda tsa rwa khaboolakhu.” With these he made a lot of noise Ngalia-ngalia-ngalia when walking. His direction was always towards the moon. His mission nobody knew. In this metal he carried all the diseases of the earth. The noise made by the collection warned people to be out of the way, for anybody who saw him was infected by the diseases he carried and thus became blind.

MARKING SCHEME

QN 1 FUNCTIONAL WRITING 20MKS
FORMAT: 4mks

Title: should contain name of deliverer of the speech, event during which the speech is to be delivered, the date and the venue. @1/2 mk , total=2mks

Salutation: protocol/hierarchy should be observed. 1mk

Conclusion: must have words that signal the end of the speech e.g Thank you, God bless you. 1mk

CONTENT: 8mks

4 well explained issues eg school discipline, parental support, close teacher-student interaction, group work etc. @ 2mks

LANGUAGE: 8mks

D 01-05
There is generally no communication. Parts of the question might actually be copied. All manner of grammatical errors are evident. There are some broken parts.

C 06-10
This category is characterized by a jerky thoughts and simplistic language. The candidate communicates understandably but more or less clearly. Tense errors, spelling and construction errors are quite common. Communication is still hampered and the candidate lacks confidence in the language. In the lower C (06-07), the reader at times has to guess what the candidate is saying. The upper C (0-10) may be clean but it simplistic and the candidate still communicates in an uncertain manner.

B 11-15
This category is marked by better fluency as the candidate demonstrates that he/she can use English as a normal way of expressing him/herself. There are still many errors but these should not be over-penalized. At this level, some candidates may become overambitious with a tendency to misuse words. There are some items of merit.

A 16-20
The candidate is very much at ease with the language. At this level, the candidate deliberately manipulates language to serve his/her purpose. There is outstanding use of language not only of single words but whole sentences or even paragraphs. There is clever use of vocabulary. Communication is not limited to the idea level but touches on emotional aspect. In the upper A category (18-20) the errors are felt to be slips and should not deny the candidate the full range of marks. The candidate communicates in an unusual style with a lot of pleasantness. There is a definite spark!

      1 mk for identification, 1mk for illustration
    2. ideophone Ngalia-ngalia-ngalia. It helps create a vivid mental picture of the noise made by the metal. 1mk for identifying the sound feature, 1 mk for effect
    3. Use of appropriate gestures .e.g raising my hands to show how tall the man was.
      Use of appropriate facial expressions e.g close my eyes to show how one became blind when he saw the man.
      Accept any other correct well illustrated feature. 1mk for the feature, 1mk for illustration
