THE TEST

A pattern of a child’s dress is provided. You are advised to study the sketches, instructions and the layout carefully before you begin the test.

MATERIALS PROVIDED

  1. Pattern pieces
    A - FRONT DRESS
    B - BACK DRESS
    C - SIDE FRILL
    D - BACK RILL
    E - FRONT FRILL
    F - POCKET
  2. Plain light weight cotton fabric 75cm by 90 cm.
  3. Sewing thread to match the fabric.
  4. 1 large envelope.

THE TEST

Using the materials provided, cut out and make up the RIGHT HALF of the dress to show the following.

  1. Cutting out. (14 marks)
  2. Making of the pin tucks on the front dress. (101/2 marks)
  3. Working the double pointed dart at the back dress. (91/2 marks)
  4. Preparation and attachment of the patch pocket. (12 marks)
  5. Making a plain seam at the shoulder. (51/2marks)
  6. Joining the front and back dress at the side using open seam. (5 marks)
  7. Joining the front frill to the back frill using a double stitched seam. (8 marks)
  8. Joining the back frill to the side frill using a French seam. (8 marks)
  9. Making of gathers on the side frill. (3 marks)
  10. Joining the dress to the joined frills using an overlaid seam. (9 marks)
  11. Presentation (51/2 marks)

NOTE: At the end of the test, firmly sew on to your work on a single fabric a label bearing your name and admission number. Remove needles and pins from work. Then fold your work carefully and place it in the envelope. DO NOT PUT SCRAPS OF MATERIALS IN THE ENVELOPE.

  a. The dress folded to W.S on the stitching line.
b. The folded dress placed on the R.S. of the frill at the stitching line.
c. Seam done with firm (1/2) and straight (1/2) stitches and close to the fold (1)
d. Seam turnings trimmed to 1 cm
e, Seam turnings neatened together.
f. Appropriate neatening stitches (If not give zero from f – i)
