    • One can use item while still paying for it in installments
    • One can pay part of the money and play remaining amount in bits or installment
    • One can receive repairs and services
    • One is able to buy an item that would not have been bought when using cash
    • The item becomes an immediate saving to the family (any well answered question 1x2=2mks)
  2. Function of roughage in the body
    • Use to push waste matter from the system to avoid constipation
    • Add bulk to the diet (1x2=2mks)
  3. Two factors to consider when locality living room in a house
    • Should be located away from the bedroom mainly because it is a social room and may be noisy
    • Should be located conveniently to convenient location without intruding into privacy or private rooms in the house (1x2=2mks)
  4. Effect of heat on protein
    • Protein coagulates and shrinks
    • Harden and become difficult to digest        (award 1mkx2=2mks)
  5. Point to consider when choosing a refuse container
    • Should have a well-fitting lid
    • Should be large enough to suit individual use
    • Should be made of strong, durable material e.g. plastic
    • Should not have perforation at bottom so as not to spill waste water liquid

    • Should be adequate in order to carry out laundry effectively.
    • Should be appropriate sizes to suit individual needs for intend purposes.

    • Should have a means of lifting

  7. Method of repairing clothes
    • Repairing belt carriers and loops

  8. Advantage of gas in a home
    • Clean to use, no fumes or soot that darken cooking vessels
    • It is fast compared to other fuels
    • Fuel is readily available if it runs out the cylinder can be refilled
    • Doesn’t require a lot of storage space

  9. Counterfeit means items that imitate the original good or service they may not meet the set standard e.g. KEBS stand to be allowed the market for use, however they are sold.                                                                      (1x2=2mks)
  10. Factors that lead to artificial feeding of an infant
    • A sick mother hence inability to breast feed e.g. breast abscess or HIV
    • Death of a mother
    • Baby refusal to breast feed

                                                                      SECTION B          (20MKS)
  19. Cleaning a hurricane lamp and leave it ready for use                            (10mks)
    1. Line surface with old newspaper (½) to protect it from damage (½) clean the glass by washing in warm (½) soapy (½) water with soft cloth / sponge (½) to remove fixed dirt. Rinse in warm (½) water to remove traces of soap and dirt (½). Drip dry (½) on clean protected area. Empty the reservoir (½) seal off any opening (½). Dust any loose dirt / soot using a dry piece of cloth (½) clean the frame and chimney using a cloth wrung out of warm (½) soapy (½) water. Rinse (½) using a cloth wrung out of warm clean (½) water to remove traces of soap and dirt (½). Wash the other metallic parts in warm soapy (½) water and rinse (½) to remove traces of soap and trim the wick evenly (½) and replace. Buff (½) the glass chimney and frame using a soft cloth. Re-assemble the lamp (½) replace kerosene (½) and leave lamp ready for use. (Award ½ for each correct ans. ½x16)

    2. Pour boiling hot water (½) through the stain. Soak (½) in cold (1/2) water to loosen dirt (½) wash in hand hot soapy (½) water using friction (½) to remove fixed dirt. Rinse in hot clean (12) water (½) to remove soap and dirt (½). Final rinse in cold (1/2) water with starch (1/2) to stiffen (1/2). Allow to dry in direct sunshine (½). Iron with a hot iron (1/2) while slightly damp. Air for complete drying (1/2). Fold and store (1/2)                      (Award ½ x 16 mark for each correct mark total possible marks=8mks)

    3. Four harmful processes harmful to woolen fibers
      • Soaking – soaking woolen causes wool to shrink and weaken
      • Rubbing / friction washing causes stretching of wool
      • Starching causes hardening and breaking of wool fibers.
      • Ironing wool causes stretching the produces shiny patches on the garment.
      • Drying by hanging causes stretching and loss of shape.
      • Dry wool in the sun causes hardening and breaking of wool.
      • Washing in hot water causes wool to shrink, harden and crease.
      • Rinsing using cold water wool felts and matt.
        (award ½ mark for mentioning harm caused and ½ mark for explanation (½ x 2) total 4

    1. Principle of good buying
      • Buy durable items to last for long
      • Compare / window shop to compare prices and quality in order to get value for your money.
      • Buy in good / genuine shops to avoid exploitation.
      • Buy large packs as they are more economical.
      • Buy most essential commodities i.e. follow priorities to avoid any inconveniences by poor budgeting practices.
      • Avoid impulse buying i.e. buying items out of the budgeted items which affects budget negatively where you may miss out buying essential items.
      • Carry shopping list to remember all items from most important to least important to this ensures nothing is forgotten.
      • Check for good wrapping, instructions and expiry dates that help to buy quality goods for for human consumption and guide in uses of commodities respectively (any 4 well explained points award 2mks x 4 = total 8mks)
    2. Definition of terms
      1. Glazing – brushing with beaten egg yolk over some foods before putting them for baking in ovens. This bring a good attractive brown colour over the baked product e.g. pastures or yeast mixtures like bread
      2. Simmering – cooking below boiling point (100C0) over a lengthy of time e.g. stewing tough meat in order to make it tender.
      3. Coating – covering food with another food e.g. scotch eggs with egg York and bread crumps to prevent breaking of food while cooking and adds flavor add nutritive value of food and give food good appearance. (definition 1mk explanation award 1mk 1x2=2mks)
    3. Points to consider when choosing fabrics for curtains in a house
      • Should be colour fast
      • Should be crease resistant
      • Should not rot from exposure to the sun
      • The fabric should be attractive and harmonize well with décor in the house
      • Should be easy to launder
      • Should be durable
      • Should drape well and resist abrasion
        (For well discussed answers award 2mks each 2x3=6mks)
  21.  
    1. Precautionary measures to take when caring for a sick person at home
      • Ensure patient is clean all the time
      • Use tissue paper which can be collected and burnt instead of handkerchiefs
      • Blood or other body fluids should be handled cautiously
      • All personal effects of the sick should be washed separately and disinfected according to type.
      • Feeding equipment should be cleaned separately and sterilized.
      • Persons minding the sick should wear protective clothing should wash hands with disinfectant before and after taking care of the sick                              (Award 2mks well discussed ans. 2x3=6)
    2. Reason for adequate ventilation in a room
      • To remove humidity
      • To remove air combustion making room comfortable
      • To get rid of moisture in a room which may result to dampness in a room.
      • In case of institution, good ventilation is a regulation to comply with building regulations.
      • Reduces chances of spreading airborne diseases.
      • Good ventilation removes bad odour
      • In a kitchen, good ventilation, remove smoke and fire heat, making room comfortable to work in  (Award 2mks each 2x3=6mks)
    3. Attributes of good lighting at home
      • To provide good vision to avoid accidents
      • To avoid contrast with background that cause glare and strain to eyes
      • Reduce fatigue
      • Enhances interior decoration blending well colours
      • To avoid dim light that may strain eye
      • To enable work to be done efficiently and effectively e.g. sewing  (Award 1mk to well answered point 1x4=4mks)

    1. Factors to consider when planning meals for the elderly
      • Avoid hard food some may have lost their teeth
      • Ensure food is well balanced provide more protein and protective foods
      • The food should be rich in calcium ad phosphorous to strengthen the bones
      • Should be easy to digest
      • Should be rightly flavoured or less non-greasy
      • Should be attractively served
      • Consider their likes and dislikes
    2. Factors to consider when choosing openings
      • Choice of opening is influenced by the style of garment.
      • Type of fabric e.g. shear, thick, heavy etc
      • Type of garment determine the choice of opening – inner wear, blouse, skirt, trouser, Childress
      • Position of the opening – front, back, side skirt opening
      • Effect desired-opening in garment also determine whether a functional or decorative aspect

    3. Characteristics of cellulosic fibers
      • They are resistant to high temperature
      • They do not generate static electricity
      • They crease readily
      • Have high affinity to dye
      • Shrink readily
      • They are very strong fibers and can resist tear and wear                      (Award 1 for correct ans.1x4=4mks)
    4. Types of artificial lighting
      • Electric lamps
      • Kerosene lamps
      • Candles
      • Torches / spotlight
      • Gas lamps                 (Award each 1mk 1x4=4mks)
