MARKING SCHEME
- Explain the relationship of Geography and the following disciplines.
- Civil Engineering- It is the branch of science that deals with building and maintenance of structure like roads, bridges, Geographical knowledge of land forms, rocks and soils is vital before the project are designed.
- Mathematics – Maths knowledge helps geographers to simplify and interprets numerical data, calculation of area, measurement of distance etc
- History – History is the study of the past events and current. Geographers require historical knowledge to know how the earth was formed.(6mks)
- State the three weakness of the passing star theory. (6mks)
- Chances of another star approaching the sun are minimal.
- High temperature material drawn from the sun or from the star would disperse rather than condense.
- It does not explain where the sun and the passing star came from.
- Explain four proofs that the earth is spherical. (8mks)
- Circumnavigation: It is possible to fly or sail round the earth following one direction say East and coming back to the same point.
- When the ship is approaching a port an observer standing on a cliff or any raised ground will not see the whole ship until it is too close.
- The earth rotates from West to East. The sun appears earlier in the East than West.
- During the eclipse of the moon, the shadow of the earth appears spherical.
- The earth’s horizon appear circular.
- Since all planets, the moon and the sun are round when viewed through a telescope, it follows that the earth being one of the planets must also be round.
- The table shows rainfall and temperature of town Y. Using the figures given finds
- The total annual rainfall. (2mks)
- 4393mm
- The wettest month. (1mk)
- July
- The mean monthly rainfall. (2mks)
- 366mm
- The annual range of temperature. (1mk
- 30 − 23 = 7°c
- Mean annual temperature. (2mks)
- 26.5°c
- The total annual rainfall. (2mks)
- Using the data above draw line graph to present the temperature. (7mks)
- When it is 2.00pm in London, what is the time at town X that lies on longitude 160°E. (4mks)
London is O° longitude and it is 2.00pm
If 1° → 4 min
160° → ?
160 x 4 = 640min
640/60 = 10hrs 40min
10hrs 40min + 14.00
X = 00.400am -
- Give the distinction between oceans and seas. (2mks)
- An Ocean is a large body of salty water on the surface of the earth between continents while a Sea is a mass of salty water surrounded by land.
- Explain three significances of oceans and seas. (6mks)
- Modifies the climatic conditions of the adjacent lands.
- They are sources of fish.
- They have been used as water ways
- The tidal rise and fall of ocean waters have been harnessed to generate electricity.
- They are used for military strategy.
- Mention three types of tides. (3mks)
- Perigean tides
- Apogean tides
- Neap tides
- Spring tides.
- Give the distinction between oceans and seas. (2mks)
